Finally, I have found out the usage of arrestor. Arrestors are used mostly in two-line systems where explosive gases are involved because if the pressure in one tank drops for an unknown reason, the gas pressure in the other tank may push the flame into the faulty tank, causing an explosion. For silver soldering with single air-driven acetylene tanks, arrestors are not necessary because the tank pressure will never drop below atmospheric pressure.

I am addicted to your videos! I want to know if you have been using a flashback arrestor on your acetylene tank? I know it is a must for oxygen-acetylene setups, but I don't know if it is necessary for air-acetylene rigs. Please let us know your thoughts. Happy new year!

Hello windsurfer, Glad you like my videos!! Great question. I have not used a flashback arrestor on my B tank. I use a vintage Prest-o- Lite torch and have had no problems. I have had this torch since 1975! Oh my gosh! When I got it, there was no recommendation for the flashback arrestor. Since then in recent years, I checked with my local welding supplier to see if there was an update. They said that it was not necessary for the B tank. It is smaller and has less pressure. I would check with you local suppliers to see if there any regs in your area that would require one. I have seen them on B tanks, so I know they are available. I don't know which one would be correct for that tank. Thanks again for your great questions. Have a great new year too. Greg Greenwood

Happy New Year Greg!! I live in the UK (I am a Yank) and have been trying to find an air/acetylene torch. The only torches of this type I can find (Amazon) come from the US. I found a Victor torch and an Arc Union torch. I am familiar with the Victor brand but not the Arc Union. Are you familiar with Arc Union? This torch is about a third of the price of the Victor. I am finding it frustrating to locate some supplies for soldering and metal work here. So much of what I do find comes from the Good Ol USA. Odd that. Love your videos!! Sooo informative!! Please keep them coming.

Hello Bill, I can understand your frustration. I am familiar with Victor torches, but I have had no experience with Arc Union. The reviews on the Arc Unions are mixed. Hummm? Some of my viewers have been using Cooksongold in the UK. But, they do not seem to have a wide variety of torches. I know that Amazon has a distribution from UK, so that would help in the shipping costs. Now, what torch should you purchase? Remember, you will be using this torch every day and you must rely on it to do the best job for you. You don't want to worry if it is going to last. I would recommend that you get the best quality torch that you can afford. This is one area that you don't want to cut corners. Which is hotter, propane or butane? And which one do you prefer?

Hello Lauren, They both burn about the same temperature. Propane is a little bit hotter but not much. 19768 Btu. Butane : 19494 Btu. If you are just starting out in jewelry making and on a budget, you can get a butane torch at a reasonable price. These torches are somewhat limited to the size of metal you are trying to solder. But do a good job, are easy to find and have good flexible tips. Propane torches can range from simple plumber's torches with limited tips, to larger tank propane torches with multiple tips and can use oxygen or air in combination with the propane. If you are thinking long term and want to get into jewelry making, then look at the more expensive propane torches. I use for my everyday soldering an acetylene and air mix torch. It is hot enough to melt and cast metal, but with small tips, I can solder fine wires. I hope this has helped you. Good Luck. Keep watching. Greg Greenwood

Hello Elroy, Flux can be rehydrated with a little water. Just add a small amount of water and stir it to a nice creamy consistency. I like to use "Handy Flux" . You can get it at "Rio Grande" jewelry supply. A one pound jar is plenty and will last a long time. Check out my videos "Silver Soldering Hidden Details". Hello Nelson, Welcome to my channel. Very nice to have you here. Unfortunately, you cannot use a heat gun for soldering silver solder. The temperatures are too high. Hello Mulan, Yes you can solder a pin backing onto the coin. You can either use low temperature solder or silver solder. Make sure you test it and practice on a spare coin before you attach to your final coin. Greg Greenwood
