I used pvc to make hoops over my raised beds so I can have row covers or netting over them for the whole season of I need to. In my case, it keeps the deer from nibbling things. The only thing I haven’t figured out how to keep covered are the tomatoes and other tall vining plants.

Hi, Ants produce formic acid, which helps them change the texture of the soil, maintain their environment and has other benefits for them. It may be contributing to the rust you are seeing on those particular bolts.

I bought two raised beds and am in the process of setting them up. I am in NH so we start planting later. I want to get them set up by this weekend and start filling them, and maybe plant Memorial Day weekend. I am so excited about these. As I get older having raised beds is a must-have. I learned about these from your channel. When I mentioned your channel to my neighbor she also said she watches you too.

The wood inside the bins holds moisture. Al on Lumnah Acres moved his beds from setting them up the year before and was able to find a stick in the bottom and could squeeze water out of it. Seen others and their logs they put in shrank dramatically. So just know you will have to add more dirt each year. That isn't a bad thing either. Already planted my bins and the most problem was with rolly polly bugs eating the lima beans. Never known them to be a pest. Your bins look so good.

We had neighborhood cats once that LOVED using my flower beds as their personal bathroom. My late husband suggested putting nails about every inch or so, with the point sticking up about 1/4 inch. They didn't hurt the beds or the flowers, and the cats hated the feel of them on their paws. Saved my sanity!!

I put plastic forks in the ground with the tines facing up to keep the squirrels from digging, would works for cats too i would think.

One thing you can do to keep the cats out of your beds is to spread cayenne pepper on the ground. They will only use it one more time if that. All of my beds are Huglekulture and they shrink every year a few inches. This last year (year 5) they shrank about 6 inches. I'm thinking they are starting to break down.

We love our Birdies (and they're local for us in Oz :-) ). The ants nest thing is a good observation, not something we've had (yet) - ants release formic acid as a defence mechanism (that smell when you squish one...), and formic acid and zinc don't get along!

I have had good luck using lemon rinds/peels around the areas where I DON'T want the cats doing their bidness. Orange peels and other intense smelling citrus works too. Others have talked about Pinesol or Lestoil but I don't know. Spraying the outside would work but would have to be repeated after each rain. BTW, once they have learned its not a nice place they will stay away. However strangers won't have that aversion. This stuff won't hurt the plants and will work on most outdoor areas. You will need to replace them regularly...

Hey Sam and Angela! Great video. Glad to hear the beds are holding up well! We did make improvements to our Birdies bed in the fall. All our Beds are now have stainless steel nuts and bolts to further minimize the chance of rust. Plus, you're right, we do have a new bracing kit made of galvanized steel! - Kevin

I used the Kellogg stuff topsoil in one of my planners last year and the other planner I use miracle grow. the flowers were twice as nice in a miracle grow planner as they were in the Kelloggs fact I had trouble keeping the plants in the Kellogg planner alive. . I won’t use it again. I hope you have better luck than I did with the soil. I’ll be watching to see I enjoy your videos thank you.

it will rust the zink coating is slowly desolving and after that it will start on the metal , shouldnt matter too mush if you stay on top of it , you can either paint it (tectile chassis black ) or replace them as for the soil settling , i used to grow some plant that smokes real nice and schrinkage was normal when using peat the stuff isnt fully done decomposing and its fluffed up to start with so watering it makes it settle sumtimes up to two thirth of the colume as long as you keep filling the plantbed up with new material it should be less and less ....... it might allso absorn moisture less and less so shoveling it out and putting it in a cementmixer with some perlite and slow desolving manure (chickenmanure rabit poop horse manure ) should have it back to full strength in no time as for the cats getting in , having chickenwire just under the surface or mounted to a frame set over the flowerbeds should disuade them from digging , makes gardening harder though

Ants secrete formic acid. That's probably why the nuts rusted in the ant colony.

Spices; must have salt and pepper Lea & Perrins The Original Worcestershire Sauce Bottle or a cheap imitation. When looking at spices to buy unless you use a lot of a spices buy the smallest amount you can weather in bulk or small containers. Since a lot of my spices were old I just bought a bunch of new spices at Family Dollar because they were the cheapest here; most were $0.99cents each. I like to use a salt & pepper grinders and garlic salt or garlic powder and onion powder or onion salt are must haves. Use this easy formula as a fresh-to-dried herb converter: 1 teaspoon of dried herbs for every 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs. In other words, use three times as much fresh herbs when the recipe calls for dried and 1/3 of the amount of dried herbs when the recipe calls for fresh. I tried to buy spices I could use to make things like Italian herb & spices. ITALIAN SEASONING 1 TBLS OREGANO, DRIED OR FRESH 1 TBLS. THYME, DRIED OR FRESH 1 TABLESOONS SAGE, DRIED OR FRESH 1 TBLS. PARSLEY, DRIED OR FRESH 1 TBLS. Mince together. Once prepared, herbs may be used fresh or dried
