This is an excellent roundtable discussion on comedy. Who would be at the roundtable for 2014? The Hollywood Reporter must be commended for this series of long and enlightening shop talks on the craft of writing, directing , and other aspects of TV & film work.

After watching the newer roundtables, this one is weird to listen to on a technical level. Someone made a really dumb decision putting them in a warehouse with such massive echo. It's distracting. The discussion itself is alright, if not quite as funny as other THR roundtables.

Parks, New Girl, The Office :') You need drama and emotional moments in order to invest in the characters, to care enough to go back to the show every week. I like my comedies to be funny, smart and also deep. I like to laugh but also get emotional. New Girl and Parks are definitely the best comedies on tv right now.

When shows are dumped, it feels like betrayal if we become attached to a show and the characters. I'm one of those people who waits to see if it's there for a long haul, because I get involved. And when I do watch I watch 2-3-or more seasons over a period of a week, then buy the dvd's if I love the show. There's no loyalty to the viewer by networks; there is by Showtime and HBO...

People Are Complaining, You Are just not listening. Yes there are al ot of shows but most of them are crap, I find myself saving shows for later month when my only options will be jersey shows or some others kind of crap. This is why we DVR the shows rather than consume them right away. and now you are doubling the number of shows by creating 10 episodes shows (which is great For Justify) but then this same trend also doubles the number of crap shows

stuntdevil44 False. Women are written better in theater than any other medium. There's even been a ton of evidence explained in articles recently about how the most expansive and "meaty" roles are in theater, especially for character actresses. It should also, coincidentally, be noted that the only female showrunner on this panel, Liz Merriweather, started out as a playwright. I agree that it would be nice to have more female showrunners. There has been an increase though, which is nice and much better than in the film world. The Mindy Project, Girls, Suburgatory, Enlightened, of course the now-cancelled 30 Rock- it's too bad there couldn't be more here.

it's people who were nominated for emmies. and showrunners don't get nominated, shows do. That's not sexist. It's a clear fact indicated by the gender represented by the nominees above. Should there be more shows run by women? That would be great. But to really disqualify your point, how do those mail show runners above have anything to do with whether or not they're women? Are you telling me that if you got offered the job of running a show you'd turn it down and insist a woman have the job instead just for the sake of representation? Doubtful.
