I hear they are going to redesign the Ecosport. I at first ignored it because the 6-spd transmission would not go into flat-four dinghy towing mode, but Gregg you have managed to work around that issue in a very ingenious way. We enjoy jeep travel, but the discomfort issue is very real and for the most part, we just enjoy USFS roads that are very inevitable with an Ecosport type vehicle. If you give me a knobby tire option I think I can make it work. If I was very paranoid about length, no moose bumper, no drom box, and a Volvo 670 size chassis would certainly make this plan even better. Now to calculate the size of 5W needed to stay under 65 feet. Our biggest FW has been 35' in the past so we have no need for a 53' monster even though we enjoy those videos too, LOL.

As you know, we had our truck lengthened locally and a box added to carry our 4-Door Jeep Wrangler on a 2015 Volvo VNL730. When the Jeep is unloaded, the box can be used as a dormitory for grandkids and a workshop or workout area during inclement weather. We even used it as our kitchen during our three-week stay in Quartzsite this year as we didn't have a RV trailer. And of course, the truck is much longer (still tandem). It's 40 feet deer-guard/bumper to rear-ramp and 282" wheelbase. Thankfully, Volvo trucks have a 55 degree wheel cut that makes the length not as much an issue as it could be. A bonus that we haven't availed ourselves of (yet) is the box can serve as a mounting place for many solar panels. The link herein is to a KZbin video Jim Stockman of Suite Travels did on last June's West Coast HDT Rally that featured a tour of our truck: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX2coqmPaaegqqc Fast forward to 14.30 minutes into the video where the interview with me begins. Most anything is possible if you want to do it. Using experienced and expert engineering and a good shop should bring a good idea to fruition.

Earlier today I watched his video comparing 4 hauler lengths, decked/deckless/etc. And I left a comment that if I ever go HDT RVing, it will probably be as a straight truck, enclosed, using the roof for solar, and the inside much as you did. I also said I'd add some side openings, either like a beverage truck (rollup side sections) or flip-up sides to extend the size of solar when parked. Could screen the sides when open like that, too. Pulling a huge trailer just isn't as appealing to me as basically making it a car-hauling, toy-hauling truck/RV with a lot of space once the car is driven off.

Thanks Gregg. Great job. Exactly what I was looking for. The thing about having a Jeep is it can be your toy and ride instead of a Side by side taking up room in a toy Hauler which allows for a larger living 5th wheel.

Hi Dirk. I completely agree - by putting the toys on the RVHauler we maximize the living space in the 5th wheel, and we also keep our costs down! We have more slides, more windows, more elbow room to live and relax. The toy haulers are a bit more expensive too. Great points Dirk, and thanks for your excellent comment. Gregg

I only recently found your channel, and I'm amazed at what you can do with these trucks. I'm still in the daydreaming phase, but hypothetically could you create a bed long enough for a 16.5 ft sports car and a motorcycle in front of it. Cab size would not necessarily need to be a sleeper, but second row seating would be nice. The potential rv would be the DRV mobile suites Houston 44. 24000 grvw. the sports car is 3800, and the motorcycle is just under 500. I recently saw a video with an RV hauler that had a grey/black tank built into the left rear corner (60 gal I believe) and a fresh water tank built in the gap between the frame rails. Don’t recall the size. The idea is to pump the grey/black tanks from the RV into this Hauler tank for transport to a dump site. And, to have additional fresh water if boon-docking. Electric pumps and dumps would have to be arranged for both.

@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks so much for the excellent question. Good eye! Actually this particular RVHauler isn't quite all the way "LONG". Ie in the original axle position. This rear axle was moved exactly 8 inches forward to give us the ideal blend and combination of proper weight distribution on the forward and rear axles, ideal storage, and maneuverability. I think after all the engineering and agonizing over the little details, we also created a visually balanced axle placement as well. When the Jeep (or Honda ATV) is up there, it looks good too! I am glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for taking the time to share your great question, Gregg

So the question is how you make them lower can you explain or show .. Thanks You are a big help to me on what I need and want
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi EAGLE EYE Jack! Yes we did build this bed a bit lower. We were able to do so because we put the ramp storage UNDER the frame instead of storing them on-top of the frame. Honestly, with our arched ramps, those couple inches aren't a big factor. Here is the magic number you are looking for - try to keep your bed height at 51 inches or lower above ground. Smarties still load without rubbing, and all the others loading from the back are happy too. Keep the great questions coming Jack. Ggg

