This is an entry bench that makes a strong statement. Made from mahogany in the Greene & Greene style, this entry bench with storage is sturdy enough to sit on and features ample storage for blankets, shoes, coats, or whatever stuff you might want to shove in there. Thanks to the wide panels, Domino joinery, and one-coat finish, we were able to knock this project out in five days.

I think we should start calling these arts and craft pieces as they are made by a craftsman or we could call it modern craftsman. It is not factory made and is made by an individual. Maybe in the video title he should dropped the inspired part and just give it a name. I think a new movement needs to start out there of some form. Modern society is so boring and does not really have a spirit of design like past periods of culture. In 100 years time we will be forgotten to be honest.

I really like this! You find such a good balance of curves and square corners without over-doing either! No durable finish (like poly) to protect a piece that you're inviting all the contact and use to? How does Rubio hold up to daily use like that?

Very Nice piece, Love the color. Only thing I would do diff is to have the panels be a shade or two lighter than the Rails and Legs. And possibly Mirror at least the front facing legs and panels. If there are no major issues on the grain to be mirrored. Did you use the MonoCoat? didn't see you doing a clear finish. I've only used the ones designed for flooring, and Those may take a few days to dry.

I think we have to start calling these pieces arts and craft because they are clearly made by a craftsman. We could call it Arts and Craft in Greene and Greene style. Like we do not call a Parka jacket a Parka styled jacket. Now we could also call these pieces modern craftsman. Or modern Crafts for the politically correct.

Beautiful chest! I'm building something similar, but the rail on which my lid will attach is 7/8" thick stock. I'd like to use torsion hinges, but I can't seem to find any that work with stock other than 3/4" thick. Do you think I could adapt the ones you use by mortising the front face 1/8", thus giving me 3/4" for the hinge? Thanks!

Marc...VERY nice. I plan to try this. You mentioned/showed that you didn't account for the clearance for the torsion hinges. I assume this is a measurement between the outside of the back panel, and the back of the corner post. What is the proper setback? If you were to make another, would you set the panel farther back, or just plan to champ-fer the corner again to preserve the leg, and the distances of the panels setting against the leg? With the overhang on the top, there is no way anyone would see it when it is closed.

At 4:18 the grain direction changes to "uphill", did you get away with one there or am seeing things? I am not to sure I would have attempted that having injured myself doing something similar a few month ago. Mine was a convex cut as opposed to a concave cut and maybe that was the difference. Your piece turned out fantastic and nothing flew across the shop like a rocket so that's the main thing.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 5 жыл бұрын
It was slightly uphill. But these things are not always cut and dry as in "uphill bad, downhill good". It's really a combination of things like the wood's properties, the type and sharpness of the bit, the severity of the uphill angle, and the amount of material being removed. In this case, all four of those things combined to make a cut that was perfectly safe and yielded great results.

Great project, love G&G. African mahogany, is that also known as Sapele? Also, did you do anything to close the grain? Often there are fillers sanded into the grain to smooth out the finish. I did a blanket chest, through-mortises, in Honduran + curly maple. It took much longer than 5 days. That is amazing! Keep it up.

Very nice. You've inspired me to make something similar. Also to look into green and green. 👍 At the beginning of the video you refer to the bandsaw blade guide as a safety device and say that you lower it to protect your fingers. But it isn't a safety device and offers no protection to your fingers. I believe it is there to help prevent the blade wandering along the grain when ripping and so should always be dropped down to just above the work. Thanks for posting this, I'm often asked to make entrance storage seats and will try to make some simpler versions of this.

I have been watching your channel for a long time I was watching wood talk one day. And I made the comment I would like to see more project videos then one of your key board person said this was wood talk not a project channel. But when I subscribed to your channel you were doing project. KZbin is the one that put everything out there and they don't care if is wood talk or projects. So I unsubscribed from wood talk but as for KZbin does not care. So for the Key board if you can't say something nice keep it to your self. Marc Keep up the great videos and have a great week.

hi mark i have been watching your video's for inspiration since you began. one thing i have noticed is that you always feed your timber through the thicknesser in the middle. when i trained my gaffer taught me to always start on one side and then feed the pieces through offset from the last so that you use the entire blade. this way the blades wear evenly and you save a ton of money in sharpening.
