So the ramp fee story...goes like this. I have been into Atlantic Midway several times in the past. I have always done so to pick up or drop-off a family member. In doing so, they charge me a "Drop off" fee which is less than the normal "Ramp Fee". On this day, I was picking up my son who was waiting for me in the FBO. I went to the counter to pay my fee. She handed me the $345 fee. I said, no you need to charge me the drop off fee. To which she responded that I wasn't dropping somebody off, I was picking somebody up. I asked her to tell me the difference...either way, I taxi in, I park, I get out of the plane, I go to the counter and pay the bill and then I leave. She acknowledged that there was no difference but that it was again a drop-off fee not a pick up fee. I asked her to call her manager. She picked up the phone and talked to somebody-or acted like she was. She hung it up and said she couldn't do anything about it. I argued my point some more and finally surrendered and left. Two days later, the manager Mike called me. We went through the whole scenario again and he regurgitated what the lady behind the counter told me. I asked him to explain to me the difference between a drop off and a pick up that neccesitated the higher charge. Not surprisingly, he couldn't explain the difference but assured me that he looked into it and I was charged the correct price.

With a drop off your passenger gets out of the airplane, walks thru the FBO, gets into his ride, and is wheels up in a matter of seconds. With the pick up while your passenger is waiting there is time to use the facilities, drink some of that free stale, burned coffee, eat some of those yummie stale free cookies, maybe grab a bag of that special soggy FBO popcorn, and then set a spell on those very special FBO couches. You don't expect Atlantic to be giving that stuff away now do you? Oh....wait a minute...I suppose a drop off passenger could use the facilities and eat the food while waiting for his ride to show up. Never mind. Anyway nice grease job and thanks for the ride. Check six.

It's not a "greaser" until you have to call tower/ground to confirm you are on the ground! Auto spoilers is the way I usually knew there is weight on the wheels. Of course, that assumes I remembered to lower the gear... You will know that you forgot the gear because it will take MAX power to taxi clear of the runway.

One of my first flights was from Elstree, just North of London to San Sebastian in Spain to refuel before flying down to the Mediterranean. We were flying in a Piper T-tail Arrow P-28. There was quite a lot of cumulus around us and we were flying without auto pilot in between the clouds. All of a sudden my head hit the ceiling and we dropped 30-50 feet. It was like being hit on the head by the top of the plane and bounced around like in a washing machine. It was so sudden and lasted only about 2 seconds. I have not experienced anything like it since but it taught me a great lesson of respect for the weather. My pilot also hit the roof of the plane and lost control although, also, only for a couple of seconds. I often reflect back at how lucky I was to be shown what weather can do even though it was a somewhat sunny day. You nailed the landing.

Greg. that little informational on how to steer an aircraft on the ground...that was great as I found that out a long time ago when a friend bought me a discovery flight for a local flight school. An instructor and I got into a Cessna 152 for the flight up here in Delta BC Canada, Boundary Bay Airport (CZBB). The instructor prior to this briefed me in the classroom what would be happening and once in the aircraft, He had me in the left seat, I started it, we ran thru the checklists, he had ME taxi the thing to the runway and that's when the foot controls really showed what they all did. He then let me do the entire take off procedure and flight other than the landing...that was probably one of the best days I've ever had. That was about 18 years ago, maybe it might be a good idea to pursue a private pilots license cause that flight so long ago was extremely fun!

Love the content. From a former manager: There's a lot that goes into ramp charges. Larger airports charge FBOs massive MAGs for leaseholds to do business at the hub. On top of that, users expect amenities (that are available whether you use them or not) and coffee and newspapers are really expensive. Equipment (tugs, GPUs, Lektros, fuel trucks) cost millions of dollars for a FBO that size. Oh yea, and the people that are paid pennies to service multi million dollar aircraft. Margins are super slim and it is the cost of doing business...

Greg, I managed a major FBO and we had to implement similar ramp fees or min fuel purchases for just pickups and drop offs. The problem is that other FBOs that had no facilities and overhead would sell jet fuel at a significantly lower price. Charter flights would position there and load on fuel. Then they would taxi to our facility to board their passengers in our beautiful facility. Same in reverse. So we provided all the customer services, parking, catering, coffee ($10,000/year in free coffee) cars, crew rest and shower rooms, conference room, etc., and got no rev from any fuel sale. Pilots would say they would only be on the ramp for 30 min and that turned into 2-4 hours. I suspect it was for the same reason.

@Premier 1 Driver Greg, my reasoning for wanting to meet you revolves around my writings. I am a private pilot but never got beyond for several reasons, although I've flown 15 different aircraft to include the Grob 109 Sailplane in Ft. Wayne and T-28 Trojan in Texas. I moved around a lot to include living 20-years in Canada where I was given a modified C152 to fly at will. All I had to do was put gas in it for eight-years. I developed a back injury in 2010 and went through many procedures and medications, one of them being Oxycodone. I was and have never been addicted to it, but because of the bad rap it has received, I stopped flying for fear of losing my medical. I returned to the US in 2014 and continued my writing. You can see my six-books on Amazon. I'm writing a 7th. I have been featured in a magazine called The Universal Pages. Each of my main characters flies a personal jet of some type. The primary character flies a rebuilt Polish TS-11 Iskra. So the reason for meeting you is to get a better understanding of what it's like to sit in one's own jet, preparation, phraseology, etc. BTW, while in Canada, I was on the airport escort security detail at Calgary International. I got to meet and sit in the seat of the former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Not many Americans can make that statement. Also I got to meet two F-16 pilots on their visit and the picture taken of me with them is used in two of my books. As you look at my profile picture, that's the same picture with the pilot's edited out. So again these are my reasons for wanting to meet you.

