Volume 2 takes over where Volume 1 left off, in early 1962. In this fantastic two disc set, we will see the end of individualized passenger service, and the beginnings of Amtrak. The 'Amtrak in Transition' portion of this DVD is worth the price of this set alone!
Before Amtrak, we will see passenger trains from: Milwaukee Road, CB&Q, Santa Fe, Penn Central, Gulf, Mobile and Ohio, Grand Trunk, Great Northern, Northern Pacific (and eventually the Burlington Northern), and Illinois Central.
Of course we haven't forgotten you freight fans either. You'll see freight on most of the railroads mentioned above as well on: Chicago & North Western, Soo Line, Elgin, Joliet & Eastern, Indiana Harbor Belt, Rock Island, Chicago & Eastern Illinois. There are cameo appearances on the Chesapeake & Ohio as well as the Baltimore & Ohio.
And in between all this, we'll catch commuter action on many of these roads as well: the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend, Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee, and the Chicago Transit Authority. You'll witness the changes in motive power and equipment on many of these commuter lines.
Finally, we end our tour of Chicago in 1973. We'll continue to watch the ever changing scene in both motive power, passenger and freight, as well as the Chicago skyline.
From the Camera of Emery Gulash
Approx. Running Time 2 1/2 Hours

It's so strange seeing the Sears Tower only half finished and the Standard Oil Building still having it's original marble cladding installed.

the 3rd unit on that IC piggyback is a rare GP-40X #3075. That was destroyed in a wreck later on, short lived.

Yeah, the view of the eastbound IC transfer (1:03) is indeed crossing the Sanitary and Shipping Canal, but that is nowhere near Forest Park, IL. This spot is called Bridgeport in modern terms. This is where the GM&O crosses the IC Iowa Division. Note the GM&O engines in the distance as the IC train passes.

That IC switcher is crossing the Sanitary & Ship Canal at Forest View, not Forest Park. The canal is no where near Forest Park.

The Burlington freight train was not at Cicero Hawthorne Yard. That was a transfer train on the old PRR south of Chicago Loop. See the skyscraper in the background? See the PRR signals over the tracks? Those are not Burlington's style of signals. The Burlington used "searchlight" type standard signals.

That Illinois Central Switch train is not crossing the Chicago and Sanitary Ship Canal at Forest Park. It is Crossing the CSSC at Archer Avenue near South Ashland Avenue at the Brighton Park Junction on the Galena Line of the old Chicago & Madison Northern Line.

@Amtrak1194 Rode the Panama Limited from 1972 on quite regularly, and took a trip east on the George Washington, CHI-DC, I also took a few trips north of Chicago on the old Empire Builder. The equipment was railfan interesting back then, but always crowded, lots of malfunctioning, and the crews were lazy and surly. Amtrak now is a VAST improvement over those "good old days", in my opinion. Remember, Nixon initiated Railpax to kill intercity rail travel, but Amtrak became a modern railroad.

@BNforever2009 I rode the Panama (Amtrak) several times. Even though I'd only travel as far as Mattoon, I'd always book a roomette, because the coaches were so scummy.College kids to Kankakee, Champaign and Carbondale, as well as enlisted military going to Rantoul---well worth the price (about ten bucks or so) for a little peace, quiet .and privacy.

I'm aware that this isn't "live" sound. however, the sounds used were obviously recorded during that time period. I was just stating that you probably won't hear a horn like that on a modern-day diesel.

0:18 The IC's only SD45! Wow I have only seen one picture of this unit! Wish i could have seen it in action. Great catch. Sad to see the IC fall to CN. Slowly they are taking over all the railroads i hold dear. IC, EJ&E, DM&I. Now all i have to look at is the Bloomer line to see what it must have been like in those days with slow moving GP's. Even KB&S replaced the ALCO's with GP's. Sad these changing times.
