Hey speaking as young person who didn't go to college for the very reason you explained (I.e. college degrees not having the job turnover rate to make a loan sustainable) i can tell you this is 100% true i used to be a die hard r6 player i logged thousands of hours and payed hundreds of dollars in cosmetics, but as I graduated high-school and started to get a job and live on my own i found myself not being able to touch to the game because of how psychologically taxing it is when I play sometimes especially when I'm less used to the rhythm of the game my heart rate and adrenaline will spike say during a clutch or gun fight in a very distressing way that although wasn't new to me but is very upsetting for someone who invested a lot of time energy and money into a game I used to love. Now I play games i can shut my brain off and although I still have a fun i still wish I could enjoy the fun of learning a more difficult tactical and mechanical game with a community of people that actually supports one another which is very rare in the seige space especially as a trans person.

i remember in college, i was ONLY playing Escape From Tarkov, which is a game that has a similar investment of time in order to be somewhat skilled at the game. I also picked up a part time job, washing dishes at a restaurant. I had NO energy to play such a draining game after class, working on my feet, and homework was done. I would just rot in my bed watching youtube. Going to get a job as a firefighter in the coming months, and I can't imagine I'm going to want to play videogames at 8am after a 24 hour shift.

The last part really hit home, as funny as the unemployment lobby joke is, it's literally the same process I went through. Just made me realize I used to be the sweaty unemployed 16 year old and now just a few years later I'm unable to keep up with the new generation of 16 year old sweats. While I still like competitive gaming, it's just much more complicated to keep up with then when time was basically a limitless commodity.

The section towards the end is truly something eye opening. I never got around to finishing college as it just wasn't for me. Tried a couple of different majors and nothing stuck, ultimately just found myself happier going into the workforce fulltime instead. While I did end up playing Siege and some other competitive games after dropping out, work just ended up being less stressful than getting yelled at and beaten by the younger generation on these games. Nowadays I mostly play chill singleplayer games or some live service games I don't need a whole team to get enjoyment out of. I also picked up some other hobbies to start gaming less, and they have helped tremendously for my mental and emotional health

I love siege, which is why I've stopped playing. I'm mentally too drained to pick it back up, and it means too much to me to simply waste with a bad mood and worse gameplay. Even as part of the "unemployed gamer" demographic, it's not like you need a job to get drained. The world certainly gives us enough things to be anxious about. And god knows what skeletons remain in the closet. For all it's faults, siege over time taught me the importance of remaining calm. Or at least not going full tilt. And I've made friends through it, as implausible as that sounds. But I'm now officially part of the retirement home for operators and recruits club. I went from barely grasping the meta to not grasping it at all, and that's ironically more frustrating than just being plain bad. Because i know i was decent once, and i probably could be good again. But i can't get myself to care about that. Maybe one day, hopefully when siege is still alive and kicking.

Honestly I feel the same way about Destiny 2. The game is just, I love it. But it's such a chore to try and enjoy or get to the good part. And the meta is always changing and a pain in the rear to keep up with. When there's 30 minute damage tests for like, one weapon and it's combinations it's just too much. The PvP is painful, and PvPvE has been completely abandoned. Just watch the Skeletor videos and you'll see the shit show THAT is.

Kinda in the same boat, i was a hard core siege player, have the ranks and hours to prove it but slowly drifted away and at some point, i had time but i just could not care anymore, i could not care to learn another map, not another operator, not another meaningless patch note that mostly just changed which gun i was getting shot by. Now days, if i do play, i do realize i could be good again, i could learn the maps, the new ops, the reworks the whole package but, i just don´t care enough to do that. Siege is in the best state its ever been in for a new player but for a veteran, it just shows how little we have changed and gets me asking, if ubi does not care to innovate, if the players won´t try to do anything productive but complain to the void and if the game just slowly moves forward with "new map, some random op balance change and bouncing scopes around" style, why would i devote more hours, more thinking time and more research time to a game that mostly shows every reason why i should not care anymore. In a way, its funny, the less the game changes, the more i stay on board of how to play it but also, the more i lose interest in it due to seeing how little we have advanced since the days of me playing non stop every waking hour.

