My suggestion for stringing lights is instead of going around and around the tree, go up and down vertically (think of a painting movement). That way even if a section goes bad after you get it on the tree, you can just pull a couple of the other sections inward to fill in the gap and it won't be as noticeable. But the main reason is it's way easier. You stay in one area vs having to drag your ladder around the tree.
