Alex Horne shows Greg Davies his exciting new gadget plus Sue Perkins, Lucy Beaumont, and Sam Campbell recreate some famous works of art to varying degrees of success using sticky notes: Munch’s The Scream, Mona Lisa and Van Gogh’s…. Poppies? Taken from Taskmaster Series 16 Episode 4.

I would have tried to do something similar to Julian and Susan, of doing something really simple, yet easily recognizable. "Red" was a really good one to do because of how easy it is. Sam's is astonishingly impressive, though. Even given he did the grid to keep track.

I would like to think I have the artistic ability (and forethought to sketch out a rough draft) to do something like Sam and Sue's, or have enough art knowledge to immediately think of a painting that either is repetitive or monochromatic like Julian and Susan's; but if I'm totally honest mine would very much be like Lucy's.

My idea was to do a Mondrian, seemed like a relatively easy thing to do with the square sticky notes, but a Rothko is an even better idea.

i think lucy pronounced "van gogh" differently every time.

Which probably means that, on average, she was closer to the correct pronunciation than 90% of English speakers.

She pronounced largely correctly the first time as "van hoch" using the guttural CH sound, like in the Scottish "Loch" or in "Channukah." But then switched to the more traditional British pronunciation of "van goff." Which really bugs me because where the hell are you getting an "F" sound?

I should clarify, I know where the F sound comes from, but this is why English is considered such a difficult language to learn. According to our pronunciation rules, "Van Gogh" could be pronounced as "van goff," "van go," or "van gaow."

@@billyeveryteen7328 - It's *a person's name.* The "pronunciation rules" that apply are the ones used by the _owner_ of the name. And she very definitely _didn't_ pronounce it correctly the first time. Or any time after that. The main problem isn't even the ending or "the F sound" (which is indeed wrong - at least in that part of the name - but if you're going to apply "English pronunciation rules", then you have to accept it comes from the same place as in "tough" or "rough"). No, the main problem is the first G in "Gogh" (which she also didn't pronounce correctly, BTW - I just just joking that pronouncing it differently every time meant at least there was a chance she'd eventually get it right, whereas most English speakers get it _consistently_ completely wrong).

@@RFC3514 Those pronunciation rules, for whatever reason, tend to get thrown out for long-dead historical figures. Which is why in 1492, it wasn't Cristoforo Colombo that "sailed the ocean blue."

I think if I had to do this I would do a relatively all right job if I drew a little guide first. I was always good at those drawings as a kid where you copy another drawing and it’s split up into squares. My problem is I don’t think I’d actually be able to think of an art piece that I can picture clear enough to copy just off my brain. I’m telling myself to think of a famous piece of art but I’m mostly just thinking of the word “art piece” over and over. I also worry I’d be too much of a perfectionist and not finish in time. I was infamous in school for taking forever to finish everything because I got too hung up on the small details that really didn’t matter but they mattered to me. I never would have thought of doing those simple or repetitive pieces, that was smart of them, in my mind when I hear ‘art piece’ I associate it with like realism and Impressionism.
