Greenlee GT 12A Non Contact Voltage Detector

I have one of these and was testing for live voltage on an outside lamp post. I had shut off every breaker in the house, including the main, but it was still beeping when I put the sensor up to the wiring inside the outdoor post. So it make me wonder if it can give a false reading. I need to replace the lamp outside but am not confident that the circuit is open.

Mine was only used once and when i tried it for the second time it didnt work. When i press the button it only beeps and lights on for 5 seconds and turns off again. I dont know whats wrong with it. Any suggestions,,?