As usual you hit everything on the head. Thanks for keeping it real G. I used to joke that I don't want to play an ultra-stressful multiplayer game when I already have to deal with other people in an ultra-stressful job at work but this is increasingly true, which usually translates to leaving multiplayer games altogether because any minor failure will lead to someone yelling at you. At this point the only multiplayer game I can see myself playing is where the "multiplayer" is completely tangential, like solo deathmatch games or POE2 where there isn't much "teamwork" going on. It'll be interesting to see if this becomes the new trend.

Totally understand your sentiments, as I've been there before years ago. As I worked an actual 9-5 full-time job, I realized that I'm no longer able to fully dedicate my time to play the game as hardcore as I could, as the only time available for me after working will be only around 3 hours, which I doubt people will choose to spent those remaining hours of the working day into a game that requires full of our attention (not to mention it could disrupt my sleeping quality later too if I play the game due to how adrenaline pumping the game is). Despite of that, at the beginning I still try to pour some time into the game in alternative days, until late 2023 when I had enough of how Ubisoft handling Siege. I stopped playing Siege entirely and swore to not play the game anymore when the server issue back in around November to December 2023 making the game literally unplayable and half-dead. The worst part is Ubisoft never bothered to make a PR statement on why the game being dead for almost the entire month. They only bothered to make a statement on January 2024, which I guess their entire staff were having a Christmas break lmao. Regardless, that was the final straw at that broke the camel's back, after years of optimism for playing the game since Y3 riddled with consistent bug occurrence, cheater issue, ranked 2.0 caused a significant drop of gameplay quality due to its format improvements, etc.Ever since then I never played much of competitive games since, other than Overwatch if I feel the itch to point and shoot (heck, even Overwatch isn't as tense as Siege so it's kind of a plus).

As someone with both a bachelors and a Masters , what you said about folks not having a KZbin for these tough time hits hard. I've been looking for a job for over a year as I only work part time and I've only gotten one interview in the entire search. I've been trying to get into content creation, but it's a bit hard and frustrating not really having a direct goal with content when it seems everyone everywhere makes content. The question of "what are you doing to stand out?" really frustrates me because realistically everything is being talked about. So how do you stack up to people who have been doing this over a decade and also somehow grow from essentially no one to someone people actively want to listen to. Hoping to get better at it, but the lack of additional income along with a very hard job market to break into is frustrating.

As a university student with a job lined up after graduation, I gotta say I feel for a lot of fellow students who have degrees that basically provide little to no value to their resumes. I am a semi-credentialed actuary with a 6 figure salary lined up, and many of my classmates are students who can't even get a job at the local coffee shop. It seems the system has demanded that students all go to college when about 75% of them should be laborers, high skilled blue-collar workers, or just a completely different non degree requiring field. Obviously, the incentives are there with colleges having endowments that rival GDPs of countries, but we really should not be selling out the youth for a few extra green.

Great video, I really wish more people have the mindset you have. Ever since joining the workforce I always had the thought in the back of my mind of what many of my favorite content creators would do after they fell off. I've been watching KZbin since 2008 and I know that nobody is invincible, all numbers go down eventually. But without the insane ad revenues that were around in the early 2010s, I knew it wasn't very profitable later on unless you sold your soul to sponsors. I'm glad that lots of good people made it out, but there's defintelty some that I'm worried for. And I know there's lots of transferable skills involved with marketing and such, but that's already a saturated industry. Good luck out there, you deserve a soft landing.

I played seige a lot when I was on console with a couple friends. Near the end it was grinding comp every session. Swapped to pc and my sessions became less and less. Your channel stayed in my subox because I still like the game and love your perspective I didn't roll my eyes at the politics. You brought up real issues. I play games to escape. When I think of my inital gaming spaces had diverse niches. Casual/competitive and extra media. And KZbin. Holy shit you tube. COD, gmod, tf2 montages and funny moments. Halo fails and webseries. But there was a shift when the is a large audience of gamers looking to improve. Guides weren't a foreign concept but its been a recent trend where people can make content of a single character of a game analyzing the capablites in a game. Like I remember learning gahndi hopping in halo but that experience I think was diffent then looking up a vidoe on how to play a specific character in x video game. Great topic, and awesome convo

