La La wasn’t sure if she did well or not. She didn’t want to watch the tape after the show. But when she finally did, she asked me, “That wasn’t too bad, was it?” I said “La La! Listen to the audience reaction. They went wild!”. She is still very humble. I cherish our friendship. 🙂

I know I already left a comment, but I had to come back and watch this again 5 minutes later. There is magic in this performance that is seldom seen anywhere at any time. This was an event, a moment in time that was captured on film. This is America in all its glory, with Ms. LaLa Brooks of the Crystals as our singing Statue of Liberty. This brought the house town, and a few tears to my eyes.

Remarkable how many musicians are required to even attempt to replicate the "wall of sound." But what a treat to see a genuinely live performance, with musicians even actually reading musical scores to perform their parts correctly.

This was One of the last greatest performances by a 60's group that David made extra effort to even include the violin section just for that complete sound of the actual song track. Just BEAUTIFUL. Thank you David Letterman for making that extra effort. What a Sound.

I agree Cisco. If strings are part of the original production and not included in the live performance the sound has a big hole in it for me. They're not subtle, you know it when they're not there (and suppose to be). Good for Dave, too often the late night live performances come unfortunately with "no strings attached." Thankfully, Dave said let's pay these ladies.

Yes, this video is terrific. From what someone told me, it is regarded as one of the 10 best musical performances ever televised on Dave Letterman. La La is a personal friend of mine. She was so honored to be selected to do this for Dave during his last few months on TV. There is sort of a funny story "behind the scenes" that goes with this presentation, so if you email me Ralph, I will share it with you. thomas.larkin2@gmail.com

In the early 1980’s I was trying to find this song and DaDoo Run Run on vinyl. I saw a name associated with Phil Spector. I wrote a note and received a reply that if ok he would send a cassette. They did with a card with thank you in multiple languages with Phil’s signature.

1963 this 9 year olds bought the 45’s of these songs. They were the first records I would play over and over. 1982 I moved bank to Chicago and a couple blocks was Nicks bar. I was not much of a drinker but they had a great juke box with these two songs. I tried to find them at the record store but could not. I saw a reference to Phil Spector in the back of a Rolling Stone with the name Danny Davis and an address. I wrote explaining my dilemma. He wrote back, he spoke to Phil , and if acceptable Phil would send me a cassette with the two songs. I replied yes, received the cassette with a card that had thank you in many languages printed and Phil’s signature across one side of the card. I saw La La several years ago at the Ponderosa Music Festival in New Orleans. Love these two songs and that time in music as much today as a 69 year old..

@eoghempen80128 жыл бұрын
look at any performance by Darlene Love of "Christmas, Baby Please Come Home" another Wrecking Crew, Spector, Barry/Greewich product, and you will find a better performance. Also, on Da Doo Ron Ron, The orininal vinyl record, Darlene was lead vocalist, others, too. For example, 'He's a Rebel". Maybe "And Then He Kissed Me" too. They were not even in town when some were recorded. Crazy Phil really screwed Darlene over.
@solarisartists87978 жыл бұрын
Darlene was not the original vocalist on Da Doo Ron Ron or Then He Kissed Me. This is settled history. You can love Darlene without hating on La La. Both have excellent bodies of work.
@TheRoland19477 жыл бұрын
Darlene Love has given various accounts of her side of the story, telling Katie Couric that she sang lead on "Da Doo Ron Ron," but backing off that claim in later interviews, saying that her lead vocals were wiped out and replaced by Crystals lead singer Dolores "La La" Brooks in retaliation by Spector when she asked him for an artist's contract. When the movie 20 Feet From Stardom - which featured Love - was released in 2013, The New York Times ran a story about the film that claimed Love sang lead on the song. Two weeks later, they ran a correction, stating: "While she did sing, it was as backup, not as the lead." Rachelle Spector tells La La Brooks and Art Cohen that she was flying back to California on August 28, 2012; and that she would explain the situation to Phil Spector. Rachelle Spector flies back to California for her allowed once a month visit on that date, and Rachelle explains to Phil what Darlene Love is saying. Phil Spector tells his wife that Darlene Love did not record a track of DDRR; that Darlene Love never sang background; and that Darlene Love was never a Crystal. Phil told Rachelle that he thought Darlene Love's voice was too mature and gospely for DDRR and never considered Darlene at all for the song. Rachelle called La La Brooks that day and told her what she found out from Phil Spector.Here are 2 versions of what happened. Given Phil's history of having Crystals getting credit for songs the Bossums actually sang. I'm leaning towards Darlene's version. 1 thing is for sure, they both do incredible performances.

WOW STILL HAS AMAZING VOICE ITALIANS LOVE BLACK MUSIC ESPECIALLY EARLY 1960S MAKES U SO HAPPY AND ENERGETIC
The funny thing about this is that La La thought they were just practicing for the show ... she didn't realize that they were doing the actual recording for the show! She said she is glad that she was clueless, because she was not looking forward to doing the real thing because she was afraid she would get nervous. She had not done a lot of TV in recent years. When they told her that she had just done the actual taping, she was relieved!!
