How to blend up a green smoothie (vegan) with VitaMix and Blendtec blenders.
UPDATE 2013: I have kept up with nutrition over the years and since the creation of the video have cut fruit to half (now: one apple, one orange, half banana, half peeled lemon) to reduce the sugar. I stopped using processed oil and instead I put 6 tablespoons of flax seeds in a full blender to max out on the omega 3 oils. Finally, I add hibiscus flower powder and indian gooseberry powder for antioxidants and nutrients based on them scoring very high on several research studies. Bottom line - I'm still drinking these every day for almost 10 years now... :-) Good luck and enjoy - good health is one whirl away!

I have gravitated towards the Vitamix because of the manual control option. The blendtec has buttons, so you do not have the same control with texture and consistency in my opinion. However, both will blend pretty much anything you put in them, so this is a minor detail to most people.

Bought my Vitamix in 1994, and have used it almost daily for NutButters, Whole Wheat Flower from Wheatberries, making Bread and various Doughs from scratch, and plenty of Soups and Hummus, along with my Smoothies or Milkshakes for the kids...and Coffee Specialty drinks......20 years and still going Strong!! Vitamix also outperformed the Blendtec Nationwide in Starbucks....Too many customer complaints when Starbucks tried to save some money, switched from the Vitamix to Blendtec, however after complaints nationwide flooding Corporate Starbucks, they switched back to Vitamix....complaints were that drinks consistency was poor, often lumpy, and Blendtec was also too Loud....Vitamix lets others do it's talking

Steve Hoffman Thanks Steve!! Yes, I agree with you, and the jars he's referring to, were for the Vitamix Bar Bosses.....for Bar Drinks....the Whole Food Machines like I have, have always used a jar that creates the whirlpool pushing all ingredients into the middle down to blades......Vitamix has been very good to me over the past 20 years as well as their customer Service...

@TheLoserKingdom : It's true that the blendtec blender is bigger and even more powerful with the 3" blade. It does not however have a manual dial to set the speed. It has "variable" buttons the will blend with various speeds. I use the Blendtech for sticky stuff that is hard to get out of the Vitamix with a spoon due to the narrow blender container and blades at the bottom. I use the Vitamix for smoothies. I usually just alternate the speed on the vitamix instead of using the tamper.

I'm sure that someone else had made this comment but if you follow the instructions for Blendtecs, they always tell you to add ingredients in this order - liquids, solids, ice and then greens on the very top. Adding greens first can put extra stress on the blades and it also impacts the quality, taste and "foaminess" of the smoothy as for some reason doing this incorporates more air into the mixture.

Yes. Using the whole flax seed is the best because the shell protects the healthy omega 3 fatty acids from being oxidized by air. Flax oil and ground flax seed lose their healthful benefits with time (in months). Both of these blenders will pulverize the flax seeds, but cheaper blenders won't always do this.

Here's a clue for anyone who is looking to get a blender: Look for ANY blender that says it will "chop ice". That's all you need. Mine cost about $25 from walmart, purchased over 10 years ago, and still going strong.

The model that I used was the one prior to the 5200 series... That is not important as it is no longer available. However, a game changer occur in 2013 - the new Vitamix series came out and is absolutely awesome. 50% quieter and wide base like the Blendtec. I think Vitamix copied Blendtec, but ethical or not, the new Vitamix 7500 series is the best blender on the market IMHO. (The price is higher though = $529) - but worth it in the long run (these blenders last a decade..)

Thanks for the feedback. Why am I doing all this? It all began when I was diagnosed with high cholesterol 10 years ago. I then switched to a mainly raw foods vegan diet and my cholesterol came down from 220 to 150. I also work in the hospital and have seen lot of needless suffering due to poor lifestyle choices. Heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are common illnesses that can be largely prevented by healthy lifestyle choices. That's what drives me... and it's fun to feel healthy!

lol yeah, and that really sells me on the Blendtec. I would never have to worry about my daughter cutting herself on the blades. Plus, my wife is allergic to wheat, so we must be able to grind our own grains regularly. With the VM, the wet blade will get dull (and hinder the VM's functionality) if used to grind hard grains regularly, which is why they have the dry blade container, for an additional $135.

@FredB127 : Bad gas huh? Couple of things come to mind: 1. Food combining - don't drink the green smoothie on top of a solid meal. Try to drink it first by itself and 45 minutes later have solid food. If you mix it with a solid meal, the sugars can likely ferment and produce gas while the solid meal and green drink sit in your stomach for an extended period of time. 2. Reduce the amount of fruit to reduce the sugar. 3. Try only one green at a time (all kale for instance), they can result in gas.

