My great grandfather use go by the moon on cutting weeds in his pasture. He always said you cut your weeds on the down side of the moon. I never really paid a lot of mind to it until about 10 years ago and I tried it and it works. I had a lot of Canadian thistle in my pasture and after I cut it it didn’t grow back and the next t year there was hardly anything

I like using the shoulder harness with the "weed wackers", along with the wide handles that you are using
@pronoia. Жыл бұрын
Sometimes I use a blunt blade on the brush cutter or slasher for woody weeds. It breaks and splinters the stems and stops them from growing back. Was dealing with sicklepod in Australia.
@geralddunn26543 жыл бұрын
have the weed eater and it is assume but you do need to be careful using it. I just get hot and have to watch where I'm weed eating and where I'm stepping and trying to not trip on the tall grass. please keep up the good shows and I did get my 11 ewes and one ram last Sunday and all is well so far using my electric fence and step in post. watch the heat and stay hydrated

We use the exact same Stihl brush cutter in our electric fence and the same chain saw. We also use the extended limb saw for overhead limbs. Keeps things clean and neat for sure.
@rawa54573 жыл бұрын
I recommend a scythe blade with 40 widia teeth. Similar to a circular saw. You have to be careful with the stones, but the bushes and small trees are cut down effortlessly. It also saves the engine. It works lightly even in a heavy brush. The machine does not feel it is running.

Totally agree with your choice of machines. I've got both the chainy and the weed whacker (whipper snipper in Australia). Both are beasts. I'd recommend tungsten chains for any chainsaw though. The second you touch dirt with a regular chain, it basically goes blunt. My tungsten chains last and last and I'm generally having to chop logs on the ground so almost always cop the soil even just a tiny bit. Great advice on painting the trees. Have you tried injecting them instead? That apparently kills out the roots too which would otherwise sprout some distance away. I'll be trying that this year. Love this mixed content Greg, thank you for sharing, much appreciated.
@davemi003 жыл бұрын
Painting the Stumps and Cut Roots works very well, even on those poplars and Aspen trees that spread by root Sprouts. I treated some Root Sprouts and ended up killing a half dozen Connected Sprout Trees a 100ft away.

@@davemi00 Wow, 100ft away. Well I'll certainly try that method then. Thank you 🙏

Can you share more about the water valve you are using in the troughs. I'm using a pressure regulated fill valve but I'm ready to move to a float type valve. Thanks

@@gregjudyregenerativerancher Thank you! I really enjoy watching your videos. You explained one of the most important facts about growing and grazing grass several years ago. Equipment and iron doesn't pay the bills on a cattle farm, grazing does.

I know you hate swales, Greg, but adding a small swale above that pond and around the side of that hill will direct more rainfall into your pond, effectively increasing your pond's catchment area.
@Digger9273 жыл бұрын
I'd call it a proper terrace, the "swales" were just narrow, rough berms. A proper terrace that's smooth and well sloped to direct water could be super beneficial. But he's got water, that pond is fine as it is...adding a terrace isn't a super efficient use of money in that circumstance.
@userjeffe3 жыл бұрын
@@Digger927 yes, this will increase the moisture in the lake about ten fold.

Why does Greg hate swales or why do grazers hate swales? I have them on my farm but they were here when I got here so I don't know any differently.

Have you ever considered putting solar powered aerators in your ponds?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher3 жыл бұрын
No, but it would add more oxygen to the water which would be a good thing for the livestock.
@kevinfarr97393 жыл бұрын
@@gregjudyregenerativerancher Yes, I think it could greatly increase the water quality for your cattle (and fish) and may even extend the life of your pond.
