2 things that may help. Once you've got your initial logs, sticks, dirt in and raked flat, water it in! This will help drive your soil down into the logs and past your branches. It will also help with starting to soak the logs because it will take a while for them to fully soak in because they are dry. Once they are initially watered in you can reevaluate your dirt level and add more as needed and do another water in to help drive it in further. And buying in bulk is the only way to go. People are always surprised by how much material it takes to fill anything! And if you go with loose bulk you can usually save a lot of money! That goes for mulch too. If you have a local nursery give them a call and see if they deliver. It's always going to be cheaper than your box stores. Another place to look is your local landfill/dump. Most municipalities have a "compost" that would be years previous leaf and tree collections. The only caveat to that is they dont deliver so you'll need a truck and/or trailer to pick it up. I wonder where you will find a truck and trailer?

I was going to mention the watering thing too. I did that in my beds and did find I needed to soak the logs and sticks or the bed dried out too fast.
@terryhenderson424 Жыл бұрын
Buying bulk is the way to go DEPENDING upon your delivery charges. If you're out a ways these can add up on the first load.
@synergy2222 Жыл бұрын
Be careful, the municipality compost likely has poisons in it from people who spray for pests, to kill weeds, etc. I wouldn't buy from there. The logs and sticks will soak it up as compost leaches in it and then you're growing food in it because you're using that as it's broken down and turned. That defeats the purpose of organic food.

We used to have access to a stable (they don't do too much for weeds out of a stable) and then also a 20 to 25 year old flattened hill of horse barn cleanings from shavings. We did a lot of growing of different types and places with that stuff for both ourselves and others. - At one place, we basically created dirt along side a private road where next door lived two, mostly white bull dogs. Thier owner was less than pleased cause every time we brought stable fresh barn cleanings, those dogs would go home green from rolling and playing in the fresh stuff.

So True. Last year my sister gave me a horse, that I cannot ride because I have bad arthritis, and I was a bit angry that she dumped this horse on me. 👋👋👋Hi Sam, Angela and your boys I think if you had watered the leaf litter it would have let it settle before you put the bought soil on top. Each watering will help. I myself, Sam, wouldn't have used the branches alongside of the logs. It's all wood and could have helped with other beds. I bet you didn't think that 8 beds would have taken so much filling and taken so long to do. They look like you are going to have a good lot of veg and herbs growing in them!

Hi, Would you believe I've never once in my life ever gardened or tried to grow anything? Yep, certified city gal here, even though I grew up in a small town, go figure!!! Mom n Dad did a little gardening once I was outta high school and working but I wasn't about to get my hands dirty. I had long nails and worked in a dress store, didn't want dirty fingernails was my excuse. Now days I just blame it on being too old, just a few months younger than King Charles, lol. Watching you both, and your wonderful sons, doing all the gardening is fun for me!!! I've had indoor plants that somehow lasted quite a few years then decided they'd had enough and died on me. So I wanna thank you for doing all the 'dirty work' and allowing me to watch and enjoy every minute of it!!! Good job all around!!! Keep up the good work!!! Loads of hugs to ya all!!! 😊

Yes, when you first show does the bins. I wondered if they weren't too close together to use the tractor. I hope you don't have them too close together now to be able to run a lawn more between them if you need to. Hopefully you'll wind up with foot pads between them, but will keep the weeds down, but it's always wise to leave lawn more room in case you need to run the lawn more to keep the weeds down. I like your idea of a mesh wire at the bottom to keep critters from burrowing into the bottom. Thanks for sharing!

Yes the first year in any place you place a garden it will be the biggest cost and the most work. And the most stress, trying to figure out the layout and what to plant. If it's not enough next year or this fall you can add more beds. But glad to see you are getting there, one step at a time. Great idea to fill the 4 then place the others. Just remember you may need tractor work again so set up accordingly.

A couple of years ago (ummm, 2020 when everyone else was doing a lot of utubing) I looked at a bunch of things Hugl...culture related including a documentary related to how to best fill your beds with wood materials. Having some space between your logs/ fill materials, especially the bottom layer was important. And you did so. It allows the dirt and compost materials to filter down and inbetween to contribute to the decomposition process. Also the water adding to the bottom ecosystem plus absorb into then be released by the bottom wood. Plants with longer/ deeper root systems were able to find thier way over, under, and around through the layers as they chose to if there was enough room for them to traverse.

The best way to get the fill to settle is get it wet. That turns the soil into a fluid which will fill any air pockets. And do not pull out the roots from the soil. They will rot down faster than the logs and add nutrients.

Your garden beds look great! Nice crops will beautiful coming out of there. Maybe instead of so many logs on the bottom, you could put half the amount of lofs and spaced farther apart then add some sticks and "forest" dirt on top of that, then the good "soil! This way you won't have to cut down half of the woods for logs! You can also use cardboard and grass clippings and manure from local farms! Any tree or utility company tree trimmings can also be used, sometimes they also have wood chips( to use near the bottom)! God Bless!( how is your foot Sam since stopping the supplements?)
