Well done, Dr. Sadler! Epictetus nails it again. He is seemingly the author of Psalm 23: "I shall not want." People often quote that, but many do not seem to comprehend its actual meaning.

Your insightful commentary resonates deeply. I believe that the dread of losing their affluence motivates some wealthy individuals to amass and hold onto more wealth. Perhaps they perceive falling down the socioeconomic ladder as a fate worse than death. The wisdom of Epictetus truly offers valuable perspective.

Yes, when we look at our fears about poverty, whether we are wealthy or not, we can find all sorts of other fears lurking in the background

+Mark Trumble You're very welcome! But not to be anxious about, right?

If you suspect I have been comparing and contrasting the proper attitude towards death ( Epictetus vs Heidegger) you are correct. But What I really mean is I do sometimes get troubled about economic matters. I look to the future, and plan, work and save, even though ( if I take from what I read in the newspapers) I may be doing well economically. Part of the reason I may be is my attitude towards wealth and employment. I do think ( as Epictetus states in the Enchiridion) that the body is the proper measure for what we economically need. ( shoes that have gone past nature: literal diamonds on my work boots.). This means at this point it does not take a lot of income to make me wealthy. I tell my wife, if something went wrong, I would try to get a labour job ( still fairly fit but my grey hair may be a hindrance)or find some used bookstore to work in. But I want to be a teacher, and more specifically a philosophy teacher . Why? Celebrity as a "wise man" . At this point I would shun it, as I do have some contradictions, and I see how people talk on the internet. My original impulse was to learn the content better( broader and more insight). Youthful valuations of sadus, cynics, and hermits still occasionally rise, but I do not live as any of these heroes. This lecture identified my "status anxiety", and indicated youthful heroes, and made me think of old promises to myself.

Mark Trumble Let's do a 1-on-1 sometime, after the holidays, and brainstorm ideas for how that drive to teach might be realized
