I wanted to wait till I had my own bottle before replying because I wanted to be able to test my ideas. First, the 'frosting' comment threw me. I had no idea what you were talking about until later in the video. Kinda not related to review, but thought I'd throw it out there. I do get what you meant now, although I usually just think of that as 'adding texture' not 'frosting' which is something entirely different. The paint actually doesn't really rub off any more than any other matte paint. I tested that using q-tips instead of my finger so I could be sure. Instead, what you see happening is the oil and pressure of your finger essentially 'polishing' the paint. You normally don't notice this effect on regular matte paint because the difference between an untouched and touched finish is minimal. With the ultrablack paints tho, it's very noticeable. It's also why despite disagreeing with your assessment here, you're not wrong on how it's going to impact the paint use. (and if you want to see an ultrablack that rubs off like coal dust, you should check out Black 4.0...yeesh that stuff is a mess) Side note: I notice practically all reviewers of new products compare the new to things they know how to use, especially if the review starts turning negative. This tends to impact the quality of the review. Of course the new thing you're not liking all that much isn't going to work as well as the thing you know how to use. Back to the paint. The thing I've taken away from other reviews, and especially from my own tests is that this is not a black color paint. It's a black effect paint. You especially can't use it to color minis as they'll lose detail and volume. Where it does work tho is when you want that to happen. For example, if you paint the inside of a gun barrel you drilled out with Maxx Darth, then touch up the top of the inside with normal black or dark metallic or whatever, you'll get a barrel that looks much deeper than the 1-2mm you actually drilled. Or if you have a face under a hood that you want to disappear except for eyes, or pretty much anything where the goal to make a bit deeper or gone. And, also a bit that won't likely be getting touched since the finish is delicate and can't be varnished without wrecking it. Speaking of varnishing, while it definitely changes the darkness level, it also locks in and makes a consistent finish. It won't be ultrablack anymore, but it'll still be very black. That said, the GSW intensity ink black seemed a bit darker than matt varnished Maxx Darth, and neither are as useful in my experience as the Army Painter Matt Black which is very flexible in terms of its use even if it's not as dark. Generally speaking, I don't like painting anything truly black because of the loss of volume. So depsite my ork army being purple and black (sneaky and tough), it's a lot more dark grey than actual black, and Maxx Darth definitely doesn't work for boots, armor, and whatnot on them. Still, despite those limitations, it's not really any different than any of the other piles of effect paints I have and use all the time. It just takes figuring out how it works, and then making sure whatever you're trying to do fits.

I definitely agree with you, I did rush to put out my review and now that I've had more time to experiment with it I agree its a great effect paint. The reason I was so ruff using my fingers is I wanted to see how the effect held up on gaming figures that would be handled more as apposed to a display figure that wont be handled vary much; I should have made that more clear. As for the "Frosting" I kept saying it reminded me of how some cans of matt varnish can "frost" when you apply them so I just ran with that comment assuming people would understand. You've definitely given me a lot to think about in terms of how I review products going forward, thank you for that.

That's pretty much what I expected to hear, considering how the other ultra light absorbing blacks work. I imagine the only difference here is maybe they have gone for a finer particle size, so large particles won't wipe out a model.

It makes sense when you learn how matt pants actually stay matt but yes I was hoping for similar results with a more robust/resistant finally result.

I ordered before watching, I feel this is more of an effect paint rather than a black model paint ie I group it with my blood/rust/grime paints for smaller more deliberate areas than general use tbh just opinion though!

Honestly that's what I was aiming for with this video but I wanted people to draw there own conclusions. I'm glad you and so many others feel the same way.

I got the Master of Darkness tier for the Kickstarter but haven’t used the black yet. I could be wrong but did you prime your models? The look like bare plastic 😅

I tried both with and without primer and after i was done with the video I tried with two other brands of primer and had the exact same results.

So which Chinese company did they get this from and trademark it as their own?

Honestly no idea, I wish I knew I would love to buy some of the "off brand" from that company and try it to see how close it is to other products.

They did release the specs of the paint on their kickstarter page somewhere and iirc it’s their own formulation? 🤷‍♂️

It cracks me up that we've reached a point where cheap Chinese knock-offs are assumed to be the originals. I honestly have no idea who came up for the idea of things like the brush rinser, and have zero interest in trying to find the original release to see if its actually GSW or someone else, but once upon a time, the assumption would be completely the opposite of yours :P
