Selecting a rifle scope can be challenging. When I was choosing a new scope for my moose and bison rifle, a Gunwerks NEXUS in 300 PRC, I had a lot of great scopes to choose from. The Vortex Optics Razor HD LHT 4.5-22x50 FFP has been a fantastic scope on my 7 mm SAUM and 300 WM, but I was ready to try something a little different. In the end, I selected the Vortex Optics Razor HD Gen III 6-36x56 FFP.

Every scope a person could consider for hunting must be durable and weatherproof. The Gen III has a fantastic build quality and will put up with whatever punishment I could inflict on it without myself being killed or my rifle destroyed.
While this scope’s magnification is a bit higher than a moose or bison hunter needs, I am comfortable taking longer shots because I have the scope on the very capable NEXUS rifle, and I trained at Gunwerk’s Long Range University. Additionally, the big bull bison I love hunting can be extremely difficult to stalk due to their aversion to snowmobile noise and preference for feeding on hillsides and hilltops.
The 56 mm objective lens brings in phenomenal light, making early morning and evening hunting much more practical than with a lighter scope with a smaller objective lens. This feature is invaluable when hunting moose, as most good hunting takes place before the sun rises or after it sets.

More than an ultimate guide to choose a rifle scope this is an advert. For durability, reliability and glass quality in any regard I would choose Schmidt & Bender, TT, Minox ZP5 or ZCO over Vortex all day long.

A lower magnification of 6x is not ideal for hunting. Depending on its purpose 2 to 3.5 on the lower end is much to be prefered - 4.5 at the most. An upper magnification of 10 or 12 is totaly adequate for most purposes, 15 or 18 is probably all you will need. If you don't know enough about scope specs for hunting, you probably won't be anywhere near the skill level that it takes to justify such a scope. If you have young eyes, take a 50mm objective over 56 all day or even a 42 when you hunt in the mountains or use NVs or thermals. A 56mm objective is total overkill for a backcountry rifle system.
