I'd like to ad that in certain situations you can have air in the system formed by cavitation at the impeller. This is caused bij restrictions on the vacuumend (intake) of the filter. In my case it was an inline heater that restricted flow (JBL 1902 so 16 mm hose with a 13 mm heater). Takeaway for me was that mixing hose sizes to save money ended up costing me more in the longrun becouse the impeller had visible damage from cavitation. Hope it helps someone out there. Oh and keep up the good work guys!

@@timmyfane9680 Yes, and for that particular reason most quality filters have flow restrictors on intake and outflow. User must set both on the same position. I got this tip from Oase support when I was consulting regarding FiltoSmart 60 flow. This is another great thing about more established brands, support. Thanks to OASE UK wonderful employee Charlotte.

The Green Aqua filter media configuration isn't the 'conventional' way but after trying it for a few months the results speak for themselves! My water is crystal clear and I don't have to worry about so many layers of different sponges or taking all the media out just to replace the fine filter mesh. Great thinking!

This was a lot to unpack, but incredibly useful. Thank you. One of the biggest things I struggled with while setting up a fancy oase filter: lily pipe sizes. There are a lot of terms, specifications, and info out there on them. Its just not easy to digest. Being American converting things wasn't awful, it was actually understanding the info. I watched a solid hour of videos before placing an order on a substandard set that worked. Lily pipes might not be an awful video to make. Maybe? Thats all on you. I love your channel. I love videos like this. Thanks for all the effort you put in. Honest.

Bought my oase biomaster 600 thermo at Green Aqua 2 months ago. It is doing a Great job on my 180 liters Dutch style aquarium. Easy pre filter and the Inside is still as clean as Day 1. It is only making more noise than expected.
@GreenAquaShop3 жыл бұрын
Usually, filters get a little noisier above 1000lph. If this is a humming noise you still can use sound isolating panels in your cabinet. If this is an air noise then with to check tubing etc to make sure no air is leaking

I have few points for this video. First of all, thank you for such extensive cover of this topic. In my aquariums I found surface skimmer useless. My filter outlets are making enought surface agitation to properly push surface scum under water. Another solution for surface scum is seachem pristine. Also, changing order of filter media in external filters to filter sponge - filter mesh - bio media - purigen, leads to better NH4 removal, according to my observations. Bio media will never be overloaded with detritus this way.
@GreenAquaShop3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for these observations, Adam. :
@alis492813 жыл бұрын
Correct. Biomedia will also remove NO3 very efficient in this order, especially at lower water speed. You can also leave out fine filter mesh to reduce NO3 removal.

What I’ve learned by dabbling in the reef keeping side of the hobby is that EVERY surface in the aquarium can host beneficial bacteria. Porous rocks can fill the same role as filter media, because that’s what filter media is made out of. You don’t need a ton of filter media in a canister filter to efficiently process ammonia, just enough surface area in general to host the bacteria, and enough flow to bring the ammonia to them.
@GreenAquaShop3 жыл бұрын
Yes, rocks, soil and other stuff will contribute. Very true.
@alis492813 жыл бұрын
Correct. I have a densely populated, planted aquarium with only coarse filter foam and Purigen against brown colour. The sand filters too. Nitrate levels are stable after I fertilize it with every water change. With high density filter media with fine filter mesh I had the constant issue of twisted plant leaves and constantly low Nitrate and iron levels. Doing this I don't need a skimmer, less fertilizer... of course, one can pump in a ton of money to fix filter errors. But that's not the elegant solution. Filter sponge has been sufficient for longer than 30 years and it will be for the next 30 years.

It's nice of you to speak about the noise and to give advice about it, that's a big parameter when choosing a filter, brands to advertise enough on it I think. Thank you for that video, really, I've been waiting for real tips on this and now I've got them! Would you have any tips for really small aquarium? Like for 10l or 20l tops (like shrimps only or betta only)? It's a big commitment (money wise) to buy an external filter for those types of aquariums and it seems over-the-top ("flow wise"), internal filters are taking space which... well, it's small already so it's not ideal, and hang-on filter (honest opinion, I find them ugly) are too noisy for a bedroom for me... So would you know a small external filter that would do the trick? I'm always amazed by your literal bucket of green tea! xD
@GreenAquaShop3 жыл бұрын
LOL Fanny, I love that cup. :) Anyway, I would go with an Experience filter, the smallest one, still a bit big for 10 liter, but for a 20 liter it is fine, you can hide it in the cabinet too.

