This DVD continues the action on Green Frog's extremely popular set of Penn Central. Action in this DVD covers the years 1971 and 1972. We'll visit Ohio and Michigan, including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Niles, Toledo, Jackson, and Carleton.
Passenger and freight action abounds, as well as equipment still painted in New York Central colors and logos. We'll see the beginning of Amtrak's take-over of passenger service: catch many 'new' and old locos such as GP40-2's, GE U25C's, E-Units, Budd Rail cars, and more!
The Penn-Central also connects with other railroads such as the DT&I and the C&O.
If you love passenger service with name trains such as The Broadway Limited, The Wolverine, The Lake Shore, The National Limited, freight action with cabooses and railroads such as the Pennsy, and the New York Central, you'll love this DVD!

My grandfather started his railroad career with New York Central System in 1963 as a fireman brakeman. After the merger in 1969 he was promoted to engineer. He hated his time with penn Central and the beginning of Conrail until track conditions were alot better and locomotives were updated but enjoyed his time with the employees.

Jake, he was just in engine service. Brakemen grew up to be conductors, the captains of the trains.

I remember riding Great Norther's "Empire Builder" from Glacier Park to Chicago in the mid 1960's, and even as many Americans were driving or flying by then, the "Builder" was easily 80% occupied. The interior and exterior of the long passenger train was spotless, the Dining Car with GN silverware and china served great meals, the train still sported dome cars, one full length dome, nice coaches with clean and recently re-upholstered reclining seats and pillows, a variety of luxurious sleeping car accommodations and a " round end" observation car bringing up the markers, we arrived in Chicago right on time. We continued east to New York City on the PC's "Broadway Limited", departing 20 minutes late. the difference in the 2 trains was like day and night, the "Broadway" was.... plain, worn out, it was late and the ride was rough with lots of slow orders, yep, it still had a full Dining Car with PRR silverware and China, but poor to average food, the coaches with dirty windows and restrooms and a Lounge/Bar/Observation at the end of the train. The crew on the "Builder" was superb, while the folks stuck working for the PC's "flagship" train were trying to do their best with what they had to work with, the sleeping car rooms had freshly painted interiors ,newish carpet the sheets, blankets & pillows were new and freshly starched, but even the 1st Class sleeping car passengers suffered filthy windows, the cars rattled and rocked all the way to the NE Corridor, of course we were just about 2 hours late. If the flagship, pride of the fleet, passenger train was so bad (perhaps 50% full), we wondered just how poor their freight service was ! No wonder the Penn Central went bankrupt while the Great Northern prospered and eventually became part of today's well run BNSF !

My father grew up in Bangor PA, in late 50s, 60s and into the 70s, so he saw this happen. He was telling me about it shortly before I watched this series. Some of the model trains he handed down to me were Pennsylvania F7s and I couldn't help but be curious as to what happened to the Pennsy.

+howardkevinm I believe so, almost all ex pc/prr/nyc tracks are owned by NS in Toledo and some by CSX. But CSX tore most of it's tracks up where a former C&O yard used to be, only 1 track of the C&O tracks remain and it's overgrown but it still their and I believe that their's actually abondoned cars and possibly an engine on those tracks.

Unfortunately yes it it, Norfolk southern still have some NYC signals left and CSX still have some C&O and B&O signals left. Some ex chessie tracks have recently been removed in place for a bike trail which be be exactly where the tracks came though. I remember when I was a kid seeing all of those NYC signals and dwarf signals and the NYC powerbox and watching conrail come through. You still see lots of ex conrail stuff like the ex conrail cars, pc cars, and some leslies. Sad to see some go by and probably not ever see one again.

When was the Huron River ever along side the water level route, NY/Boston to Chicago ?
@victoriacyunczyk
@victoriacyunczyk 3 жыл бұрын
I think it was used as a diversion route when the water level route was closed. It wasn't the water level route per se.

The original NYC NY to Chicago route went through Toledo but then went NW up through Adrian, MI and kind of paralleled along US12 eventually working it's way down through Bristol and Elkhart, IN. Later they built the route from Elkhart down through Goshen, IN and over to Toledo. That northern route became secondary and parts of it still survive but it is mostly gone now. I used to see those tracks up near Jones, MI along US12 but they are torn out now. This was always a single track line I believe.

Is the second engine at 0:20 considered a slug?
@victoriacyunczyk
@victoriacyunczyk 3 жыл бұрын
It's a B unit. It could be operated within terminals by hostlers, but they would always need other units with them on the main line. They were originally developed to keep consists streamlined on passenger trains. You could say it was an early version of a slug.

Seen though out this video are now some of many fallen flag railroads that still operated in the early 1970's. YEAH I WISH I COULD SEE THEM INSEAD OF FOUCUSING ON THE ENGINES AND ZOOMING IN. in every video i every watch of fallenflags, no one ever films the cars and its super annoying. Also the one time the cars are shown you speed up the clip? How stupid can you get.
