For years, WCW had built up Lex Luger as a legitimate main event star. Originally Vince McMahon hired Luger to replace the aging Hulk Hogan.
The big push came in 1993 when Lex slammed Yokozuna and the Lex Express was born! Everyone thought Luger would easily become to next WWF World Champion but it wasn't meant to be.
Now hear from the Hall of Famer, Greg the Hammer Valentine, an opponent on Luger's on WCW Nitro. Find out why Lex had trouble in WWF and what other WCW talents like Road Warriors experience the same.
We also mention how Ric Flair's WWF run could have been different if he had jumped to WWF at Summerslam 1998 like originally planned.

That's what is so cool about Valentine: Greg was willing to put anyone, even if he wasn't as skillful as The Hammer was. That's also why I respected the upper midcarders like Valentine or Hennig because those guys are willing to put anyone over without having a huge ego. Greg, if u are reading the comment section, thank you for not only being a hard-nose performer but being a good-hearted individual. I'm sure Johnny is very proud of his son.

Actually, there were times when Greg Valentine wasn't willing to put another guy over. In fact, he had to leave WWE because he refused to job to Earthquake. Not long after that, he quit WCW after refusing to job to Sting. The problem for Valentine in the 1990s is that he was in his 40s, but he looked like he was in his 50s. He was not in any position to refuse to job to the much younger talent in any promotion he worked for.

He's right about the Warriors. The thing is that Vince always said "I dont hire talent, I create talent" (or something along those lines) thats his thing, he didnt want it to look like he was using another promotions product, so he wanted to rebrand em. I've said a thousand times that the Demolition/LOD feud was horribly handled. There was a ton of ways it couldve been done better..and also, Vince didnt let them be the Road Warriors. The color change wasnt too bad but the plastic spikes were..and in a sense, it wasnt the Road Warriors vs. Demolition that ppl had wanted to see forever, it was the "Legion of Doom"..Vince McMahons version of the Warriors.
@Goldenbane
@Goldenbane 2 жыл бұрын
I realize they were named after a movie...but I honestly thought "The Legion of Doom" was a better name than "The Road Warriors." But yeah, that whole feud was a total fiasco. Vince can be an absolute stupid jackass a lot of times.
@seacbareid1985
@seacbareid1985 2 жыл бұрын
@@Goldenbane Really? I preferred the original name, but maybe only because it was the original, and youre absolutely right, just like the Flair-Hogan feud, ppl say the house show 'test runs' didnt not really show any real interest, but its bc I think Vince was never a real wrestling (or rasslin) fan, so he didnt care, but those were the two biggest feuds, and they were rushed and given a quick burial.

The problem is that this "I create them" mentality has caused numerous performers not to get to heights they might otherwise have gotten to. When Ric came in '91, he didn't have to reinvent himself and did just fine. When Hulk came back in Dec of '83, he essentially ran with what his character he became in the AWA. Reinvention can be good but sometimes letting a performer use a gimmick that was successful elsewhere is a better strategy.
@seacbareid1985
@seacbareid1985 2 жыл бұрын
@@SB-jn8cw Youre right. Its helped some and has hurt others. Idk how far Dusty Rhodes would have went anyway, but the polka dots was kind of embarrassing and it was Dustins talent alone that made Golddust work..(I heard a rumour, Idk how true it is that at one point Vince wanted Dustin to get female breast implants and he considered it until someone talked him out of it) Skinner and the Red Rooster are two more perfect examples. Steve Keirn and Terry Taylor were amazing workers. But Vince isnt a fan of wrestling, hes a marketer. I think some he knew to leave alone, like youve mentioned Hogan and Flair, and Goldberg more recently.The Undertaker was a great idea and they found the perfect guy to portray it but can you imagine a world where Steve Austin was "Chilly McFreeze" instead of Stone Cold?

Lex had a stunning physique, but he had no zero personality. I think that's what hurts wrestling today. They are concerned with physiques, looks, and pushes. The Elizabeth/Savage/Hogan storylines, the showmanship of the Rock, even the papa Shango stuff was more entertaining than what is going on in today's WWE. My husband, God love him, would be great if he wasn't 5' 7" tall, and has terrible genetics and zero athletic ability. He wrestled independently in Toronto. He was a manager, and worked the crowd like a fiddle. The bumps were a lot for him to take because he most of the wrestlers outweighed him by almost a hundred pounds. It's a shame because he is a true showman.
@Scorch1028
@Scorch1028 2 жыл бұрын
The problem for Lex in the WWE is that he didn't adapt well to the Lex Express angle, where he had to travel the U.S. and connect with the fans. Lex wanted to travel by plane, at a time that the angle required him to ride around in that bus. Lex Luger would have had more longevity in the WWE if he'd have kept going with the Narcissist gimmick.

