Very true ! I was trying to understand what made me feel emotional in this song's rendition. And I think the fact that the song is sang by a group rather than one person (like the original) gives a completely different meaning to it.

@@dirks9816 They said that so they wouldn't be sued more than they did because of that song, but if you read Napoleon's biography, you'll see that those lyrics tell his story. Louis XVI did not "used to rule the world", for the French territories in his time are nothing compared to those in Napoleon's time.

It's kind of an amalgamation song as far as I can tell nothing is specific. It's general themes that have played out dozens of times with a number of historical references. I don't think it's meant to tell a specific story. I think the French Revolution has some of the most romantic and yet ruthless imagery attached to it. It was a people's uprising against a decadent aristocracy followed by decades of some of the most vicious bloodshed in history. Not a new story but damn did they do it in style.

We went to Birmingham symphony hall as year 4 group, to sing with lots of other schools from the midlands. We had all learnt the songs we sang separately in our own school. This was one of the songs we were taught. It was the year our much loved friend and head teacher retired. I remember watching him have to leave the auditorium as listening to a couple of thousand children reduced him to tears. This version evoked that memory. I loved it.

It's actually kind of interesting to look at this song through a religious lens, about how no matter how much power you possess it is all meaningless in the end before god

I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning, I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listen as the crowd would sing Now the old king is dead! Long live the king! One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain Once you go there was never, never a honest word And that was when I ruled the world It was a wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn't believe what I'd become Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh, who would ever want to be king? I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Calvary choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Calvary choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world

The song's title, “Viva la Vida,” is a Spanish saying that means “long live life” or “live the life”. The song's lyrics deal with themes of power, fame, and the pursuit of success. The song's album cover is a portion of the 1830 painting “Liberty Leading the People” by French artist Eugène Delacroix. The song's name comes from a painting by Frida Kahlo, a 20th-century Mexican artist.

My favourite song of all time, it came out when my youngest son was shortlisted for the part of Bran in Game of thrones and it seemed to sum up the character of the series, we had 6 months of recalls, secrecy and excitement , he was pipped at the post by Issac, amazing memories of happy exciting times with my amazing little 10 year old, now a BA. in arts and a Master in law, still makes me cry every time. Thank you.
