One LP of a two LP collection issued in the early 1960s on the RCA Victor Red Seal Collector's Issue label, catalogue number LCT-6011.
Solesmes Abbey or St. Peter's Abbey, Solesmes (Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes) is a Benedictine monastery in Solesmes (Sarthe, France), famous as the source of the restoration of Benedictine monastic life in the country under Dom Prosper Guéranger after the French Revolution. It was originally founded in 1010 as a priory of the Benedictine Le Mans abbey. The abbey is noted for its crucial contribution to the advancement of the Roman Catholic liturgy and the revival of Gregorian chant. A documentary film on life at Solesmes was made in 2009 and focuses on the tradition of the chant at the monastery.

I converted to Christianity in Solesme after spending a week there in 1988 listening to these chants several times a day. True that the name of Dom Gajard remains a legend. The reason why Gregorian chant has such an impact when it comes from Solesme, is because historically speaking, it was the first abbot of Solesme who did the research to gather all the manuscripts of this genre of chant, lost since the period of the Renaissance. The Rennaissance was such a time not much different from ours with the advent of computers. Right after the French Revolution in the 1700s, these chants were even forbidden, so it took until the 19th century for Abbot Guéranger to succeed in his compilation. during the 20th century, all Benedictine monasteries in Europe would send a group of students to Solesme to learn the method and bring it back home. that is how the famous Monk of Silos of Spain gained their popularity during the 1990s and it is one of the reasons why the monks of Solesme do not accpet offers to make tours around the world with their chant, in order to avoid massive tourism as it has already happened in Silos.

I am glad you posted this special disc. If I could find ways to bring people to listen and to understand what these men are singing, people would too eventually participate praising God through these Gregorian Songs of Praise. Thank you again for posting this beautiful Gregorian songs with only voices of men dedictated themselves to these praises for God Father Son Holy Spirit. Amen.

God bless you, Mr. Hertzberg (what a meaningful name!) the 1930 recording is one of Dom Gajard's earliest - to my mind, and having listened and sung myself in a Schola, Dom Gajard is supreme over all, and so also the so-called "Solemnes Method. I truly believe that only the French voice and accents can make the holiest and most emotional of all sounds. Others follow with merit; but Solemnes OWNS Gregorian Chant. Thank you again and again!

I, too, am impressed with this early recording. The voices are masculine-sounding, not girly as are, IMO, the more recent recordings. The re-vitalization/reconstruction of Gregorian Chant happened in France, a Romance language country. Listen to some of the German monks' choirs.

Your postings are always appreciated, davidhertzberg! Considering the era these cuts came out of, this is likely one of the most authentic representations out there of Gregorian chant as handed down through the centuries. Think of all the refined operatic voices we got over the years which developed with their singing of the Missa Cantata! Sadly these Masses are generally few and far between nowadays.

I have never met a Catholic in my life who worshiped Mary. God honoured his mother, she is the queen mother because she is the queen of a King. So like the apostle John we take Mary as our mother and by respecting the Mother of our Christ we respect Him. Of all creatures she is the most perfect, and why shouldn't God make his mother beautiful? Sacred Icons/music/architecture and writings can help us humans (who happen to be sensual beings) to grow in understanding the sacred mysteries.
