Actually, pruning is a very good idea if you have a LONG growing season too, (I’m in CA with my 1st frost date is 12/10). We get powdery mildew issues as the leaves age, so pruning and growing vertically helps keep the plants healthy for longer.
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 11 ай бұрын
You're right. That's another good reason why to prune ... You could always mix baking soda with water and spray it on the leaf. That helps too for powder mildew .. thanks for watching 🌱

I accidently grew my squash vertically this year. My cat kept laying on my new plants so I put tomato cages over everything to protect them. I decided to leave them because I really like the way they keep the plant off the ground. It is so much easier to spot squash that are ready to pick too!

New subbie. Thank you for posting. I'll be 67 in Sept, and I've decided to grow my squash vertically for the first time ever, although I confess, I love the huge leaves of squash plants. I actually kept seeds from a butternut squash and planted and they grew like crazy so I researched and the recommendation was to trellis it, so I moved the plants beside our fence. I never grew it before, but I learned the canned libby's pumpkin puree is actually 75 % butternut squash and 15 % Dickinson pumpkins, which I'll plant in July with the intention to can for the winter. My neighbors also love squash so I planted five more seeds which all sprouted and I need to transplant them I'm also growing corn, the three sisters, corn squash and green beans for the first time. Gosh, sorry for the long response. We finally moved from an apt back into a house, and my first garden in three years. Gardening is mt greatest joy and passion, although my back thinks otherwise !!! Thanks again for your great tips. Pruning is the absolute right thing to do. My friend is a master gardener and was the head gardener for the huge amusement park here. He has a masters degree in horticulture, and preaches about pruning and using a plants energy for fruit production, not leaves. I live just outside richmond, va. Again, sorry for the long comment. Happy gardening ...

@@Greentgarden dude, that was the wrong thing to say to me. I could talk gardening forever. But after watching your videos I went out that evening and pruned all the plants. Talked to my son asking for his help over the weekend to stake everything. We are going vertices. But overnight I got my first yellow squash. 3 weeks from seed to bearing fruit. The others have buds. I'm weird, but this scientist hooked ekg monitors to the plants in his lab, that were there for personal beauty. He was shocked he got a reading. When he cut a piece off one plant, his words, the plant fainted. Using quantum theory he experimented with simply think he was going to trim them, all the plants fainted. He won a prestigious award for his research. Now before I cut my grass I tell it to faint, just to be cautious, and as I trimmed the squash and tomatoes I explained why I was doing it. Every plant in my garden is from seeds this year for the first time in my life. But an old farmer who went to college to learn about restoring the soil, etc ... work, plant smart, not hard, but he told me right before frost to till in garden and plant clover in October. Even when there's snow, the clover is restoring the soil, and then till it back into the soil just before the date of the last frost. I will stop, but sincerely thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience. My garden is really small with only plants I like, but it's going to easily feed four families, and I keep planting seeds through the end of June, then August for fall veggies, and the excess I'm donating to a program I'm trying to start with opening a mobile outdoor soup kitchen targeting the homeless, but also donating to senior housing. And we're canning and freezing as much as we can. Last thing, do you grow cabbage? I bought so.e Russian giant cabbage seeds for fun. The seedlings are huge. I have extra. Do you want me to send you some? Patricia
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 11 ай бұрын
Wow ! That's amazing! God bless you for all that donation.. I really don't grow cabbage , I was trying back 2 plants this year, I feel like it takes up too much space and too long lol but thank you .. keep up the hard work and the amazing donations! I always end up giving family, friends and neighbors, but if I have enough this year I do want to make a donation to to my local food pantry.. next year I want to start donating seedlings so I might end up seating a lot. And that's good you're doing all your plants from seeds , same here.. the best way

First time here. Really great info and I am now subscribed. Only suggestion I have is to explain the difference between a male and female flower. I just learned this elsewhere and if I hadn’t, I would not have known what you were talking about. Thanks for the great info.

Thank you Karen 🌱 sorry about that , I I did quite some videos on male and female flowers and hand pollinate , I try not to do too much of it. UPDATE: 2 weeks later I wanted some new potatoes with dinner tonight so I decided to dig into the bag and see how well the potatoes were actually doing. We are about 90 days from planting. I have to say I was thrilled beyond all measure that I got 4 lb and 20 potatoes from one 5 gallon grow bag. I have every confidence that when the rest of the grow bags mature, the harvest will be over 60 to 70 lb for 14 grow bags. We live on drained swampland and I have never been able to get the soil amended to the point where it would grow any more than just a few small potatoes. This way of container growing potatoes is epic! I will never grow potatoes in the ground again! Thank you so much for helping me learn to do it right.