I feel like with how much the industry has evolved in the last 20 years or so I’ve started to feel like competitive gaming has become more of an ego sustainable habit in regards to people my age and around. People on siege especially seem to revel in thinking they’re the best, and anyone who outsmarts them is ‘playing weird’ and that not only pushes the idea to experiment further but more importantly drives away new players, which with my previous point seems to be what some people want. I can’t say I’m not guilty of complaining about new players, or ignoring basic game sense because I think I can hit a nice shot, but myself, my friends and a lot of people still value the core mechanics of siege. I feel like the ‘COD monkey meta’ is driven by people that simply don’t get satisfaction from the idea of outwitting your opponent, but rather from being mechanically skilled and hitting nasty shots, or having a high KD. Ego definitely plays into how people play especially around the 20 year olds, it feels like sucking at a game simply isn’t acceptable anymore

Good video. I'm trying to think of more actual analysis, but it's 5:49am. Its totally accurate, the idea that lots of people don't have time and brainspace to commit to a competitive game. At this point, people get stressed during their "free" time if they aren't optimizing every second of it, because we all know how little time we have. Its always been so tone deaf to me, how big companies are still trying to make live service games. At this point, most people have time for 1 live service game, at best. And FOMO has gotten to the point that I don't even think about trying a new game, cuz I'll either miss out on my old games goodies, or I'll not be good enough at the new game to earn the cool stuff.

When you hit 1 and 3 hours of time in a session, you get a little warning message in global chat that long playtimes can have negative effects. This practice seems so...quaint...by current day standards that view playtime as a core metric to be maximized.

Hey Gwen longtime viewer here Just wanted to say you've been a consistent beacon of reason when it comes to gaming for me. Lately I realize you have always been a very solid rational person when it comes to gaming and I have always appreciated your down to Earth demeanor about gaming, life, and your career. Following you through your transistion, your moving experience, and just reading your tweets from time to time, it's really inspiring to me that you keep going and you're still motivated to have fun with games. I say that because the more time I spend in college the harder it is for me to go back to enjoying games between semesters. This video resonated with me a lot cause I find that my interest in R6 gaming has completely whithered away as I focused nearly 100% on academia. It's been a phenomenon where I still love the clips I see, the identity of characters in game, and the friends I've made through the community, but my patience for the game itself and the general playerbase is absolutely gone. I could not possibly solo queue like I did back in Y6 or Y7 over Covid. I really am glad someone else recognizes that for people who are working a lot, gaming like R6S is becoming more of a chore than something you can unwind to. I hate to divide casuals and hardcore gamers because to me, some people can grind out a game and consider that fulfilling and that's kinda where I was for years before I moved off to college. The more time I spend away from the R6 grind the more I realize I can live without it, and the closer I get to finishing my 4 year degree the more I will find myself deviating from competitive game grinding as a leisure and pivoting to casual gaming more, especially if the average siege player doesn't grow more of a mindset about teamplay and playing smart. I will probably love R6S/whatever Ubi cooks for Rainbow and its cast of characters as long as I am alive, but these days it is increasingly hard to commit to a rank grind like I might have even 2 years ago. Being off R6S for 90% of the year has really opened up my life to a lot of different things, too. I have plenty more hobbies and games I spend more time on. I think the only thing this video neglected is just how fun this game still is with a group of good friends. I hopped onto this game last week with two high school friends who grinded to plat with me years ago and we still had a blast, and this game always has that going for it. Even through thick and thin, changing lives and all that, I can still hop on with some trusted friends and this game can still feel refreshing as a team experience that I can rely on. This year might even be the first invitational I ever attend and I hope that it maintains my love of this game just a little bit still. Anyway thanks for being awesome like always G.

This video is some speaking truth to power ish. I used to be a Capital “G” Gamer during high school and early college. Played R6 consistently as a Plat 1 in ranked, DMG in CSGO came out, playing the newest call of duty for some frag fest fun. Then, got into the STEM field of study as chemist. As classes got harder, my commitment to games declined as my love for music increased. Music heals while comp games kinda drain. Would only really play comp with friends since they made it worthwhile to have a fun time. Fast forward to now, I’m one of the lucky few that got to use my degree straight outta college as an analytical chemist. No connections, just right time right place type ish. And what do I play? …3 games. Warframe, Stalker 2, and World of Tanks. Warframe and WoT I’ve played since their betas, and I love the stalker trilogy so Stalker 2 was a no brainer. Only comp game is WoT and calling it “competitive” is generous. I would never say games are for losers with no jobs. I love games as entertainment and art and even when I had no job, calling me a loser was more than a stretch. But having a life just eats up the time that would go to gaming. Going to bars meant less games, meeting up with friends for dinner meant less games. Hell, if I chose to have a love life, mighta junked by PC altogether. C’est la Vie. Great video tho Gwen!

