#greenjello #threelittlepigs #tool
I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Founded in the early 80’s by frontman Bill Manspeaker it seemed unlikely that Green Jello would ever achieve any sort of success. Even though they were dubbed the “world’s worst band”, by the early 90’s Green Jello would get airplay on MTV, sign a production deal with the network, have a gold record, and be in the guinness book of world records for most band members with around 770. Today let’s explore the history of green jelly and whatever happened to the band.
A combination of punk and metal, The Washington Post perfectly summed up Green Jello’s music saying They play nondescript hard rock music unencumbered by weighty lyrics, dress up in costumes that look like mutant Saturday morning cartoon characters created with the budget of a third-grade pageant, and saturate the whole package with a sense of humor straight out of a junior high school bathroom.
Green Jello was the brain child of one man, Buffalo native Bill Manspeaker who grew up under difficult circumstances. Six weeks after he was born, his father died in an auto accident.
His mother Louise would tell the buffalo news "It was tough; it was just me and Bill," "I always worried about him. You raise a child alone, and you wonder if he will stay out of trouble. Billy was always a good kid with a great imagination.
But by Manspeaker’s own admission he was a bully in school, He would reveal in the same article “I was always the bully in school. I took karate lessons so I could learn how to beat up little kids better. I learned how to do this karate move called the Dance of Death. I earned my next belt for knowing this, then I thought, 'Wait a minute. I'm being rewarded because I can snap somebody's back in two and ruin their life? This is stupid.' After that I put all my energy into the band."
Manspeaker would name his band after what he thought was the worst menu at his high school cafeteria and it also served as a characterization of the band’s musical abilities. Manspeaker would reveal the moment he founded the band as you can see here on KZbin Channel On With the Show.
Manspeaker was and still is pretty self deprecating about the band’s musical abilities. Green Jello’s motto was "we suck” & it was pretty common for him to get audiences who attended their shows to yell “green jello sucks”. A big musical influence in Manspeaker’s life was his uncle who was Elvis impersonator in his hometown of Buffalo using the stage name Big Wheelie. Manspeaker wold tell the washington post "I thought he was Elvis for my whole childhood, and one day I saw Elvis Presley on TV and I said, 'Look, Mom, some guy's imitating Uncle Chuck!' It was like, 'Uh, no, Billy.' I was devastated. It was worse than finding out my mom was Santa Claus."
Unlike a lot of bands who cut their teeth first playing covers, Manspeaker was honest about his band’s musical talent admitting they couldn’t do other people’s songs justice telling the Post “we had instruments, but we didn't know how to play them" --, "we decided to make up our own songs so no one would know if we screwed 'em up,". "Then we thought we'd dress up in costumes so people would just look at them and not pay attention to the songs, but that still didn't work. Finally we thought, let's just say we're the world's worst band, then everyone will just come and laugh at us. That worked” he’d say. That’s not to say all the musicians who played in the group were bad Tool members Danny Carney and Maynard James Keenan spent time in the group and Keenan can even be heard on the track three little pigs.
Green Jello’s shows would became synonymous with just having a good time as the band donned costumes, spraying the audience with liquids while they in turn would throw jello at the band. Of course their onstage antics got the group from quite a few clubs, but one of the band’s first big backers would be Bud Burke who owned the buffalo establishment the Continental Club. He booked Green Jello when other clubs said no and supported them financially during their lean years.
Manspeaker would tell the Washington Post why the group stood out telling the Post “"It's like when you're driving down the freeway and the traffic's all

I know some of the Maynard and green jello history but was wondering is that pretty much how members of tool met each other and started to play together? Or did they know each other before hanging around the green jello studio? I can see that maybe if that's where they all met then yea it coulda been possible they never woulda formed a band because they just might not have hung out or anything. I don't see why that's such a crazy thing to think. He's not saying green jello actually shaped tool's sound n shit lol.
@jordanstuteville9154

