4K is not just double of 1080p. Its 4x of 1080p. Do the math: 1920x1080 = 2073600pixels. 3840x2160 = 8294400pixels. 8294400 ÷ 2073600 = 4 times more pixels.

This includes the ability to process Xbox 360 instructions to enable a more efficient 360 emulation on Xbox1, or the efficient checkerboard rendering technique as a supplement for true 4K. Interestingly, Xbox1 features a 32MB cache of super fast ESRAM, which can be used to save memory bandwidth and speed up some parts of the rendering pipeline. This is why e.g. Forza Horizon 3 outputs at a full 3840x2160 with additional (usually framerate-crushing) 4xMSAA on 1X. But taking full advantage of it is very complicated for developers, therefore it's usually left unused. Modern consoles also feature hardware-based image upscalers. PS4's OS is a derivate of freeBSD, which means that it shares common ancestry with macOS and iOS, and is well streamlined for the console. It offers two graphics APIs; GNMX, a simple, high level interface, as well as the low level equivalent GMN, which is more powerful and complex. XBox1 runs on Windows 10 and offers Direct3D 11.x as well as Direct3D 12.x. Every Xbox1 application (except games) runs on a separate virtual machine. It aims towards maximum compatibility between PC and console, but is known for poor overall performance. TL;DR: PS4/XB1 are just compact PCs with sub-par memory performance and custom-tailored operating systems.

Would've been better if he used a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF, looks better and the weird-PSU is a little stronger. He could've definitely mated a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD/2TB HDD, to a 32GB-DDR31866, running a 4GHz Core i7-4970 and a GTX 1050 Ti-4GB-LP at stock speeds. More powerful than a PS4 Pro, but still shy of a modern Gaming PC. All of that in a box which is around the size of the original Xbox One. And one that will continue gaming in 1080p/60fps in Medium graphics for the next 3 years on the cheap... unlike the consoles like the Xbox One X.

Taking as much load off the CPU is a must for alot of those games, I wouldn't be surprised if frame-times ended up being better in 4k for some of them. Also just noticed that is an expensive thinkcentre for us Brits....£467 for a C2D....Damn thats a conversion and a half gone wrong..

Old comment I know The video is encoded by the codec to compress it and store it in a uniform standard. Playback is taking this squished data and converting it to the correct format for display. Playing games at 4k is a case of the GPU calculating and rendering the scene on its own terms. The CPU just wasn't up to the task of media playback. Ironically, the PS1's CPU isn't up to the task of playing an MP3, it simply doesn't have the horsepower, but it certainly has audio, just that audio was never compressed to such a high degree, I'd say it's similar here.

This was shockingly CPU limited... L4D2 runs 300 fps on almost anything (FX and I believe as low as a GTX 960) at 4k high settings. That C2D was definitely holding it back, that's a very easy to run game.

SFF PCs with a decent SFF card like this is basically a good alternative to consoles If you bought an SFF PC with a Sandy Bridge i5 or better and pair it with a GT 1030 or SFF GTX 1050/GTX 1050 Ti card it might matches the performance of current console or even beating it

Yeah, the Core 2 Duo is a little too extreme, but you can totally get away with this. There's plenty of AMD Athlons, FX's, or Intel i5's from older generations that are both readily available and up to the task. As long as you can take a normal form factor and don't buy the Vega with its absolutely godawful drivers, you can just crank up the res on a 1070 and game away at 4K. Bottlenecks aren't as problematic at high resolutions.

That is not how it works. Just because you have more cores doesn't mean that an application will be able to use them. Also parallelization of processes is not perfect and will always have a small performance hit. Also the q9550 is lower clocked then an e8400 so not double in the best case.

Yes, that's how it works with the Core 2 architecture. It is exactly double and 99% of applications gaming related use 4 cores or more. The 170mhz clock speed difference doesn't matter.

I have same setup with yours, M58P Core 2 duo E8400 + 8GB DDR3 + ASUS GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 low-profile passive cooling. But getting terrible temp values, CPU usage is 100% while GPU usage is around 30-50%. and another issue is, when this card is connected it prevents monitor turning on while waking up from standby.

Had to downgrade to an Ivy Bridge recently but I’m with you in spirit. And get a 4k monitor. It’s worth it. Maybe wait until HDR becomes more adopted, or just get a second hand TV.

It's a reasonable, well working setup with a GT1030. Did anyone of you get this setup get to run with a PCI Soundblaster Card. I think EAX compatiblitity would be the icing on the top. Unfortunately for me the system won't boot with a GT1030 (PCIe) and a Soundblaster X-FI XtremeGamer (PCI). Do you know of another, working configuration?

I have the same cp and a Gigabyte gt 1030. After install it says code 31 in device manager and doesn't read as gt 1030 but Nvidia 840m? Any thoughts would help...been at this 5 days now...

how much ram do you have? i will probably recommend -4gb of ram -upgrade to an SSD if you can afford it -remove any viruses if you have any -reinstalling windows

Colleague of mine got a ThinkCentre M91P (i5 2400, 8 GB RAM) from work and put a 1050ti low profile video card in it (currently the best low profile card that doesn’t need additional power), and it is a BEAST. You should review a setup like that, your results will go through the roof.
