It's not Jokic's fault that Murray was out so long (entire season+), Gordon has missed so much time, and Barton was out in two playoff runs. It's like the opposits of the usual Chris Paul scenario where his best teammates would be generally healthy in the playoffs, but then he'd get hurt (L.A., Houston, PX).

You are right about having charisma and wanting to be a star. But just like Prince who used to live in the cold lands of Minnesota, it does add to Joker's mystique. Luka on the other hand wants to be a star. Luka wasnt an adult yet and was already a star in Madrid and in Europe. He is destined to end up in LA, Miami maybe even NY. He wants all the smoke and all the glamour. He'll marry some singer/actress, get divorced within 3yrs, etc. Getting the brothers Jokic would be hilarious and terrifying for the studio crew but sounds totally epic if accompanied by a couple of bottles of sljivovitsa brandy.

I think that is context needed to explain how great jokic is right now. He’s not playing really good and giving the media cute sound bites or anything similar to endear himself to the media. I could’ve shown my family who don’t watch basketball a pic of giannis a few years ago and most would’ve known who he is. Jokic at current 2-time mvp would be completely unknown. They would probably guess he was a European soccer star. Being that low-key and still getting universally recognized for your play is wildly impressive.

Thank you for saying it Witty, part of the issue with NBA is best players aren’t being sold well by the league or it’s media partners. Also the dumb mook sports heart feels like what they’re seeing is “wrong”. All non point guards are dependent on a second player because they have to be setup to succeed. Bulls are having this issue now without a PG, huge difference with and without. Jokic isn’t a 40pt scorer, and Embiid is and still hasn’t had any more post season success. Giannis is and only did it with years of team building, going all in, and trusting when people wanted change (Bud). It’s not the players fault, it’s the leagues. Jokic will go his whole career avoiding being a public figure, if they want the casual to be able to enjoy this they’re going to need to do their job and explain what is going on to those who don’t understand. Great way to also teach the games history and players, something the NBA would do well to improve on as well.

All the NBA does is promote their players, even players that are barely so so in the league are talked about Non-Stop. The NBA gets more talk-radio and plug time than any other sport easily. They're season bleeds into 4 other sports seasons. 5 if you include us soccer (which most of us don't lol) the NBA seems like all they do is promote. It's not just done by the league or by the league Partners, it's done by all of them non stop.

I honestly think Jokic's relatively anonymous greatness is also at least in part due to that ubiquitous buzzword of "player empowerment." You've got dudes like LeBron and KD that are creating their own media apparatuses that command so much attention in the space, that an inevitable side effect is that players of that stature who don't engage in that kind of brand building, even if they're great on the court, get sidelined a bit in media coverage. When one of the major places that players go to provide the kind of insider information that was once the domain of journalists is run *by* LeBron James, that inevitably makes sports media to some extent *about* LeBron James (along with the handful of other dudes that have popular forums for players to come on to). If you're not someone that select few hangs out with or likes, you're effectively frozen out of many of the more attention-grabbing outlets for basketball news. Add to that the elements that were brought up here: being in a somewhat smaller Denver market, cultural/language issues that Jokic may face as someone not from this country, etc., and I think it's a lot for even a player as undoubtedly transcendentally talented as Jokic to overcome. All that said, please give Embiid an MVP this year. He's been so good for so long, and he deserves his flowers while he's still at the peak of his powers (rhyme not intended).