Good video 😃 can you legally sell truck in California or the US since your business is in Canada 🤔
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Stephen, YES over 92% of our sales over the past 12 years have been to our US clients. There are NO duties or taxes at the border when these trucks head south. They are all originally manufactured in the USA, and all meet US EPA and safety standards. Also note that when our RVHaulers leave our dealership, they are already titled as MOTORHOMES. You purchasing an out-of-state motorhome. This is no longer a commercial truck! The title reads motorhome everywhere, and also states "passenger use". One note: California is the one state which is now a challenge to title an RVHauler. We have heard of folks recently having success, but there are some rules in California which are not condusve. Thanks for the great question, and thanks for watching my video! Gregg

what about a day cab rv hauler? it might increase maneuverability and decrease length
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh, now you are thinking Tyler! Interesting fact - as a licensed dealership YES I CAN actually title a day cab as a motorhome (even without all the fridge, microwave, sleeping system, shore power etc). When a day-cab leaves my dealership, every unit is titled as a motorhome from day one. The title doesn't say "truck" anywhere. It even says "passenger use". Soooooo, when you get the rig home, you have just purchased an out-of-state or out-of-province motorhome. You aren't having to change it from a commercial truck title to a motorhome yourself. I did it for you. Makes it quite a bit simpler when you get it home. YES - it will be around 6-8 feet shorter (depending on the sleeper you were comparing too initially). Gregg

I have an odd question what is the roof height of the eco sport when loaded on the deck. I’d also like to know what people are putting in all this outside storage
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers Жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, Some numbers for you - the height of the deck / bed surface is 51" above ground. Then, we add the overall height of the Eco Sport which is 65.1 inches. The total height is 51+65.1 = 116.1 inches. Regarding the outside storage: We find that most of our clients like to put the HEAVY HEAVY contents that they might carry in their 5th wheel into these storage boxes. They are powder-coated steel, and can accommodate the weight, and the contents can bang around a bit and not do damage. Plus the RVHauler can take the weight! Quite a few of my clients are full-timing Rvers (they have sold their sticks-and-bricks) and travel full-time with all their worldly-possessions. Gregg

I've been watching your channel now for a few weeks and have learnt a ton. I'm in the UK, but considering retiring in the US. I am curious as to why people would need such a big sleeper cab if the intent for the hauler is to, haul an RV? When it's time to park up for the night before reaching ones final destination, why not just sleep in the RV? Is it possible to have a tractor, with the smallest sleeper, carry a car like the jeep and still have a 53' RV like a Spacecraft and still be at the 65' limit? Cheers.
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 7 ай бұрын
Hello Hello! Thanks for the great question. There are two primary reasons we have the sleepers. 1. It allows us to title and register these RVHaulers as motorhomes. They are no longer commercial working trucks, and we have far less expensive insurance, and operating costs. 2. Many of my clients appreciate that the RVHauler is a mini motorhome itself! Yes, they setup their 5th wheel RV in a new 'home-base" location, and then will sometimes take the RVHauler on day or multi-day trips from that location. Regarding length - we cannot meet your length wishes. Let's put together just two measurements to see our challenge. 53 foot Spacecraft plus a 14.5 foot Jeep is already 67 feet. We haven't yet added the RVHauler hood and seating area length, nor the hitch space. If you want a long RV, you will be well over 65 feet long. Keep the great questions coming! Gregg
@theasiamtmgroup
@theasiamtmgroup 7 ай бұрын
Thanks Gregg. Yes makes sense. So if I want a 53’ RV with a motorhome registered RV hauler, I’d need a sleeper, and if I want a car too, the car would basically need to go inside the RV. I’ve seen Spacecraft make one like that. Great channel.
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 7 ай бұрын
Small clarification - there is no need to put the car in the RV. Instead let us build a bed behind the sleeper, and allow you to maximize your living space in the RV. Instead of losing the full length slides, and creating that garage, make that WHOLE space living space to enjoy. Toys on the RVHauler! 99% of your time is spent living, in the RV. (not travelling from one place to another). Maximize your living space. Just a thought, Gregg

