Excellent interview and great to see Greg on the channel. As a proponent of EVs, I am fully aware of the challenges we face in SA when it comes to EV readiness. I'm grateful to companies such as Accenture who are able to develop sound and workable solutions within the EV ecosystem in terms of charging infrastructure government subsidies, the development of charging point operators and technical support solutions when it comes to charging apps. South Africa is scaling it's CPOs and soon Charge - formerly Zero Carbon Charge and Chageabilty will be fully operational in this year. Further to what Greg said, I'd like to add that property managers and owners start adding EV charging into residential developments and business office parks ASAP.

Am a great E. V enthusiast... Just think it's the future for more than one reason and the sooner we develop it for complete integration into the transportation system the better for us all, thanks for starting the process and proving that it is possible even at such a early stages of development of charge stations and that the systems are going to eventually program and except all charging programs will accelerate the transition so much better, the quality of the electric vehicles like BYD and Tesla and lot more coming into the market will make this a reality world wide a lot sooner than most people would like to realize, well done ✨🎊💯

South Africans honestly need to travel more. We are going through exact same teething issues and sceptism developed countries went through. EVs are inevitable, SA is getting there sooner than we think
@tshegofatsokgoroba675327 күн бұрын
Firstly, whatever the stated range, the real world range is usually about 30% less so there's that. Secondly, winter will eat into that range even further compounded by the fact that charging these things in cold weather is ill advised. Then there's the total trip time that would probably double or triple compared to an ice equivalent. They're not worth it.

@@SwartgalligeCC I worked it out that if I had to buy the BYD Dolphin my fuel cost would come down to less than a quarter of what it is now. That is charging at home, excluding possible benefits of installing solar or the possibility of charging at work if it is available, which I am sure many employers could consider if they have more solar power than needed.

The majority is almost always wrong, I've come to experience over my 60 years on this earth. Just like the horse-cart were replaced by the ICE driven automobile, and this came about with lots of kicking and screaming, so will the ICE-mobile be replaced by the EV. Now, third world countries like most in Africa and many other places, will be struggling, as they do not manufacture cars originating in their countries, and since, over time, most all manufacturers of ICE vehicles will either die or change to manufacturing of EV's, the old die-hard 3rd world boytjies will just have to change with them!!!
@pauldbeer23 күн бұрын
Yeh, might be so now, but the change is inevitable, and will happen! Time is the issue here, and your 1%, or even 0.1% now, will change to 100% in the not too distant future!! I'll venture to say inside the next 20-30 years, the old ICE-cart will be but only a memory of the past!!
@Ilikepie1885523 күн бұрын
@@pauldbeer ICE had many advantages over horse carts, electric does not, matter of fact, it has a lot of disadvantages which is why its no where near replacing ICE cars. plugin hybrids probably is the best way to go.

Elon does business in the way he wants to do business. The Swedish unions has been on strike for many months and he is ignoring them and China changed its ownership laws to accomodate them. So if SA wants the infrastructure and cars they will have to adapt.

You have to start somewhere and thank you to the early adoptors.. DC current is VERY dangerous (400V and 800V) so these should be professionally installed and should be "fool proof". AC (slow) charing is fine for at home (overnight - 8 hours+) but to make EV roadtrips sustainable you need DC (30 mins for 80% charge etc).

Big expensive EVs and PHEVS are nearly irrelevant for driving adoption and charger rollout. Just make a small PHEV hatchback with 80-100 km of electric range, a 1l 3-cyl engine, a battery system we can charge at home with variable wattage solar or a solar carport. Oh and don't make it stupid expensive like all the others with gimmicky tech stuff that just make it unnecessarily expensive. Gimme the equivalent of a CitiGolf, but PHEV. Make it locally to avoid ridiculous import taxes. If PHEVs and EVs have any future here, it won't be via the luxury market.

I have just bought a cyberster wow! I believe most hybrids are a fraud. Look at their battery size and range. Typically under 30 km? More cost, more weight and more complexity. More maintenance costs. Indeed the worst of both worlds. For many evs are appropriate, for some, not so. I recently bought a second hand Mini electric as a town car. Same price as an ice engined mini. Still got great warranties. And best of all i mainly charge them from my solar system. Way to go!

Im not so sure that EV's will be the future of mobility only. They are not that green. There are great hydrogen tech around the corner. And much more availability of hydrogen. The import taxes are just to high in SA, and this makes these EV's way too expensive. Where will all that lithuim come from?