@@marksantory4405 Maynard worked at a pet shop and was throwing ideas around with group of friends who happened to know Bill Manspeaker. He started jamming with the local music scene and Danny Carry lived above him and they started talking about music together. Danny was in everything and they met Adam Jones through local art and studio designs. Adam was introduced to Paul through their filmmaking compadres and brought the music that Maynard gave him to check out. Adam threw ideas around and biggest Green Jello connection to Tool forming is Bill Manspeaker got them signed to his record production company Zoo. If Bill didn't make Zoo and start making music with Tool we would have never seen Opiate. Regardless of what could have been, it wouldn't have been the Tool we know today. Maybe a side project that would have never seen the light of day. Crazy to think about life like that. We're just here for the ride! Music is God

The 2019 show mentioned was in London, Ontario at the Old East 765 Bar & Grill. I was there. It was a very small show on a very snowy evening. I think the promoter just took off without paying them so they hunted him down the next day. I'm guessing they were saying it was in Toronto because it's a recognizable Canadian city. It's about a 2 hour drive from London.

I remember when this stuff came out. Ahhhhh......the early 90's..... wiping a tear from my eye.....I was in high school and my friend Dale came over to me during study hall, he had a VHS tape in his hand and said "you gotta watch this". That was entertainment, the only people to get butthurt were corporations and rich people.

I met the former Green Jello while we worked at Tower Records, Hollywood, late 80s. The band was a collaborative venture as everyone wrote and contributed to the melee.Manspeaker parked cars for a living and the unanimous comment was "Oh that Green Jello crap is over, we're all serious musicians now". Despite Bill telling me they had brought the stage gear from Buffalo (so their parents wouldn't throw itIn the trash). Co-worker Sylvia Massey and myself were the two person campaign who nagged the band to get-some-go again, finally securing a reunion gig at The Central (which became The Viper Room... now probably a Jamba Juice). This sparked a renewed interest the band started performing regularly, eventually being signed by Zoo (whatever that was). That same week, Bill Manspeaker fired each of his lifelong pals, telling them GJ was always his band and claiming to be the sole writer. That ignorant greed inspired a class action lawsuit against Zoo and Manspeaker. ... there was a massive payout - most band members I knew told me they spent it all on drugs. Some real winners there! That's the real story - ask anyone involved, 30 years on. I hear Green Bill has been touring with Green Jelly ever since. I suspect he's really just parking cars.

I worked at a recording studio. where I worked wit ha Green Jello band member, so was privvy to all the drama and success they had at that time. One Xmas, we rented out the Viper Room for our company party, and Green Jello played before my band and though an abridged version of their show, it was terrible and BRILLIANT..Id like to think that there were many bands in LA back then that were ahead of their times. Green Jello had an influence much greater than their industry success...Green Jello Suxx

I saw Green Jello open for Testament in 1993 or 94, it was a fun show and I met several members of the band. In 2014 I got to see them again at a small club, I had friended Bill on Facebook years earlier and finally met him and his son. It was cool to hang out with them and I even got to play the Rock N Roll Pumpkin at that show. Bill's son Damien got some really good pictures at the show.

Eagles, Metallica, The Dead (w\jerry), pantera 8 times, Pink Floyd, etc.... Green Jello 25 something years later is still the best time I ever had at a concert no question. I still tell people tales of that night. I knew them for the 3 little pigs song and nothing more. I had my mind blown with an amazing time. A cow locked eyes with me from the stage and then shot lasers from his eyes into mine while HOT women ran all over the stage and then he started freaking out screaming we worship him ,while he ******* the women in their face. That was just the start of the concert.

I remember the first time I heard about this band. It was the summer after 8th grade in 1993 and I was playing on a baseball team with the other guys in my class. We were sitting in the dugout before a game and my friend asked me if I heard that 3 little pigs song. I thought he was being stupid but he was like no it's a real song by this band called Green Jelly. We didn't have youtube or any kind of streaming so it was a few weeks after hearing ABOUT the band that I actually had a chance to hear them and see the video late one night. Man we liked some weird stuff back then.

Good synopsis. Missed out on a interesting data point about them handling much of the production for the KISS reunion back in 1996 (including photoshoots, videos, etc). And Paul and Gene appearing in Electric Harley House of Love. Bill was a huge KISS fan as were several of the other members. My fave song by them is House Me Teenage Rave (originally called Whip Me Teenage Babe) Good times.