Vince primarily with the whole Lex Express was looking for the new Hulk Hogan. The big muscle super hero to take down the big evil powerful giants. Greg could be right about the timing although it seemed great in my perspective building up to SummerSlam but like previous reply in this thread mentioned, Lex wasn't on board with touring on the bus. Then again Lex himself did mention in a previous timeline shoot otherwise. Could be a hindsight answer from Luger but if not it's kind of hard to believe as there were more than just Greg himself that said he didn't like it and that it showed throughout the majority of his stops which def resonated negatively with wrestling fans coming to see him. Just wasn't his thing. Made an excellent heel in WWF but really overall to me watching him as a kid as well in WCW

@Goldenbane
@Goldenbane 2 жыл бұрын
There were a lot of problems for Lex. Bret was certainly one of them. The suddenness of his face turn was another. Up until slamming Yoko on the Intrepid, he'd been an unrepentant heel with zero hints of any kind of face turn. The Lex express wasn't a huge help either. For almost any other wrestler, I think it would have been a great idea...but you could kinda tell Lex wasn't really good with the fans and didn't really want to do this big thing. Hell, he started flying to the events and sleeping in hotel rooms instead of the bus...which is what the WWF was selling that he was doing. The last two things I felt hurt Lex the most were having him not take the belt from Yokozuna at Summerslam, and a catastrophic lack of credible heels for him to fight once his feud with Yoko was finished. So much potential was there, but it just didn't work at that time.

There's a video popped up recently where Steve Austin was interviewing Paul Roma, and Austin asked a similar question. They both felt it was on Luger and he had an inability to get over. I lean more towards what Greg is saying though. You look at who went to new York during that time, none of them were getting over. WWF was in a massive dip, and big muscular guys weren't getting over with the WWF fans due to the steroid trial, and a general apathy towards the Hogan/Warrior type. It's a shame, cos in truth Luger could work rings round those guys even then.

Luger was a better heel on the mic...As far as being a great worker, how many of the big muscled up guys could actually work? Hawk, Animal, Ultimate Warrior, Hogan, Nikita, Billy Graham, etc....not sure any of them were that great

@@pulsarlights2825 Compare Luger to the Rock or HHH who were big guys, even Hogan's best matches were better than Luger, and smaller guys who packed on a lot of muscle at certain points in their career like Benoit, Dynamite Kid, British bulldog were renowned workers off the top of my head.

@@pulsarlights2825 I will say you are definitely right he did show show promise as a heel on the mic but not all of it was his fault, a lot of it was on the bookers. Either being pushed before he was ready in WWF or not utilized correctly in WCW.

@@tri3183 This is all subjective, of course, but I never thought much of Hulk Hogan in the ring, I think his best match was in that Rocky movie..lol Benoit was great , as well as the Bulldog but they were smaller than Luger by a lot, right? I never really liked or watched the Rock, was more of a WCW fan then I out grew wrestling. HHH was decent, but seemed like a Ric Flair clone in way..Luger has a lot of haters out there, but I liked him, especially as an arrogant heel

Lex was better as a heel in WWF ("The Narcissist") than the stupid "Mr USA, Lex Express" gimmick.
@legionarybooks13
@legionarybooks13 2 жыл бұрын
Lex worked well in NWA / WCW, but felt completely vapid in WWF. The Narcissist gimmick was a flop, as there was already "The Model" Rick Martel, who actually had a personality! And the Lex Express was a pitiful joke that felt completely forced. His count-out win over Yokozuna was a huge "meh", that again felt forced with its over-the-top celebration. The audience left scratching its head because it meant nothing, since Yokozuna kept the title. Lex was definitely a better fit when he returned to WCW.

By the time Lex Luger arrived in WWE, Greg Valentine was an over the hill, "jobber-to-the-stars." Lex Luger was a much bigger star in both WWE and WCW than Valentine ever was. The reason that Luger didn't become the WWE World Champion is because he failed to "connect with the fans" during the whole Lex Express angle. Bruce Prichard said that Lex was asking to travel by "plane", at a time that the angle demanded that Luger needed to take the Lex Express bus everywhere. As a result of taking the bus, Lex's attitude soured, and he became more "distant" from the fans, which was the complete opposite of what WWE wanted him to do. Consequently, by early 1995 he was reserved to upper-mid card matches, and from there, the rest of his time in the WWE was uneventful. Lex was better off working for WCW.