As a former resident of Chicago I can tell you that avoiding Chicago all together is a great idea. When I fly, I get all my fuel in Indiana or Wisconsin. I avoid Illinois services like the plague. I do however pay the 2nd highest real estate tax in Hellinois...I will escape 100% in the next year or two.....Love these videos. You're a tad faster than my little LSA. 😁👍👌

I love watching your videos. I was a crew chief on t 33 and f 100 and the f4 phantom. I always wanted to be a pilot but became a great crew chief. I went on four incentive flights in the t- bird one in the F 100 f and three in the f4. My jet 63_7411 is in the Ft. Smith afb museum and I actually got to see her six years ago. She was the oldest flying phantom in the air force and retired with close to 8,000 hrs on the air frame. I feel like I am in the cockpit with you in your videos. Thank you for your service.

Just spoke with Shaun at CPL. He's getting better. But, it's a long, long road to recovery. All because you forgot to mention him the first time. It's nice that you remembered him in this video. But, the damage is done and we'll just have to be patient until he's back to full strength. 🤨

My worst departure was out of Midway back in the 70's We were cleared to cross the runway and thank the co-pilot stopped as the runway was live the other way I did not believe a big jet could stop that quick---it felt like the front of the plane was touching the runway.... still alive today in 2020. Your are the best.. My uncle flew fighter planes in WW2 and Korea He used to fly into Erie, Pa. in a P-51 Mustang to see us. back in the late 50' s I got to sit in it before he left and what a neat plane .. Listening to the midway weatherman's drone reminded me of my old ham radio days. Nowadays we use computers and it also sounds like that. But coding using computers is so much better than when I first started back in the '60s using just my ears to hear those dots and dashes. I did get the 45 WPM though which was an Advanced Extra license. Now, I can build systems too just about any specifications if I wanted to. BA in Theology '63, Masters in Industrial Computers, Robotics, and Electronics Engineering '96. Military retired CWO-3 28-years. My military was between college degrees.

A long time ago, I was in a L-1011 going to Orlando with my teenage sister, who had never flown. This is a tough kid, survived childhood osteosarcoma, went on to become a very successful JD/MD combo. But this was her first flight, so off we went...we get on board, seats just forward of the wing to try to get her the best flight. Everything was fine, until the Orlando approach. There was a ring of thunderstorms around the city, and we flew for 45 minutes hoping there would be a break. No luck. The minute the pilot said “Folks, we’re going to have to-“ I reached over, and cranked my sister’s seatbelt as tight as I could get it. It wasn’t 10 seconds later, we were on a rollercoaster. Complete free fall. Flight attendants hit the ceiling, the over head bins dumped, people let out shrieks, lights go out in the cabin. I am looking past my sister out the window, and that cloud was as dark an indigo as I have ever seen, with veins of lightening. She slams her hand down on my arm with a death grip, and we both thought our parents were going to lose both kids on the same day. The engines are screaming, and I am waiting to see the engine or wing break off. I don’t know if we hit a microburst or what, it was the mid 80’s and I don’t know what was available in terms of onboard radar, but I have a healthy respect for thunderstorms while in the sky with them. Love the channel.

EDIT: Per P1D, i will never fly through a thunderstorm.

My longest engine running delay was at Midway. I sat on the ramp just outside of Atlantic with one engine running for an hour and a half. Arrived there during SWA rush hour for a turn. I wound up having to stop for fuel at Ship Rock trying to make the west coast. As far as Atlantic ramp fees, I’ve been to every Atlantic in the country. When I land at LAX, They charge us $25 for a G-IV. The ramp fees usually have to do with the municipality. You’re going to the Windy City, it’s not called that because the wind blows. I love gap running at night. Sometimes it’s like a horror show with the lightning lighting up the cockpit. You remember what the F-16 book said about keeping your hands away from the canopy when the airframe gets charged?

Howdy Greg, nothing like picking your way through storms. I remember one time flying with my dad we were dodging storms at night on our way home. The night sky was lit up with lightning bolts. We managed to fly around the storms. And landed safely. What a ride that was. Nice landing by the way. It almost felt like you were getting a little ground effect on landing. I couldn’t tell when you touched down. Didn’t even jiggle the camera.

Hello, Greg. Interesting that I came across your channel as you’re flying into Midway. My Dad was an early airmail pilot back in the 20s (the 1920s). He flew CAM routes= around the midwest before he went back to the west coast, flying up/down (Seattle to San Diego) and points in between. He led a very interesting life in aviation. Back to Midway. I have a letter and post card (postmarked July 17, 1928) which was the 'first flight' into Midway (then known as Chicago Municipal) on the inaugural air mail flight from Kalamazoo to Chicago... Dad was the pilot of that flight. If you didn’t know, it was renamed Midway Airport in honor of, and to commemorate, the WWII Battle of Midway. Of course, all this happened well before I was born, as he was 20 years older than my mother and I was the last of three born. Many other interesting pieces of aviation history I’d like to share, if you’re interested in aviation history. I enjoyed watching your vid and am looking forward to viewing more. Thanks for posting.

I really am enjoying your videos, especially the views of your panel and all of the information that is displayed. I got my license back in 1977, and haven't flown any since then, in the front seat that is. I did my lessons flying out of PBI, so from day 1 , i learned about all of the radio usage from day one. I did work as a performance engineer for close to 50 years at Pratt & Whitney, so I have been involved in aviation all of my adult life. So watching your videos shows how much has changed over the years.