Love the channel guys, I have subscribed! Quick question that I can't find anywhere through, I am in the process of setting up a planted ADA 120p tank (120cm x 50cm x 50cm - 273L) like the ones in your shop (medium amount of plants, not heavy, with just around 15-20 tetra's + clean up crew). I understand you use the Eheim 1200 XL / 2080 for this size however I'd prefer to use the Oase Biomaster filters due to the pre filter functionality which would be easier to maintain than the Eheim. What would you recommend if wanting to use an Oase solution: 1x Oase 850 (would this be enough) or 2x Oase 600? Many thanks in advance!
@luiswicho53013 жыл бұрын
I do have some of the filters presented. EHEIM Filters can be very silent. I also have an EDEN 501, a cheap filter but works great, and a Aquaclear 20. The classic model of Eheim is difficult to prime, even terrible. I added a double tap to get the maintenance and the suction exercises much easier. I do it using the head of the filter and looking to avoid water gets out. It works pretty good.( I discovered it after a long time of priming session hahaha). Otherwise my Eheim Experience 150 works good too. Thanks for this. Cheers guys! P.D I like your shirt Balazs. ;)

Great video! One problem I did not anticipate, that might potentially help others who are still planning: in my 60P tank, my Eheim canister rated at 440L/hr is too powerful for my nano fish (B. brigittae: chili rasboras). They frequently get caught in the lily pipe’s outflow “spin” and it takes 1-2 seconds for them to be released from that vortex. They want to swim and the current makes them uncomfortable. Before this one, I had an Eheim, rated at 1,000L/hr; that was really bad for them! I noticed that after switching from 1,000L/hr to 440L/hr flow rate, I had to increase my CO2 bubble rate. The flow is important for proper CO2 distribution in the tank. Ultimately, I will set up a different, smaller, tank for the nano fish and have just a sponge filter and a lot of low-light plants and surface area for them. I think nano fish just are largely not compatible with canister filters...of course it depends a little bit on tank size too. But the current bothers them and causes them to lose their color.
@GreenAquaShop3 жыл бұрын
I would use a normal lily pipe instead of the spin-type... And you can restrict the flow with a tap, no problem.
@sovrappensiero13 жыл бұрын
@@GreenAquaShop oh yes, I use a normal lily pipe (VIV brand, the shape is the same as ADA but ADA is much more difficult to get here, especially during COVID). Even the normal lily pipe creates a kind of swirling, spinning water flow inside the mouth of the lily pipe as the water flows out. As the water is flowing to the bottom, it kind of curls up...that's hard to explain, maybe you can try using food coloring to visual it. But it's how lily pipes are designed. The nano fish, if they swim in front of the lily pipe, they can get sucked into the mouth of it for 1-2 seconds. It was much worse with the 1,000L/hr filter...with 440L/hr it is a little better. But it is still a problem. It is not a problem for my gouramis, that are 5-7 cm long. But for the Boraras brigittae which are just 1-2 cm, it is a problem. They are just too small for this kind of filter.
@GreenAquaShop3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, restrict the flow a bit then.

Another awesome video from you guys! Just to add, that thanks to your video, I changed my Eheim Pro+ 600 to an Oase BioMaster Thermo 600 and I could not be more please. Flow is better, and the maintenance is wayyy easier. Just have two small downsides for me, first is that it makes more noise, its not super loud, but you can "see" that is there, and the Eheim was super quiet. The other thing, is that I use a skimmer built in the Inlet, and with the Oase, air is sucked in, so I had to remove it... That leads me to my question, if I use the Eheim skimmer, where is the best place to position it in the aquarium?
@pedromarinho65893 жыл бұрын
@xperia Depends on the noise you can handle, but they are really quiet filters. ultrmax i don't know, and jbl avoid it at all cost. I have issues now with two CO2 pressure regulator from them, the exact same issue, so quality wise i don't think it's so good... Their customer service is also terrible from my experience.

The question is surly by changing their media and filling the space with another type will considerably restrict the quoted flow, I have noticed a reduction in my Oase 600 in my 200lt tank. What do you guys do to ensure you still have at least X5 flow? Also do you replace all the Blue media in the 600 with Biological media?

Hi! What do you think about "aquael" filters. Can you recommend this brand?

Not used them, but based on what we've seen they are in the same league like JBL, Tetra

Great fiter overview!👍🏻:) I consider to buy the JBL 402 greenline, because of the low power consumption. Is this external filter also quiet compared to the high class external filters?

Not as quiet, but many use it happily.

I respect the Green Aqua crew. Their tanks and guidance are top notch. That said, I can’t bring myself to agree with the guidance to put fine filter mesh after the biological media. ALL mechanical media should be in front of the biological media to ensure the bio media gets the cleanest possible water. The benefit is that it keeps the pores in good bio media from clogging. This is critical to have any hope of generating anaerobic bacteria that can convert nitrates to free nitrogen (true full cycle) deep in the middle of the bio media.

Hi @Green Aqua team, Two months ago I started with a planted 40 liter planted tank with Eheim 2213-05. And I realize that I am using carbon sponge in the filter. Is that harmful for a planted tank? Or should I continue to use? Thank you.

Great very informative video. 👊🏻👍. I’m curious in the Oase filters would you get rid of all the blue sponges and replace it with Matrix or leave one blue filter at the bottom. ? Thx.

I would get rid of all... LOL

If you knew as much about microbiology as how to make sponsored KZbin videos, you'd do the opposite.

Hi, question about the oase filters. Do you replace the included carbon infused prefilter sponges and if so with coarse or fine sponge and how many weeks into the setup? Thank you.
