GREEN Oil Paint Might Be A Luxury On Your Palette - Why Buy Green?
On this video I share a few thoughts regarding store-bought green oil paint and why I want you to think about when to buy and when not to buy manufactured greens.
I share my modified version of the Zorn palette (my limited palette) of:
- Williamsburg Flake White
- Royal Talons (Rembrandt) Ivory Black
- Winsor & Newton Cadmium Yellow Pale
- Winsor & Newton Cadmium Red
- Winsor & Newton Raw Umber
Most of my oil painting session include the base palette on my mixing table or hand held wooden palette. Though, in some cases I will add additional colors from what I call my extended palette.

If you are a landscape painter how to save yellows, blues and time? Buy a beautiful green, maybe a Phtalo or Viridian with which you can do wonderful mixes, even purples; or chromium oxide green, very versatile, or start mixing with a light green which can be very near the color needed. Of course for portraitists greens are a minor issue.

I too felt this way about tube greens, that it was better to just mix them from primaries. Until I discovered chromium oxide green. It's now a staple color on my palette, and i find it a super useful modifier of other colors and the perfect starting point for virtually any green I want ti mix. Add a little ultramarine, and you get a color very close to viridin. Add yellow or red to warm it up. It's a color that plays well with others, being neither overpowering like pthalo, or super weak like earth greens. It's also a single pigment color, which I aways prefer.

I must admit, that is my favorite green. I use it with watercolor and gouache and it’s made it’s way onto my oil palette a few times. Thanks for the comment

I think if you’re a beginner, just buy green, honestly, don’t be cheap. You want to get the best possible easiest start without any unnecessary stumbling blocks that will make you want to quit painting. I saw those greens, it happens to everyone. You mix yellow and blue thinking you’ll get a vibrant green and you get a greyish green then you get into the “throw good money after bad” phase when you keep adding yellow, wasting more and more paint instead of starting over. I know experienced painters who went to art school who cannot mix paint (even though they think they can) - it is not low hanging fruit. It is not easy. You refine it over time. You obviously can’t run away from mixing completely but you want a place to start that’s going to set you up for success. I recommend a light green that you can darken or use as is

Why buy green? Because it's not possible to mix a transparent green, like pthalo, or a semi-transparent one, like veridian; because they are very useful colors to modify other mixtures, and lastly, because good secondary colors are useful to neutralize their opposites.

Michael! Really great content man. I actually JUST picked up a couple of tubes of green for my oil painting and gouache palettes. I have always mixed my greens, but decided to give it a try to see what the fuss is about. For a lot of plein air painters it seems they prefer tube greens on the palette as time savers. I'm exploring that idea. Right now it's a totally way of thinking so I don't know that it actually is saving me any time but I'm gonna give it several paintings before i decide if i like it or not. I'm definitely more comfortable with a limited palette and feel i can get more harmony that way... One thing i struggled with was trying to decide which greens to buy as it can be a nightmare figuring out what greens are cool or warm, or transparent or not etc. Also with gouache, since that type of paint dries slightly darker I actually invested in a third green that is high chroma and high value to help when painting diffused light through tree leaves. It's just a super hard green to mix without desaturating. But like you said so far I've always had to adjust a tube green, and every green I've bough is technically mixed with a couple colors at least anyway by the manufacturer... Interesting you mentioned zorn as I've been wanting to play with that palette more lately. I think as autumn comes i might try some landscapes with it for fun.

Thanks! Funny thing, I’m about to cave and try adding a green to my palette but not 100% sure as to which one yet. Old Holland’s Green Umber is one I want to test out after watching some of Cesar Santos’ videos on mixing flesh colors.

@@MichaelWarthStudios that’s awesome! At the end of the day I’m ok with experimenting cause that’s how you get experience. I figured I couldn’t really swear off tube greens unless I had tried them several times. You should at least use it for a painting or two and see what happens. I actually did that with some other colors I knew I wouldn’t use much and just got the student line to play around. I know it’s not as good but it allowed me to get a taste of how I would use each one without breaking the bank. I wish for oils you could buy samples or something.

The only greens i buy are emerald green, hookers green, and a couple grey greens. Simply because i use them a lot, and it saves on me not having to restock my blues and yellows so much

I totally get this. There are times id love to have a real punchy green but I rarely need it with the work I typically do.

A high chroma blue doesn’t really exist in this palette but the Ivory Black has enough blue in it to pull off the need for blue. In many cases. Maybe I need to dig into another video?

I might add, Mark, for landscapes and most applications where I want blue (even for more green options), I add Ultramarine Blue and occasionally Prussian Blue.

'scuse my Bluesgnrance, but who is the music by? Got that Peter Green vibe, but he inspired Santana, but its not a santana number. Peter Green late recording of Black Magic Woman- or a (very good!) cover?
