GREEN VALLEY 2022 - Moog Minitaur Analog Bass Monosynth Performance

Analog Mission

Күн бұрын

Sequenced entirely on one monophonic Arturia Keystep Pro track, played through the Moog Minitaur, into a gratuitous yet essential series of delays and reverbs courtesy of Valhalla DSP - an experiment with what can be done LIVE in realtime with one monosynth (and some help from a plugin or two)
The Minitaur was my first analog synth, and I love finding new ways to explore what it's capable of doing by itself, and what it's capable of doing in concert with other hardware and software!

Can this device generate its own sounds(?), or are you generating noise from another device and feeding it into the Moog/Minitaur to then bassify it(?) - Please let me know, as this might be on a purchase shortlist. - Thanks.

this is wild. i've had the minituaur for years and i just use it in the studio for plunky bass hits. thanks for sharing and would love if you could elaborate on your FX chain as it's not easy to have something where delay and reverb are driving the sound like that come out so clean!

@analogmission 27 күн бұрын
I'm not using it in the video - the sounds you are hearing come exclusively from the Minitaur, processed primarily with Valhalla. It's blinking because it's connected and receiving the same midi signal that the Minitaur is receiving. I would recommend the Sirin as it will give you a complete range of octaves - the Minitaur is exclusively a bass synth, and does not play higher notes beyond a certain octave.

Thanks for posting this, sounds great! Honestly sometimes I wish I never sold my minitaur to go towards a subsequent37, I miss the simplicity of it a lot sometimes. It's easy to get a sweet spot on the sub37 for sure, but it's even easier on the minitaur. Watching this makes me wanna sell the sub and grab a minitaur again!

THAT IS GREAT! Can you share the settings of the reverb/delay and plugins you used? I have the Supermassive and the UADs but I can't seem to get the same spacey and warm sound. Thank you!
@analogmission
@analogmission 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know of a way to post screenshots on here, or all the details of every setting on every instance of every plugin, but I can tell you that I used one instance of Supermassive for the delay and another one for the “reverb” - Supermassive is doing a LOT of things at once and back when I filmed this performance I had found it easier to rely on multiple instances of it to perform different roles than trying to get it all right with one preset. Now I could probably get away with just doing one instance per track. As for the UAD stuff, I don’t rely on them much or push them hard. Just run the preamp plugin and gently push the knob a little. The 610 and 1073 are my favorites with the Minitaur.

@analogmission

I might have not answered the first part of your question - S&H was added via firmware update to the Minitaur by Moog a few years ago. It's accessible by hitting the SHIFT (glide) button and turning the LFO rate knob to the right

How would you compare the bass of Minitaur to that of Siring? Identical?
@analogmission
@analogmission 2 жыл бұрын
Playing the Sirin feels and sounds like playing a Minitaur, with the bonus of having access to the upper octaves in the Sirin. The Minitaur does not play high notes, and this limits it to the bass octaves. I love the sound of the Minitaur but I would rather have a second Sirin.
@metanoja9804
@metanoja9804 2 жыл бұрын
@@analogmission I hear you. Am asking because I'd been eyeing Sirin for a long time, so long in fact that I started thinking about getting the Taurus instead. Luckily two days ago I got one for $600, not cheap I know, but they are quickly becoming classic so their value is bound to increase.

In a direct comparison video I found the oscillators of the older Minitaur to be a little more beefy and alive. I found it's a general development for several newer Moog oscillator designs to become a little more static and boring. It's subtle, but it has some noticable effect on me. So, the Sub37 is gone and I'm eyeing the Minitaur.
@jc3drums916
@jc3drums916 Жыл бұрын
@@marcusfreeweb It's probably the same video I saw. :) Yeah, I thought the Minitaur's square wave was ever so slightly beefier than the Sirin's. However, IIRC the Sirin's square wave looked closer to the theoretical ideal on the spectrum analyzer. Their sawtooth waves were virtually identical. Both were better than the Sub37, which sounded a little thin and sterile in comparison (but still very good compared to most other synths).

What was the sequence?
@analogmission
@analogmission 2 жыл бұрын
Aside from posting a video of bleeps and bloops, I don’t know how to describe it. It begins very simple, with just a couple of bass notes from the Minitaur repeating into a delay provided by Supermassive. This gives the track a rhythm in the bass line. Then, in the spaces in the sequence BETWEEN the bass notes, I wrote out the melody part. In the busiest sections of the song, most of the notes between the bassline notes are occupied with melody notes. The Minitaur is only capable of playing one midi note at a time, so writing bass and melody lines into one track (a series of patterns programmed into the keystep pro) must be done as a alternating series of beeps and bloops and then dumped into the delay for rhythmic development. I hope this makes sense!
