Hello from Dallas! Just found your channel. I am on your fourth video. I really like that you don't have annoying background music. Your directions are clear and your voice is soothing. My tomatoes quit producing flowers. Is it because we are getting 97, 98, 99 degrees of weather??
@OldAlabamaGardener7 жыл бұрын
Hello Sue and welcome to my channel. I appreciate you for watching my videos. And, yes, I don't like annoying music either, I think it detracts from my message to you, so I don't use it. On tomatoes, I have always heard that when the temperatures get above 95 degrees, tomato blossoms don't set or stay on the vine (But I don't have any experiments to prove or disprove that). There is a product called: Blossom Set, which supposedly makes the blooms stay on the plant, but I have not tried it. Again, thank you for your encouraging words. I like to know where my KZbin friends are located, so where do you live? Thanks for commenting. OAG

I just found your video which should help me in the next few weeks. THANKS!!! I am from East Coast Canada, and we already had a frost last week, but I managed to cover them and they came out unspoiled. Today, I'm debating if I should all bring them indoor or not. So I'm wondering, is the taste that different between letting them ripe indoor vs. on the vine? Thanks Mr. OAG!
@OldAlabamaGardener6 жыл бұрын
Sophie: First welcome to my videos. As for taste of tomatoes ripened off the vine, here is what I have found to be the case. If the tomato is not matured to the stage where the blossom end is turning white, the taste may be affected. So, what this means is: The larger and more mature (beginning to turn white or showing a star shape on the bottom blossom end) the green tomato is, the better the taste will be when it ripens. I hope this helps, if I did not answer your question sufficiently, please ask me again. I would wait until I knew for sure a frost was coming before I picked all the green tomatoes. OAG

I have ripened even small green tomatoes, it takes a few weeks but eventually they will ripen. This is something I do when we are going to have a frost in the fall and I am sure it will kill my tomato plants, so, I pick all the green ones and bring them in the house. OAG

OldAlabamaGardener thank you, I had the notion that they needed to be near a bright window.
@dwaynesmotherman44817 жыл бұрын
OAG, Do you ever pick some varieties of tomatoes when there not quiet ripe yet. Ive been doing that because if i leave them on the vine to fully ripen, they will develope deep cracks on top. So ill pick them when there red on bottom and orange to yellow on top. Or if its gonna rain real hard, ill pick the ones that are almost ready. If not, they will crack and i guess i have some kind of mental OCD, becuase i just hate when they crack in top. Anyway i live on the west side of Indianapolis, and i was just curious if you have pick tomatoes early to keep them from cracking. Not all varieties do that of coarse. But most the bigger fruit tomatoe plant do. Thank for your videos. Im gonna subscribe and watch many more. Happy growing my friend. Dwayne

@@OldAlabamaGardener You are not answering the question sir. What are you supposed to do with the green ones? Put them in a drawer? A plastic or paper bag? In the sun, out of the sun? Just out on a table?
@OldAlabamaGardener5 жыл бұрын
@@jtjjbannie When I am asked to give an answer, and I am not given much information (as in this original question: "I brought couple inside and they still green. It is almost 2 weeks now. What I'm missing?", it leaves much unknown for me to guess at. As I said, it depends on how green or how small the tomato they are trying to ripen. If it is a small tomato and I tell them to put it in a paper bag, it will probably rot before it turns color. The same if it is put in a drawer. Without me seeing the tomato I can't give specific instruction on exactly what to do. So, I feel I did answer the question, as best I could with so much unknown about their tomatoes. However, it will take a good candidate tomato about two months, not two weeks, to ripen enough to eat. OAG

I see Fried Green Tomatoes and Green Tomato Pie :)))) If yours taste good why do you think people are always saying tomatoes in the store have no flavor because they are picked green? I always wondered about that cause when I ripen them in the house I sure can't tell the difference. We are getting pretty cold over here, how bout you? Lights are on the house and the tree is going up now, I just love decorating for Christ's birthday :))))
@OldAlabamaGardener8 жыл бұрын
Hi Melody, *The people who say "they have no flavor because they are picked green" don't know what they are talking about*. The reason the tomatoes in the store don't have a good taste or flavor is because the store tomatoes are a hybrid breed tomato, specifically to hold up in shipping and long life on the store shelves. But not bred for flavor. The breeder's goal was to produce a tomato that ripened all at the same time, didn't get mushy in transit and would sit on the shelve for a long time with out getting rotten. And they achieved that with the tomatoes most people buy at the stores. Thanks for bringing that thought up. OAG
@melodycapehartmedina22648 жыл бұрын
Well now that makes sense because I grow Heirloom's and mine are always really good. Good for you Melody, you have a wood cook stove. There is nothing like a wood cook stove for creating a warm atmosphere in the house. When I was young boy we would sit by the cook stove, in the dark (we didn't have electricity), it kept us warm and with all the family close by it felt secure. That was in many ways, the good ole days. I hope you and family are well, take care!. Charles

How does writing on the tomato, ripen it?
@OldAlabamaGardener5 жыл бұрын
This was an experiment to see had many days it took to ripen the tomato and writing the date on the tomato was the easiest way to keep track of when I started it. OAG
@MichaelJosephJr9343 жыл бұрын
I used a red sharpie and now I can't read the date.

What variety of tomato are those?
@OldAlabamaGardener8 жыл бұрын
Hello L. B.! Those are Better Boy, a hybrid tomato. Even though they were picked green they still have a good taste. How have you been doing lately? OAG
@Aelanna8 жыл бұрын
Ah, ok. I've heard good things about that variety, but I tend to avoid hybrids, because I like to collect and save my own seed. Not doing too bad here yet, getting cold but so far no snow. Picking the last of my indoor peppers this week.

@@OldAlabamaGardener My Better Boys came in looking kind of like pumpkins, with ribs. Not smooth and round. I think I bought the plants at Home Depot. Have you ever seen that? Do you know what would cause it?
@OldAlabamaGardener4 жыл бұрын
@@watermelonlalala Differences in heat stress or watering either too much or not enough might cause such. It doesn't hurt the tomato taste or nutrition. OAG
@watermelonlalala4 жыл бұрын
@@OldAlabamaGardener It happened all year, from the first tomatoes that came in to the ones out there now. I don't mind them looking like little pumpkins, they are good to eat. Thanks.

Sometimes pictures are better than words. And that is what I gave you, how to ripen tomatoes by being patient and letting the green ones ripen, over time, in the house, because it winter outside. OAG
@TheRipeTomatoFarms5 жыл бұрын
Sunny window sill works great....usually a couple of weeks. If you want them to ripen faster, a box with other ripening fruit (bananas, apples, avocados, or even other tomatoes) and then over. They will ripen FAST.
