This guy is not only a great drummer/musician, he is a wonderful man! Also he is hilarious when he wants to be. Gregg made my 70th birthday very special! On December 1st, 2018 he was presenting a clinic at Cascio Interstate Music in New Berlin, WI ( Milwaukee area). He announced that it was my birthday and had me come up and play a little for him!!! A very memorable occasion!! This is a marvelous instructional video!! Thank you so much Gregg!!!

Geez.. I get caught up in my head and all I hear are people saying "you just gotta feel it"... Then this guy comes along. He's a friggin' brain surgeon on the drums. I can't even comprehend how fast his brain is piecing this stuff together, and yet it feels as natural and effortless as can be.
@Spladoinkal
@Spladoinkal Жыл бұрын
It's not his brain moving fast as much as him just listening and playing to a ridiculous number of songs from all kinds of genres. You develop patterns of how songs go and recognize "Oh this is this kinda song" then it's just a matter of getting the kicks. Even then, there's patterns for how the kicks work. While there's a lot of creativity that can be done in music, it still has to be set up in certain patterns to sound pleasing to the ear. In many cases, there are musicians that can shred but don't know how to properly structure a song to make proper sense and this unfortunately holds them back. I can typically pick up a worship song for church I've never heard before in like 1-2 listens with no issue just because of listening to a lot of music. Greg just takes this to a whole new level by being able to learn very complex parts quickly. All this to say this: Play A LOT of music from ALL genres. If you don't know how to play along with something, learn, there's youtube for that.

A lot of it comes from understanding song structure, etc. I was in a lot of live situations where I had songs thrown at me that I had never heard before. If you know even basic song structures and chord progressions you can at least make a decent stab at playing an unknown song.

I was in a rock band with a drummer that did this for every original song we came up with. I played bass at the time and had been in two previous bands but with this guy, I learned more about playing tight with the drummer and remembering what he played in each song. After two years and thousands of band practice hours together, I felt I was a much better musician having that experience.

Quick story about Greg: The first drum clinic I attended was around 1988 (when I was 14ish), and it was Greg at the Cotati Caberet in Cotati, CA (hosted by the drum shop at Zone Music). During the clinic, one of the drum teachers presented Greg with the chart/sheet music for a drum solo that the teacher had written. Greg was unprepared for the solo as he didn't have a copy before the clinic, but he proceeded to play the drum solo for the first time while reading along to the sheet music. It was totally amazing, and the drum teacher was grinning from ear-to-ear because of how ridiculously accurate Greg's interpretation was. At the end of the drum clinic, Greg came out from behind his kit and did a bunch of drum corps inspired snare work. It was nuts. Great memory! This Drumeo video further demonstrates that Greg is a master level musician, and a really great guy!

I had the fortune to record an album, with Greg putting on a couple of drum tracks. This is how he works. After a 2 listens and him taking notes, he recorded a track. In my mind perfect, missed no hits, perfect with the backing track, added that extra spice that made the track come alive, Groove. After this first take his comment was “how was that other than I should play it better”. No Greg, that take was it. First takes often are the best as It is fresh. Second take magic, how do you choose, you can’t. Had the fortune to tour with him, 5 dates. What a lovely special guy, wicked sense of humour.

Great, talented drummer. I learned of Greg's drumming from David Lee Roth's solo album with the songs "Yankee Rose", and "Shyboy" among others. "Shyboy" in particular because of the drum fill that begins that song and then the pretty quick double bass pattern that kicks in afterward and holds throughout the song. Very talented musician/drummer who is very well-rounded, with adept ability in many genres.

His understanding of song form, music theory and improvisational skills allows him to quickly assimilate into any situation. Time is the big factor. Alot of guys could arrive at close to the same product. But can you do it quick and on the fly in minimal takes? THAT'S why they get those gigs. Studio pros can do it all in a short time. That saves money. The singer and the guitarist can get tons of overdubs if the drums nail it in two takes. I've worked on the periphery of a few of these demo sessions and these guys always amaze me.

That final product was amazing and had me bopping my head throughout that whole performance. If I were to also give a suggestion: don't just study the music, study the people who you're working with. This includes band mates, producers, record labels, targeted audience, etc. You want the music to be enjoyable for everyone (including yourself). That way you can better narrow down what's needed in the song and work with what you have.

Ok but like I tell my drummer all the time, drums are the easiest to jam with. As long as you have good time and technique you can play over anything with out hearing the song first. The rest of the band needs to write down chords, melody lines, lyrics, any key changes. So much more to manage. Also there's not a whole lot of notes or possible sounds on the drums compared to a piano or guitar. You've got your kick snare and hi hat with it's nuances of sounds as home, the toms for fills and ending phrases, and the cymbals for flavor or starting phrases with a crash. Thats it. After that its just knowing if you're on a verse, chorus, bridge, breakdown and knowing what energy each section needs. I don't care how fast you are at playing by ear you can't keep up with a drummer when jamming a song never listened to before. It's just not a fair challenge.

@@morbidmanmusic Calm down. It's a compliment and when someone makes a broad statement, it's meant to be broad. If you got 100 drummers in a room, you for sure would find almost none that could do this. If you got a million drummers in a room, for sure you could. But that's the point of my comment. It's rare to find this level of expertise. I'm a drummer, and know most of the drummers from my area. I've seen a wide range of musicians and their talent.

@@morbidmanmusicthere are great drummers out there that may have better speed, foot work or just more popular in general; Eloy, Garstka, Chad Smith, Portnoy or Grohl. But popular doesn’t make you skilled. Portnoy, Chad or Grohl with their popularity couldn’t pull this off. I have seen ppl say Grohl is a session drummer. Hahahaha. He’s a drummer hired to do albums that has material to take home and listen to. Gregg said, “I dont get to take these charts home and study them.” What he does takes years of studying and first hand application. So yes there are many that can do it. But not a lot of the guys that some ppl claim can just cause they like them. I have been in the studio with Gregg many times. This is old hat to him. That’s why gets call backs.

One question, how many non-drumming musicians (myself included) watched this entire video in awe? It’s amazing to watch his process.

One of those "my uncle's best friend" stories - he *actually* went to high school with my uncle in Warren/Detroit, Michigan! When Gregg was touring with DLR on "Skyscraper" in the early 90s, my uncle managed to hook up with him before a concert. My 10-year-old mind was blown that one of my rock star idols was IN MY HOUSE and just hanging out lol. Good to see he's still going strong with Ringo Starr all these years later.

what an arsenal of chops. i never heard anything from this guy besides the DLR era. no wonder Dave picked him, dude is solid as hell. probably coulda pulled off a Zappa gig in the right era, or at least had been a contender.

This is the second time this great lesson has been uploaded and I have listened and will Comment again. Gregg is a fantastic drummer and seems like a great person. And how much fun would it be to to grab a beer or two (or a coffee if he does not imbibe) with Gregg and talk about his vast experiences with drums. BTW I have mentioned this to Dave A. that among my many shortcomings in drums the topic of this lesson is what I am weakest at. I can read simple charts and the charts for looped practice things but not complex charts. Would love it if Drumeo would make a say 13 week course starting at the simple basics. I would pay an honest fee for this course. Thanks Gregg and Drumeo. Great stuff.

Mr. Bissonette is one of the most underrated and underappreciated drummers and musicians that I can think of. It is truly sad. As others have pointed out, he is known to be a beautiful human being, as well.