@RawVeronica You are correct. I no longer add olive oil (or any processed oil) to my smoothies. I instead add flax seeds to improve the omega 3:6 ratio. I did not fully appreciate the importance this information until I watched a video by Dr. Greger at nutritionfactsDOTorg. I used an unripe banana because I have not heard of any contraindications for doing this. Please let me know if you know of any :)

I love my blendtec. Before I bought my blendtec, I went through a lot of wannabe blenders, like the Healthmaster. I can throw anything at the blendtec, and it handles it like a champ. I throw ice in there, and it crushes it like if it was a twig. I never used the VM before the one my parents bought, but I can tell you if I was stuck with a VM, I'd probably love it too...lol I would never go back to a regular blender ever again.

Just additional info. Blendtec has a 3yr warranty on the motor only. 3hp engine Vitamix has a 7-10 yr, on the motor and containers, 2.5 hp engine. If your blender doesn't have this kind of speed it can't break the structure of the cells down, for you to digest properly. If you eat corn on the cobb, same idea applies. I've added organic cold pressed organic coconut oil to mine, or hemp oil. Not always just when I think I need it. Supposed to be good for the skin. Also try a bit of Ginger
@DoctorTouk
@DoctorTouk 14 жыл бұрын
@bintasyllah : That's a difficult question... I think the vitamix can make better nut milk due to higher distal blade velocity (escpecially with small seed i.e. sesame) but the blendtec can possibly make better frozen treats because of its wide base (in a Vitamix the cold foods occasionally freezes into a "shell" (like an igloo) above the blades and the blades can't reach it. Then you need a plunger to push it in or add more fluid.) Both will make soups well. It's a tough call - I'd go w/ VM..

Depends on where you look. Costco has the vitamix in-store for $375. I got it for my parents because they wanted a blender like mine (I have a blendtec). Though I haven't had any issues with my blendtec for the past 4 years I've owned it, I recommended the vitamix to my parents because it has a reputation for being reliable. It was $375 for a Vitamix 5200, so, it wasn't just a simple High/low model. The blendtec at costco was $400, but to be fair, it came with two jars instead of 1.

I happen to know as I studied horticulture at Univ. of MD. Yes, some are on the surface. But quite a bit is absorbed into the soil and brought up thru the roots into the plants. Every time it rains or the plants are watered, the residues on the soil and ON the plants goes below surface and taken up by the roots. So, yes, I have a clue, more so than most.

I agree with all that you wrote... I just saw that Blendtec has come out with a 3L pitcher vs. the 2+ liter vitamix. At this point.. I think I would actually go for the blendtec, because with 3L capacity you can make drinks for the whole day/family with one single blending. The vitamix has a long warranty though because they have around for so long... but I haven't heard any complaints about the blendtec's breaking down though either. Good luck :)

Plus I liked the Blendtec's container better. It is square and flush, so it makes it really easy to get everything out. The VM's container has fluted sides and is narrow towards the blade, which makes it more difficult. Then that "star blade" it has makes it even more difficult to get out.

They had it in the store. I just called my store, and they told me they had it in stock. Apparently, they sell so much that they just carry them in the store all the time, and $375 was the price, but it only comes with the wet container, not the dry one. You could probably call your local costco and ask about the vitamix, They might have it in stock, but it might just depends on the area too.

With blended drinks one should not get bloating/gas since everything is so finely ground up - unless maybe you make is super overly sweet and the sugar ferments too quick. I add the enzymes so the smoothie liquefies when I drink it for lunch. Since it's a raw food, all of the food's own enzymes are there, but I like to help them out a bit. Any enzyme powder that is plant-derived broad-spectrum (works in wide pH range) should work well - I personally use E3Live Supreme enzymes since u asked. :)

@terridalt : This can definitely be a meal replacement. However, I would also add a granola bar or something because "chewing" food communicates with the brain and gives more of a feeling of satiety than just a quick gulp of the smoothie. I personally do not feel fully satisfied if I just drink this smoothie without actually also eating something small. It makes little over a half a gallon of green drink. Total calories: ~600-700. I usually have about 32oz. during lunch (~300kcal) + granola bar.

I've had my blendtec for about 4 years. I have no regrets... except that I haven't been using it as much as I should be.....lol. BTW, even though you can to wet and dry in the same jar, dry ingredients like the flour you made can make lots of tiny scratches on the inside of the jar, which will make the jar look cloudy. I'm planning on getting the wildside jar for my machine, and keep my standard jar for dry grinding/milling, since it's already cloudy anyway...lol. I also need the extra room.

16oz of green juice is probably around 300 calories - that's probably why you are still hungry. I also make and dehydrate granola bars (see my fasting videos to see how) which I always eat along with drinking my green drink. You need to keep your jaws still working and eat something solid to feel more full. So, that's what I do: drink and a couple of granola bars. I also make sprout drinks with the blender (sunflower sprouts, banana, blueberries) that will definitely fill you up (32oz).

The only thing i would change, i wouldn't put all that water in the blender. You put it all the way to to top. You should just use water where it covers maybe 1/3 of the jar. If you use to much water in the blender, it can dilute the taste of the fruits.

