From the small hammer, small scissors, thimble, shoe buckles, and buttons, I would say a shoe maker or tailor lived there. Always dig up iron! Lots of cool, old antiques are iron! And, valuable! Love your videos!

This is the 3rd video of yours I be watched this morning and I must say that I'm deeply impressed! You've rekindled my desire to get my detector out and get to digging again. I moved to Frankfort, KY. 4 yrs. ago and haven't had my equipment out since. I live on an area that the original family heirs still own dating back to the first settlers in the area. I just got my first metal detector and have been out twice with it, digging bottle caps out of local beaches (a recent video on my own channel chronicles my first outing). My first day I dug all trash, bottle caps, pieces of metal, etc. I think it was day 3 I got my first coin in a field, then I found my first ring (on day 3!!!!) a HUGE full 1 ounce silver Bikers ring with an Aztec God on top of a Pyramid! Still my biggest ring find ever! I thought-man this hobby's easy- then I didn't find another ring for almost 2 months, and it took me almost a year to find my first silver coin. The piece you call a fire poker (your imagined sword) looks more likely to be a "POT HOOK" for retrieving a cooking pot/kettle from it's place on the fire in the hearth. Most "pokers" I've seen have a much more pronounced hook on them and yours looks like it is made to hook the thick wire type handles of the period. I could be wrong, but that one is pretty close to what ours looks like at our camp, only your find is most likely much, much older than ours is. GREAT VIDEO BTW.......

Dutch ovens were becoming very popular at that time frame. Everyone would have had a lid tool for removing without dumping the coals and ash into the pot. Now if he had found say a salamander (tool for toasting) it would have been very unique. I love when people find these old items.

A lot of fireplaces had a swing arm that was used to position the cooking pot away from the heat in order to just keep it warm .

Yeah I found it odd he acted surprised to dig iron targets...I could understand it if you are hitting nail after nail (I've had to give up on spots just too much junk). But being out in the woods where most stuff is rusted away that is small and the home was probably log and no nails used man dig away. Why not!

@@Meekerextreme Meeker, I think he usually ignores the iron signals, or tones them out as, with his 2 to 3 hour hikes in to where he goes, and the same hiking out, he has precious little digging time, so he usually concentrates on the mid & high tones!!! Just my guess. Rob

Dont think it's a poker, they used that for pulling up the lids on pots when their hot, and pulling up on the handles of the pots to move them around.

On a sight like that I would dig everything. Because if there isn't any contamination you know everything is a relic. That is a trip back in time that would give you a complete an eye into the life of a colonial household. Especially that one where you know from the items that it was most likely a family or at least a couple. Awesome site and finds. Dig it all is the lesson of that site!!

As a kid in Minnesota we used to catch spotted salamanders and make terrariums to put them in. We would watch the salamander grow and reproduce in the terrarium. It was the neatest thing ever. We would then replace the adults and the young salamanders back into the forest/swamp where we found them. As a kid it was cool to see nature unfold before your eyes. I was 9 or younger. I left MN and never saw another Spotted Salamander. I'm now 50. It was great to be a young kid in the 70's and be outside all day and come home when the street lights came on. Not many kids today could say they have done that.

Thanks for these beautifully done videos. Though a city boy I have a lifelong love of rambling the woods of New England, starting with hiking with my dad in the Blue Hills near Boston. Spanish-American silver and gold were legal tender in the US until 1857, when the mint was finally able to procure enough bullion to satisfy the needs of American commerce with its own coinage. The many forgotten farmsteads are silent testament to the US’ westward expansion. Even as early as the 1820s people abandoned the thin stony soils of the northeast for the unbelievably fertile western Plains terrirories, where it was said you could throw a seed on the ground and the wheat would fairly jump back out at you.