When I built my bed I was told in no uncertain terms that having the hitch pin more than 5 feet behind the center of the rear axle would cause sway in the trailer. I’m this video your hitch is clearly a good 7-9 feet behind that rear axle. Can you speak to this concern, and why you are not worried with this build? Thank you very much!
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers Жыл бұрын
Hello Chap. Thanks so much for the excellent question. Engineers confirmation and consultation, along with first-hand experience have shown us that there is no sway. The RVHauler weighs in the range of 25,000lbs. The RVHauler is stable, and doesn't introduce any trailer movement. Nor can the trailer affect the RVHauler! The tail can't wag the dog. Does backing up vehicles with engine hood help shorten overall length?
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Dan. I don't quite understand your question. Do you mean loading it up and strapping it down at an angle? Instead of on a flat-deck surface? I have personally seen a number of these, and noted designs, and how they are used. Note that you will need to setup and take-down a few hundred pounds of supports and ramps at each load and unload. I know a couple that load a Suzuki in exactly the manner you have described. They are quite practiced, and take approximately 1.0 hour in total to load. The unload is 35 minutes. Perhaps you (or others) are faster. There is quite a structure that needs to be engineered. The structure of winch, ramps and supports has to be quite substantial, so the weights are quite high. I would also note that the length “savings” is not that much. I am going to use the numbers of a shorter Jeep. It saves us a few inches. Loading a 118” long vehicle at 43 degrees results in a deck “used” space of 87”. Let's do some math, and meet my friend Pythagoras who first wrote this equation. We shorten our load length by 31”. To load a 12 foot long vehicle into a 6 foot long space (what the Smartie occupies) you almost have to load the 12 foot vehicle close to vertical. We can also run out of height pretty quick as the max overall vehicle height is 13 feet 6 inches. I have 7 feet of vertical height to work with between the deck height and the 13'6" height. That is why some folks lean towards the Smart Car. In this situation, the overall rig is shorter by 5 feet . Plus, we can load and unload in a fraction of the time even when the 5th wheel is still attached. Additionally, we have a shorter bed and simpler bed, lowering our costs quite a bit. BUT not everyone is excited with the Smart Car idea!!! Of course, the Smart car only has two seats, and is NOT alot of fun to drive off-road like a Jeep or Mini Cooper. I would have some other ideas to pass by you. The cost of adding the angled system would be somewhat expensive. My last estimate was it added $20,000 to the RVHauler build price. BUT, there are some other ideas. Flat-load the Mini Cooper, Fiat or Jeep on a flat-deck. Save those "angled system" costs. OR, just accept that we are going to be a generally long rig, and accept it, and load your Mini, and have fun! Make it a system that takes 7 minutes to off load your Mini, not 35 minutes. I hope I am helping with some ideas, and I hope I have helped answer your questions. Keep the questions coming! Gregg

@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anchored in Muscle! When we move that axle back any more, and then place a Jeep on the bed, most of the Jeep weight gets transferred to the front axle. It overloads the front axle capacity and the tire capacity. We have to carefully place the rear axle under the load (in this case the Jeep) so that we stay within safe engineering specifications. Also, when we have the rear axle alllllll the way back towards the tail, the RVHauler isn't all that nimble with that long wheelbase. We want to stay reasonably maneuverable and completely safe in our design. Thanks for the great question, Gregg

If I ever wanted a custom hauler, would I need to supply you with the truck, or could you find me a truck? I really do not like the fact that there are too many trucks out there with so many issues due to all the emissions crap they put on these trucks; it’s hard to determine which, out of many brands, are the most reliable. I know these semi trucks are built for mileage, but i found that reliability is my biggest concern.

When the Jeep is not on the Bed but you have the 5th wheel attached is there a risk of shifting too much weight off of the front truck suspension?
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. Thanks for taking the time to share your excellent question! I have some real-life weights to share with you. For testing, I connected my own personal 5th wheel RV which has a downward pin box weight of 6000 lbs on the back of this RVHauler It off-loaded a grand total of 730 lbs off of the front axle. The front axle normally has 10,925 lbs pushing down! I reduced the front load to 10,195 lbs. Those front tires aren't off loaded much at all. There is still 5 tons pressing downward on the front axle. The front axle is rated to support up to 12,500 lbs. You may notice in the video the weight of the Jeep is mostly centered over the REAR axle, not on the front axle. Of course the front end of the Jeep is heavier by a few hundred pounds. Again, I tested each scenario (Jeep on and Jeep off). When the Jeep was off, with the 5th wheel trailer attached, we reduced the front axle weight by 475 lbs. In these two loading options, we reduced the front axle load by 4% to a max of 6%. I hope that makes sense. Thanks, Gregg

@@rvhaulers thanks for the reply Gregg. I assume those weight differences wouldn’t affect the trucks steering or handling?

Howdy Bookie, I am challenged to make you budget come to life - sorry. A quality candidate rig that is safe, reliable, has longevity and still has performance capabilities is going to use up a fair bit of your budget on its own. Then, we have to convert it, and customize it. If you would like a more detailed breakdown of pricing, you are always welcome to give me a call personally. Also, if you want, you can see some sample pricing at our website here of some past builds. It gives you a good idea of the range of pricing possible. www.rvhaulers.ca/inventory/ Gregg

Hi Kevin! Hey! That is our own (new to us) Jeep. My wife and I are looking forward to taking that along on our own RVHauler excursions and adventures this summer. You make a good point. I should take a winch along so I can pull it up on the bed (like my own tow-truck recovery) when I break something on the Jeep. Thanks for helping me plan ahead! Ggg

Instead of a sleeper can you make a crew cab
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerome. Sadly I can't modify those sleepers to make a crew cab. Sorry. Everything we do here at RVHaulers conforms to DOT approved safety and standards. When I cut into the ROPS (roll over protection system) built into these sleepers to put in doors, I will compromise the safety structural integrity of the sleeper. DOT and my own safety concerns won't let me do that. But thanks for the question! Gregg