Either way, have you any thoughts on loose nutritional bounds per day or week? I admit it is very easy to put a great deal of food in at one time and finish all of it within 2 or 3 hours. @funacc10 I think that most dietary acid come from animal derived proteins, sodas, coffee etc... vegetable smoothies are alkalizing in general and I have not seen any research that would support monitoring these subjects in a healthy person, except for recurrent kidney stone formers who might not tolerate high levels of oxalic acid from certain greens (i.e. spinach).

Alien2799: You are correct - my Blendtech is the wimpy 3" blader... lol! From what I hear, the 4" blade makes a world of a difference and is probably the dominating blender on the market at this moment. I don't know if you'd need water... but I think it's necessary because otherwise your smoothie is really a solid "lump" unless you blended some really watery produce. Give it a try! @MARS2477 : Sure - carrots blend well. Make sure you blend for a good while to make it really smooth. Oryou can filter out the pulp through a strainer after blending if you want pure juice (however the pulp is high fiber and healthy).

The fact is, washoff is primarily a result of the improper application of pesticides as a result of premature rain.. As much as is spent on pesticides, growers do NOT want washoff & go to great lengths to avoid it as it lessens the ROI. But thanks for focusing on the secondary rather than the primary sources. Maybe now you will tell us of the dangers of being hit by lightning harvesting the vegies, or choking, or... if you want organic, fine, that is your option.

@PE425 As far as the green smoothie example here, I have had several variants like this, they are very nutritious, balanced, and are simply awesome! For those that are new to green smoothies, or are just having a hard time adjusting to green smoothies and think they are not sweet enough (even with the fruit), simply add a tiny amount of Stevia, then gradually reduce the amount you use each time until you find the green smoothies sweet enough without the Stevia.

I was hoping to see at the end "BLENDTEC WINS!" so I could feel good about buying mine. But in the end, it's personal preference. I like pushing a button that says "smoothie" or "ice cream" and other people like having the control knob.

@krpataky The blenders will completely pulverize the flax seeds - you will get all of the good omega 3 oils. Remember that flax oil or ground flax is oxidized (damaged) after several months; whole flax seeds protect the oils over a year and are thus excellent when blended in these smoothies.)

@JenJewl1 : The green drinks last at least 72 hours in the fridge if you keep them cold right after making them. I usually make them each evening before sleep/in the morning before work depending on how busy I am. Sprout drinks on the other hand (i.e. sunflower sprouts, banana, berries, soymilk, and water) goes bad in a matter of several hours.. but green drinks stay good for days.

@bluesdog88: Olive oil is a monounsaturated oil for the most part (~90%) which is a relatively healthy and important oil to health. The remaining 10% of olive oil is made up of polyunsaturated oils, with an omega 3:6 ratio of 3:13, which is quite high for the pro-inflammatory omega 6 component. However, to improve the omega 3:6 ratio in the smoothie (optimal is 1:1), I add a couple of tablespoons of flax seeds (about 66% polyunsaturated oil w/ omega 3:6 ratio of 1:3 (one of highest in nature!).

Try coconut water in place of water. I get mine at Costco as its much cheaper buying in bulk.

I love my blendtec, but yeah, the Vitamix is a great machine as well. Either way, these two blenders are the best blenders on the market. What I do love about my blendtec is that when I clean it, I dont have to worry about sharp blades. Somehow, blendtec managed to create a blender that blends with dull blades! lol

@isaachaze1 : Unfortunately all high polyunsaturated oil blends (i.e. Flax oil, Udo's oil blend etc.) become ineffective within a couple of weeks from production. It is not recommended to try to get omega 3 oils from pre-made oils that come in a bottle (even if in a dark bottle in the fridge). This has been demonstrated in multiple recent studies. Instead, use flax seeds or self-ground flax seeds (ground a new patch each week and keep it in an air tight container in fridge).

Great looking smoothie! Do you have any concern about the recent studies linking flax consumption (both oil and milled seed) with prostate cancer?

I was wanting to compare the two blenders when I ran across your video. Thank you. It did look like the Vitamix blended the ingredients a bit smoother, not sure that's worth the cost difference, though. For me, anyway.

@outspeaker : Orange peel in the blender - actually a great idea in small amounts. I recall seeing studies some years back that they reduce your cholesterol levels.

@area62310 - The Blentec has quite a few buttons that have lower speed options... but honestly, I don't think it matters because both blenders are so powerful (2-3 horsepower) that they can shred up pretty much anything you put in there. Also, I suspect that the blenders have built in security systems that prevent them from burning up - i.e. they won't blend faster than the motor will allow. I personally like the manual speed dial on the vitamix - but I think it makes no practical difference.

Wow. Organic veggies and fruits. How much money do you estimate went into each smoothie? I'd like to try to eat better but I'm curious as to the cost.
