@stephanginther90516 жыл бұрын
So I just looked up the origins of Greensleeves, while its age is not known exactly, the first known reference to the song was in a songbook from *1584* making the song _at least_ 433 years old. Cool huh.
@Cassienka6 жыл бұрын
Stephan Ginther There's a persistent belief that it was written by King Henry VIII For Anne Boleyn. Good story lol,
@stephanginther90516 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah, I read about that. It's one of the most popular theories, historians say its unlikely because the style of songwriting that was used in Greensleeves was an Italian style that didn't become popular in England until 30 years later. However, Kings _did_ travel and study other cultures, so I would argue its possible he chose that, unknown in England style of songwriting for that vary reason. A type of song she's likely never heard before might be better received.

@islaoleary21316 жыл бұрын
Stephan Ginther Henry VIII wrote this song
@stephanginther90516 жыл бұрын
Isla O'Leary that is the most popular theory but not by historians. You see, the style of songwriting that Greensleeves was written in was an Italian style that was not known in England yet. It did become a popular style in England, but only some 40 or so years after this song was written (possibly in part _because_ of this song). Since kings travel it is certainly possible that he learned the style IN Italy and wrote it that way for that very reason, but ultimately historians do not think Henry VIII what the author.

The thing that had convinced me was the "greensleeves", because I had read before that was her nickname in court. Perhaps he took someone else's song and adapted it to her? Like Elton John did with the song about Marilyn Monroe and sang it for Princess Diana's funeral?

This song was used as an alarm sound of the clock which my grand mother had, when I was a child. I suddenly feel like listening to this song and looked for it through KZbin. Then, I found this chanel. Greensleeves you sing is so beautiful, and makes me remember the feeling I was hearing the sound of the clock. So nostalgic.

Peter, I have followed Home Free before the sing off! More do after the sing off. Then I found out about you Peter Hollens. You really surprised me saying this was a "one take". I am one of those who was a child then teenager listening to Folk Music. At age 17-18 my cousin and I went to see the Graduate. I lived a very sheltered life as a child. My Mama would never have let me go see that movie but she nor I knew the details of the movie. My cousin was my age & knew all the details but knew not to tell me. It wasn't my Mama that had a heart attack when she found out. It was my Aunt (cousins Mama) that was so upset. I loved your take on both the songs from the Graduate. I Loved Peter, Paul & Mary. I also loved Teach Your Children Well by Crosby, Stills & Nash. I Loved The Mama's & The Papa's. After this period of liking folk art I went on liking Country Music. I never liked any hard rock and their bad language. Today it is Gospel or Country Music and when I hear old Folk Music. Sorry for the long message and I will check-out your new Folk Art Album. BTW, will it be on ITunes. I listen to music on my tablet or IPad. Keep up the great work Peter.
