Shantaram was very good! I've only just begun to read The Mountain Shadow. I don't expect it to be as good as Shantaram, but hopefully I ll get some enjoyment out of it

It's true, they are immensely important to culture, and long may books survive. However the natural precursor is thought and the spoken word. Literacy is the a priori implication in the video, but some can only hear and not read. Before books priceless and immeasurable knowledge was passed on word-of-mouth via extraordinary retentive faculties. e.g. The Vedas. If books disappeared it would be a disaster, but internal realization and knowledge would still be preserved within each one of us, and it could still be shared (not that I'm wishing for any 'Fahrenheit 451' scenario).

I did not like it. Could be ,any kind of crime is not my cap of tea. It was audiobook I had to listen to. And I returned it to the library twice not finishing it. If not a Book Club discussion I would had not finish it. So many plots in the book and the main character is a great guy “loved by everyone” . I could never put a line between his character and reality of his life. I’m sure I’m not going to reach for a sequel.

you already told me this, but the mountain shadow is probably the worst book i have ever struggled to read. shantaram was brilliant the follow up was utter cack.

max thomas i literally bought mountain shadow the day i finished reading shantaram for the second time. was so excited i didn't even start it till the saturday i was off work. the first few chapters i was livid!! waiting for him to come round and start writing properly, but no, he kept on talking shyte and calling himself shantaram, and that bit about the georges inheriting 35 mill!!! fuck off. and karla staring with 16 queens that annoyed me the most. i wana meet him and slap him for letting me down soooooo badly. hey max thomas, if you want some escapism try Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, also kafka on the shore by same author..

Ha ha I will, but I'm afraid he has retired from public life. I'll check out year of the runaways. Thanks.
