You have such a small percentage chance of landing a band that will let you thrive like this. Greg was smart enough to go to school and write a lot of their music, which gives him the freedom to and space to play such insane and entertaining live shows. One of the guys explains that he "Only plays in fills...", but honestly it makes total sense for the sound and compositions. And keeps the live shows super fresh not only for the audience, but also for the band.

I saw Deerhoof tonight and Greg absolutely crushed it with literally just a snare, kick, floor tom, and a ride. Guy doesn’t even need a hi-hat

Greg sounds like what would happen if you took John Bonham, a young Keith Moon, Rashied Ali, and Stewart Copeland and combined them into one minimalist drummer and then added a massive amount of improvisational dynamics.

@@nunooliveira1628 the first time I saw Deerhoof in 2014 my mom (who was kind enough to bring me) compared Saunier to Animal as well

I fucking love Greg! He represents this... like... guiding light of ferocious creativity. I appreciate how much risk he takes while playing live, although I can't imagine how hard it is to play with him.... "how many counts are in the phrase __this time__, Greg?" (see clip 20 for example)

Listening again, there's a tension between leading and listening in his playing, which is soooo good. It's not "perfect" but oh my God is it dynamic.

Boah - the sax/voc-dude in the free form duets is Akira Sakata!? Didn't know the two perform(ed) together (I love both the mid 70s Yamashita Trio and Deerhoof madly)

Wtf aren't there more comments on this THE BEST drummer in the mf WORLD. Change my mind.

It's because he doesn't use a huge kit with all the bells and whistles, and uses "junk" drums. Like whatever he like the sound of he uses. I'm more impressed he can make use of such a minimal kit, that is true skill!

Greg Saunier is the greatest. truly. I've been enjoying his drumming since Reveille! On top of that, Greg is a VERY nice person (so are all of Deerhoof). He snuck me into a 21+ show because I was only 19 by letting me carry in one of his drum bags.

It's hard to argue with this. Zach Hill maybe? but I think Greg is more musical. I saw Billy Cobham live and up close in 1972, the only thing that can compete.

I have also thought of Brian Blade in relationship to Greg Saunier..the way they push/pull the tempo of songs and seem to lead the band with it..or something..both amazing!

This band is so cool with the female lead she’s awesome. This guy is so kick ass on a 3 piece kit I’m embarrassed to be a drummer. Maybe I should cut my kit size back.
