In his advanced years, Father Francis Chisholm receives a visit from Monsignor Sleeth in his imaginary Scottish parish of Tynecastle in Tweedside. The monsignor conveys to Francis that the bishop believes it might be prudent for him to retire since his recent unorthodox teachings have become a distraction. The monsignor retreats to his chamber at the rectory and discovers Father Francis' journal, which narrates his account from 1878. As the Monsignor begins reading the journal, a flashback ensues.
