Check into Superior Wall as they can mount directly to the exposed slab and obviously flashed prior outside the foam. Roofed with SIPS panels and sealed with 2lb foam. Great video and it showed me why that interior mounts with angle to the inside. Gave me other ideas about the sub base. I saw another video where they use 3ply poly to direct water entirely outside the additional insulation.

could this be done on an existing traditional footing that is to shallow.
@abacab87 Жыл бұрын
It can, and depending where you live, you might not need the wing insulation. It's cold in Michigan but you don't need it here in most areas, just the 14" verticle.

Great presentation. Is it ok to reduce the below slab insulation with a very good vapor barrier and go for eco board radiant heat system. The thermal mass of concrete might be a over kill for the radiant system

"I would not foresee with that that. Keep in mind that bellow slab eps is fairly inexpensive. I did as much as 15 inches with radiant heat and at those amounts it performs flawlessly. Also keep in mind that your replacing a non value add product (gravel) with eps. In some cases 15 inches of gravel places can cost more than eps walked into infill area. For the money it’s a great value. " Lance Boyce

@@GreenHomeInstitute : many thanks for the reply. Experts like you mean a lot for diy. I am from PA and the frost line is 30 inches here. I love the idea of slab on grade without basement. To make it better, can we set piers of 24 inches deep and 8 ft apart around the concrete perimeter. The outer concrete beam/footer rests on piers for additional support and ground movement. Thermal conductivity will be taken care by foam insulation around piers to make the solution inline with design

Nicely done 👍. Can I use this with an ICF house??? Thanks

You are almost always better off with a foundation. Then go all the way to the roof with ICFs.

Great video, I actually had the idea of this form then realized there is already someone making it! Do you always recommend sub-slab insulation, even if the perimeter and footing are properly insulated? Wouldn't the structure benefit from geothermal heat from the earth below the structure?

I am a firm believer in full thermal break. I do have people that believe in leaving the footer in insulated to let natural geo thermal do some work. Thanks Lance

I would only recommend under slab uninsulated if you are maintaining the room at 53-55F. Because that is what the ground will provide. While it keeps you from heating from 0, it will also just hold you there and keep absorbing your heat if you try to heat above it’s native state. So for a cold storage or place that is unattended that you don’t want to let freeze; it’s a fine option. If you want to maintain 68F then insulate under the slab sufficiently so you’re not just dumping heat into the ground, cause it’ll soak it up all century and keep drinking !

In my area, 2015 IRC requires adding R-10 under the entire slab if the structure is unheated, and 2009 Energy Code requires same if slab uses radiant heating.

A lot of confusion about putting the footer on XPS. Inspectors feel it could compress. Skipping this step creates thermal break and XPS won’t compress. Please comment.
@MonoSlabEZForm5 жыл бұрын
The eps or xps will have a psi rating. If the proper density is installed than there is absolutely no issues. Virging soil is generally engineered at 1500 psi . Even 1 lbs eps foam is 1440 psi. The math is simple and inspectors should have no issue there.
@canonicaltom2 жыл бұрын
@@MonoSlabEZForm There are 144 square inches in a square foot, so 1 psi would be 144 psf, 10 psi would be 1440 psf.

real nice presentation - however, the writing on your diagrams is too small to read on my 15" laptop screen.
