I bought a greenstalk last year and put a good potting soil in it. It was a disaster. The soil compacted and nothing grew. This year I used a mixture of peat and perlite with some calcium carbonate and slow release fertilizer mixed in it, planted strawberries and it looks like I'm going to have a bumper crop. By the way, I love your DIY approach. Your videos are very instructive and easy to follow. Your information is priceless. Thank you.

The boys play area looked great. Looks like they built a fort. Reminds me of being a child out in the country playing with my sister and two brothers. Some great memories. So hopefully your boys will also have great memories. It's amazing what active little minds can come with a few concrete blocks, a barrel or two, and if you're really lucky, maybe a few boards mom and dad have laying around. I love it ! Green house still looks good. And good fertilized pasture land for your garden area sounds like a winner to me. Green beans here we come. Pray the Lord blesses your efforts and that his love fills your life . Starting with those two precious boys of yours.

I posted this comment on one of your other video about that rain gathering system. Glad to hear that your barrels are staying straight. With undesturbed soil below the block it will last a long time. I moisture gets in their the soil may give way cause they barrels to tip. With the barrels are full they will weigh over 2000 pounds. This could be a dangerous situation. I personally would place solid concrete blocks on the bottom to help eliminate settling problems. My previous comment is as follows: You need a better foundation under each column. You should place two 8 x 16 x 4 inch concrete blocks at 90 degrees to the column blocks. This will give about 1 pound per square inch pressure on the ground instead of the greater than 5 pounds per square inch of your current design. Your columns may start to lean if the ground get wet under the columns. Good Luck, there were some great hints in your video! Note: If you replace the bottom block with a 8 x 16 x 4 inch block plus two more under that one you will end up with the same height. Should be able to jack up the barrels when empty, replace the columns. Once they are all updated then re-level the top horizontal boards.

You might want to wrap the barrels in black plastic as black absorb heat more If the top of the barrels are open you could try aquaponics for the strawberry's or set up a lower barrel for that, Could the sheep not go down to the lower garden giving you more room up the top nearer to the house , have you thought to AI them with a nice meat ram and the lambs could go to freezer camp at the end of summer

I have used wicking tubs for a few years now. I have learned a couple things: you need a heavy drinker, like tomatoes, cucumbers and such in order for them to be happy (zinnias hate wicking tubs) and it depends greatly on the soil or soil mixture you use. I mixed too much peat in some last year and they stayed wet all the way to the top all the time. I would also think having them inside the greenhouse in the summer im NC is too much humidity for the tomatoes to like. Maybe move them outside, rethink the soil if need be (potting soil, not garden soil) and try again.
@sam-and-angela3 жыл бұрын
Good tips and suggestions, thanks!
@gotbacon043 жыл бұрын
We did 2 wicking tubs for tomatoes and 2 tomatoes plants in raised bed. We fought fungus in the tubs more than the beds. Being in central Florida I think the humidity is the reason. We did get a few bushels of tomatoes. I think it’s worth using the tubs again with a different plant. We are looking forward to see what you guys do. Keep rocking 👍

If your wicking beds aren't filled properly they will stay too wet. Try emptying the soil out and adding a taller layer for air space then cover and refill. I've had those beds work good and I've had them not work at all. It's kind of a fine line

Bigger does not always mean better. I've found this really applies to gardening. Our eyes are bigger than our stomachs. Something smaller and maintained will produce better than large and eventually overgrown because you couldn't maintain them. Planting smaller numbers of plants and varieties will produce all you need and can handle. You can have a small area for experimenting with new things, just not large amounts. How do I know this? I've been there and done that. It makes you feel bad when you see things go to waste. I love to watch ALL your projects (I call them your adventures). As to your feral children...I love to hear them in your videos. They are ALL boy. BUT they do know when to stop and attend. You are wonderful, attentive, and loving parents. I am curious what kind of winds you deal with there and now on your TN homestead. We quite regularly get sustained winds of 40-50 mph, sometimes for days at a time. Wind gusts in the 70s aren't unheard of, either. Those winds instantly destroyed some greenhouse fabric/plastic that we got from an Orscheln. It was a small, cheap greenhouse structure, but the plastic was somewhat similar to what you described, but it certainly wasn't as well attached as yours is.

Does that mean that the huge garden you worked so hard on last year--with the fence and water piped down to it--is not going to be planted now? What are you doing with that area? We live on one+ acre here in North Central Florida, but the majority of the acre is covered with huge tall trees, and it has been so interesting to see how many things you can fit onto an acre w/o the trees.
@sam-and-angela3 жыл бұрын
We're not exactly sure what will become of that spot this year. It's technically outside of our 1 acre, but being on family land still usable for what we would like (within reason). We will reuse the fencing, irrigation, etc. for the garden spots at the house, so no problems there.

Just curious what is the heat retention on the plastic film compared to the solid panels. Could you grow all winter long in that set up??
@sam-and-angela3 жыл бұрын
I don't know about heat retention, but this is commercial greenhouse plastic. For growing through winter I would add a layer of plastic (doesn't have to be greenhouse quality) inside to give a closed air gap between the two. It would give insulation and really help.
