The second Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, debuted in the silver age in 1960. His first solo outing saw him fighting a villain called...The Puppetmaster. No not the Fantastic Four's Puppetmaster from Marvel Comics, but another less well known DC comics version. Can the Emerald Gladiator take on a giant puppet...the answer is yes. Can he do it without tripping over himself? Find out here on Casually Comics!

The mostly hidden sub text for Hal is that Hal Jordan is a loser at doing anything besides flying planes and being Green Lantern. That’s why he just hangs out as Green Lantern all the time on earth and will just leave earth to roam space for years at a time. The Guardians know this and just lead him around by the nose to do their dirty work. I never understood why DC try to make Hal cool. He works better as a loser with a heart of gold. IMHO
@PosthumanHeresy
@PosthumanHeresy 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Honestly that's why Nathan Fillion was always the best casting for Hal Jordan. He's a lovable man with a heart of gold, but also just... not someone fit for daily living with normal people. And Hal doesn't want that either. He goes on and on and on about how much he loves to be alone in the sky with himself. Independence is a pure expression of willpower. Hal and Mal would be besties.

I also like how the tale of Biffy seems to imply that all of the common criminals in DC are the same ones, and the cops just let them out every now and then and then capture them again the same way the heroes do with supervillains.

Green Lantern's earth based villains are so... odd, because he's been so established as a space fairing and League member fighter, that when you remember enemies like, The Tattoo Man, Harpoon, and Puppetmaster, they seem like they can fight anyone... and they kinda do.
@PosthumanHeresy
@PosthumanHeresy 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the less iconically an inversion of the hero the villain is, the more they're treated like a mercenary with a gimmick. Actual mercenaries with a gimmick get tied to heroes more heavily even, like Deathstroke being so bitter toward Nightwing while having strong elements of Evil Batdad that he's become identified with the Batfam.

That's surprising. Julius Schwartz gave him that profession because it's more exciting than newspaper reporter or police lab scientist. I mean, someone whose job is to take up newly-designed jets to stress-test them? That takes guts... and a lot of trust in your engineers and mechanics. Which is why he made one of them his sidekick, I guess.

I kind of see this villain as a metaphor for what Hal is going through, the puppet is a metaphor for commitment. The way the puppet master pulls the strings, Carol tries to pull the strings of Green Lanterns heart. But eventually Hal controls the puppet master as he takes him to jail, which is juxtaposed to Hal wanting to be the one to get a commitment out of Carol instead of Carol getting commitment out of him… honestly it’s a little blurry but I feel like strings and commitment have some kind of a juxtaposition relevancy

I think puppet Master is the rare villain who wore yellow not because he studied Green lantern but because he liked the color... Check out his next appearance in a very early issue of teen Titans, where he's not only rocking yellow but some seriously committed shoulder pads.... Now if you really want to check out a rogue who committed to the yellow schtick, you need to check out Goldface, who's entire gimmick was he was gold and he liked gold.... That dude was a major thorn in both Hal's and Guy's butt... I would also strongly suggest you check out the lunacy that was The Predator, a GL villain who should appeal to all of your Lois Lane like fantasies....

The one story about marriage-obsessed Carol Farris from the same period that sticks out in my mind is "The Leap Year Menace." It is Leap Day, and Carol has arranged with Green Lantern to spend the day together. He knows that she is going to take the opportunity to propose to him. He doesn't want to be rude to her. But he always manages to find opportunities to fly off and take care of some emergency just when she is getting ready to propose. The story ends with Green Lantern successfully making it through the day without becoming engaged to Carol.

As far as Green Lantern villains go, Black Hand fascinates me because his two gimmicks (idioms and death) are so different from each other. I wonder if anyone has tried combining them somehow. Like, since idioms are set phrases, that makes them dead in a way? Also in the Silver Age he was called "The Cliche Criminal" and that makes me laugh.

Haven't watched all 13 but I kinda liked Puppet Master, Pinhead was my favourite but I remember Full House's Demonic Toys more. I do like seeing early starts for superheroes when the face zany villains or the locales they're in aren't well established (Aquaman being a doctor to sea creatures in full doctor attire with the head mirror comes to mind) and always down for clumsy Hal. As for more quirky(ish) GL villains I'm always partial to seeing Karshon and Doctor Polaris more.

In most recent stories (even in the Young Justice series) he´s there just so that either someone can steal Warworld and/or to tell the same story all over of the gladiator. 2. Shark: Would love for him to have a comeback. And, to make him different from King Shark, make him a Hammerhead shark.

The lynchpin of Hal's rogues gallery has to be none other than Carol Ferris herself, when she's taken over by the persona of Star Sapphire. And honestly, his whole character development is kind of special; he gets his ring because he's "a man without fear", he repeatedly faces an enemy (Sinestro) who started out as a hero and went rogue, his sidekick may be the only Inuit character in all of comicdom, and then there's that penchant for slipping on a bar of soap and knocking himself unconscious.

Other than that I really like the pterodactyls that randomly happened and he never found out it was because pterodactyl aliens wanted to give them another chance to take over the world. Full Moon just after a full moon. I have a feeling that there is a lot of crossover with comics and Puppetmaster movies. "I've been thinking..." not something you want to hear from clumsy Hal. Puppetmaster had to pay off his student loans so he scienced for evil. A missed opportunity to have the Puppetmaster using a rogue Green Lantern ring, will power against will power, thought the will power aspect came along much later.

look, something with “MENACE OF THE GIANT PUPPET” and a giant puppet on the cover would absolutely get me spending my pocket money on a green lantern comic, that’s all I’m saying

I don’t know if Carol is as thirsty as Lois was back then. Lois went after any handsome guy. Carol just wanted Hal.

There is also a science fiction film from the 90's called the Puppet Masters, based on the Robert Heinlein novel of the same name.

Just checked out the Green Lantern rogues gallery for the Golden Age. He had a foe called the FOP (Percival DeChaunce )?!? They really were just throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck.

No. No Carol do not listen to the Emerald Sasha. Do not jump in the lake. Thats a Lois Lane move and you can't have it.

Marvel came up with its own puppet master a few years later. Interesting that DC didn't sue.