My plan to keep Siege’s memory alive for me is to name my dream cars after my favorite operators. I’ve already named my Supra Azami.

I used to play Siege because I typically grind Ranked in PvP games since I like knowing both me and my teammates are trying to succeed - it also makes the silly stuff all the funnier in my eyes. But the Ranked 2.0 changes made starting the grind more distasteful to me and cheating hit a fever pitch with rage hackers for a third of my games one afternoon. I've since picked up The Finals in lieu of Siege because the gadget sandbox and counterplay scratches the itch Siege used to.

I also think a lot of gaming revolves around your upbringing. If you had consoles or pc’s growing up with friends who you could run 4 player split screen on games with. Things that wanted to keep me coming back was my friends. I do not nearly think of myself as a gamer unless I have people to game with (of course mainly comp style games). I think if you have people that help take you away from that mental taxing endless loop of gaming then things would be far different than only solo gaming.

2 years ago I would put at least 5 hours a day on siege especially in the COVID pandemic before that. Now my mental capacity allows me to only play it for 2 games at best.

Siege is interesting. It's so unique and fun when you have people working together but man my experience soured me. Last year I felt every other game I got teamkilled for whatever reason (I'm a solo console player) and now I'm just sitting and watching (Playing cheaters certainly didnt help). In other games if people are being toxic, I just turn off comms and play but because Siege has friendly fire, games can get ruined so fast. As I've gotten older, I just don't have the energy or time to deal with people sinking my games, so I just stopped playing. I'd love to play again but I'm not sure if I'd get a positive experience again.

Graduated last year, nearly entirely quit competitive games/taking them any seriously at all once I've started working my tech job. With limited free time in the evenings once I finish work, why would I play a competitive game that is a total coinflip if I A.) Have a good/okay game or B.) Run into toxicity or frustrating loses? Instead I could have used that time queuing OW/R6/LoL/Deadlock and instead play a singleplayer or co-op game and pretty much guarentee my enjoyment. And I can put it down at any moment.

Find it funny how relatable the situation with r6 was/ is for me: Played the game 7-8 Jears the cheater situation went crazy, played some valorant and came "back" to see the gaming landscape as it really is, jobless ore more likely 13 jear olds who game after school. Damn we old. Ps Love the effort you put in the research fore this one🔥🔥🔥

The sad thing is that we have to lost something to gain a small buff in an operator nowadays. Ubi has this bad habit of balancing things just for the sake of it. Can we have a muzzle break for the TCSG-12? They will have to nerf Kaid and Goyo somehow. Can we get an usable F2, less recoil, grips back? Something bad will happen to the operator. (I wouldn't mind she being a 1 speed but please do something!)

You're missing the fact that the GOOD jobs require degrees. Sure you might struggle to find a job with a degree but without it it might be impossible anyways
@matttheradartechnician4308

Also you need a good degree. If you are not proficient in high-level mathematics, you better know software, want to be a professor, or your fate is sealed. Knowing PowerBI, Python, or R is the minimum at this point, and only jobs that get a lot of guaranteed money are any quantitative analytics. Highschool's in America do not set up students for success nearly as much as they should. Bringing back textbooks would be an amazing start as many students are lost, just listening to the teacher's daily lectures. Some need extra info, guidance, and practice. Teacher's gatekeeping all the knowledge when they are often times unreachable does not teach students how to independently critically think. Education now is just cookie-cutter mcdonalds quality where you are churning out diplomas instead of teaching discipline, time management, and academics. The large emphasis on checking if the work is done rather than hammering fundamentals is a major problem. Students in calculus classes shouldn't need algebra refreshers. Basically, it's the normal school version of a McDojo.

If the highly opinionated groups or toxicity in certain gaming communities upsets you, then you are playing the wrong games.Stop playing nonsensical live service competitive multiplayer games. They are usually garbage and attract garbage. If you want to play something fun with your friends, look into PVE coop games like space marines 2 and The Outlast Trials. A lot less negativity and toxicity in these games and they have large communities of people that just look to have fun

The one thing i see youtubers do poorly a lot is failing to pivot their content, for example a lot of gaming youtubers just swap games without attempting to carry over an audience and they wonder why their content begins to do poorly. You must blend the 2 audiences before switching up your content.
