Highlights from the Olympic Stadium as Britain's Greg Rutherford wins Gold in the Men's Long Jump Final.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

8.31 metres. I suggest you all take your tape measure out to see what this distance actually looks like.... ...then take a run and a jump, and see how far you get.

@theren8311
@theren8311 8 жыл бұрын
I get your point on the distance not being 'all' that, but question yourself as to why it's not. You are comparing him to, and let's be honest, up to at least three men in history (Ivan, Carl and Mike) (obviously quite a bit more have jumped over (8.50m/28', but how often do?) because these men are constantly jumping at the level. When compared to all the other jumpers in history, 8.31 is pretty decent win on any given day. When these guys were winning, second place was around that distance. When they retired, winning became around that distance (Except Dwight Phillips in '05 and '09, which correct me if Im wrong were his only championship winning jumps over 8.50 and Menkov '13 and Saladino '07).. And as great as Ivan was, he had outdoor championship wins in the 8.40 ranges 2/5 times.

Like they're being poked with a stick You see, real racism is hatred towards or holding a group down based on racial differences - racism isn't about mentioning the bleeding obvious about who traditionally wins sprints or long/triple jumps (as Carl Lewis himself implied when he said "we're just built better")

no he didn't. You saw a look of frustration and resignation. He knows he's jump better than his 8.17 here.....on about 30 occasions, with an 8.54m PB. Athletes get disappointed with themselves when their performances don't match their own honest expectations. Professional athletes know what their capabilities are and what form they're in. As he said , Greg's his best mate on tour and he's pleased for him

Very disappointing final. Long jump standards for men and women has fallen a lot.not sure why but 8.31m is very weak. Just as a comparison Ashton Eaton jumps 8.23m in the Decathlon !!! Back in the days Carl Lewis mike Powell , Ivan Petroso would jump 8:30 in their warm ups!! Same with women. They are struggling to break 7m when back in the days Jackie Joyner , H Dressler would win with jumps 7.40 and more. Note that J Joyner jumped in the Heptathlon 7.27m!!!!! Yeap!!

Soc Geo It's difficult to say. In general I'm pretty skeptical of old olympics records that far outperform the current world's best, because I can't imagine that the fitness levels and nutrition got worse. But it could be that those were just freakish individuals. Or maybe the conditions (2012 olympics) on that day weren't the best. 2015 Rutherford won with 8.41 meters. And his best is 8.51. Or maybe in some disciplines performance enhancing drugs have a bigger affects than in other disciplines (jumping > 100m).
