Greg Judy details new pond construction steps for you to use on your own pond. Go to greenpasturesfarm.net to order my book No Risk Ranching that details pond construction design. When you catch water on your land with a pond, its free high quality water. Good for livestock and great for fishing.

Overgrazing really increases the speed at which sediment refills a pond, especially where there is a grade involved (I learned that from you at one of your workshops and then witnessed the truth of it on my own property). The newer ponds I’ve fenced off and had the concrete frost-free, gravity fed, livestock waterers installed below the dam. There was an interesting article in the April 25, 2019 issue of The Midwest Cattleman about constructing a floating fence access to ponds at which to allow the livestock limited access to water themselves. I think I may give this a try on a few older ponds that are currently unfenced and just run a solar fence wire around the rest of the pond perimeter to keep the cattle off the dam and out of the pond with the exception of the drinking area of the floating fence.

I don’t even mix the concrete, I just pour dry quickcrete up to the lip, run a hose to the side of the tank, then fill tank with water and let it set with tank full, has always worked for me.

the Katt it is a little gray colored from the Portland after doing it this way, but it settles. You can then drain the tank and clean it if you are worried about it, but I don’t think it will harm the cattle.

The tire tanks I have set I always put the concrete in dry. Tamped it well under the bead. Added enough dry concrete to the top edge of the bead. Then put water in it to cover the concrete by a foot or so. Then let it set for a few days. Add more water if necessary. I think keeping the concrete covered with water might help it to cure more properly.

I know you're not a fan of swells, but would it be beneficial in this case to help diverts some of the water into your pond?

I hate swales, I will wait for the rain. Swales make great mud holes when you run 300 head of cattle around them. But yes, swales might fill it up faster.

I see that I will have to drain one of my ponds and have that dredged out. Spent this afternoon working on saving the pond dam we've had so much rain, it's spilling over some. So it will be a great time to install one of these tire tanks for the pastures below. What if you have pastures above also that need a water supply from the pond? Have you ever tried a ram pump for that situation? This will be for just 8-10 cows or equivalent in sheep.

Hi Greg I'm planning on widening a pond that's on a high point on the farm to service water troughs, the fact that's it's fed by a spring my thinking is that it doesn't need to be too big.

Hi Greg. We’ll be digging our first pond soon. Any advice on overflow protection? Do you use spillways, or do you have another pipe going through your dam? Thanks!

Adam Lambert just a heads up when we build are ponds we make sure to look at the Topography of the landscape. This way we can calculate the amount of land that will be draining or running off in to your pond. Depending on your soils infiltration rate and the average amount of rain fall your location has is how you can calculate the cubic feet of water coming in and what you need to do for a spill way. We put a over flow tube in as well as an spillway!

Where's the overflow on your dam? If it fills up as much as you're saying, it looks like it'll have very little freeboard, so I'd think an overflow would be a very good idea (much more than that little perforated pipe, obviously).
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 4 жыл бұрын
There is a 12' wide earthen spillway on the opposite side of the pond. It is a full 3 feet below the top of the dam. It's best to have at least 3' of overboard.

hello would u consider cattle grazing on fresh planted pasture
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 4 жыл бұрын
Only if the new sod could hold up your animals. It does no good to turn animals onto a freshly planted field that has no root structure yet. All yo will do is punch deep holes all over your new field. Let your forage get a decent height first and then graze it. Do not graze the field iof it is soaked in water. You will damage your grass stand.

so should i leave it for hay the first year
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 4 жыл бұрын
@@frankieramos1910 no you can graze it, just make sure the ground is not soaked and will hold up an animal. Just graze the top third of the plants and which will encourage more leaves to form on your new plants. Think about a rose bush when you prune it, more appendages appear where it was pruned.

Brent Wow. I’ve had one in a stock pond from time to time but they’ve never cleaned one out of fish. You must have a whole lot of ponds. Stocking 10 ponds cost me less than 2K .
@Digger927
@Digger927 4 жыл бұрын
@@BonnieBlue2A I do have a lot of ponds but it's not the cost of stocking them. My valuation is the cost it would take to replace the fish that were eaten. I had over twenty ponds I had stocked and managed since I was a kid. I could go catch 5-12lb pound bass, huge crappie, bluegill and channel cats up to 15 pounds all day long, every day of the week. All of those big fish are gone. The channel cats I had uncountable dollars in fish food in since I was 13 years old in the late 80's. My valuation was grossly lowball if you could even go buy the numbers of fish in the size range otters cleaned out it'd be in the many tens of thousands of dollars.
