It’s just a shame he can’t put the car into a pressure chamber and produce grainy charts of manifold pressure, horsepower, at different altitudes, with and without water injection, as if it was a P-51.😊 I remember that decades ago when I had a 124 spider, Al Cosentino sold metal replacements for the driveshaft coupling doughnuts from his Faza shop. I’m surprised there wasn’t an off the shelf equivalent for the Alfa drivetrain.

My model building started with wood models, where I remember building a Lockheed F-94C. Anyway, I grew up just south of Venice in Westchester/Playa Del Rey and graduated from Westchester High. I remember back in about 1970, I came within an inch of buying still one of my favorite cars and designed by Giugiaro, a 1969 Alfa 1750 GT. If you remember it, the early models had a winged seat and a unusable rear seat which made it a much cheaper to insure "sedan."

Well done! That is certainly a terrifying amount of grunt in a classic spider 😁. The one thing I'm interested in now though is how the handling balance could be restored with this significant increase in torque? Uprating tyres and brakes is obviously a must but then you start running into problematic roll, dive and skipping on the track, uprating the springs, shocks, bushings, mounts and sway-bars leaves you with significant body flex and a jackhammer ride. In the end you'd need to have body braces, additional welds or even a partial roll cage. Not to mention any additional fixes needed for the inevitable drivetrain issues you've already partially mentioned. I may be completely wrong though, alot of classic alfas I've experienced have been extremely accepting of significant drivetrain and chassis modification, especially the transaxle de dion models. Racing is not just in their blood but their bones and even DNA from the factory. Great content as usual and excited to see more of this project in the future!

Phew, I bet that thing is fun as can be. Couple weeks back, there was a rollcaged, tastefully restomodded Giulia Junior 1300 parked in the neighbourhood, car was done just right in my opinion, and you could see it was getting used, and not just as a tracktool. One of the few times in my recent life that I felt "car jealousy" and walked around it two times before going to work... now something like that with a supercharger - give me three days of good weather and it'll see at least a dozen alpine passes.

Greg! Thanks for this. I’m dreadfully sorry to know that you lost your Pop… please accept my deepest condolences. --I liked this vid despite no exp w/Italian cars; my only claim to that end is that my family is of the same heritage, but I cut my car-guy chops on Japanese stuff… Datsuns specifically, AND I actually do possess 2 smallish pre-‘70’s drop-top versions from that classic marque (somewhat Alfa-like) in my stable of 4 “proto-Nissans,” but I’ll keep it quiet if you’d care to hazard an educated guess as to the specific year-model they are-both of the cars these days aren’t that common-let’s just say, one of the two is highly-super-ultra-rare. But in saying so, of the four I mentioned the other two are Datsun “Z-cars”: a 1973 240z & 1975 280z… the ‘75 is my daily; the 240 is the first car I ever bought at 23 years old, and I’m over the 1/2 century mark now, but I’ve never let it go. I was stoked to know that you are using SDS. My 280z is equipped with a Simple Digital Systems EM-4 model (fuel-only). This is THE BEST product I’ve ever bought for automotive modification out of ANY project I’ve ever embarked upon over the years. It’s just as the name says: simple. However, a novice/newbie would be tasked to the utmost at installing something like it because you’ve just gotta know your basic auto-mechanical & electrical basics & theory; but I did the install on my own & I’m just a simple backyard-shade-tree hack wrench-turner… but when I had the system installed & I did the prelim set-up with the stand-alone controller, it was dialed-in in like no time flat and I haven’t had to touch it since then, at all…ever. That was over a decade ago. It’s literally “Set it & Forget it” with SDS. No BS! Some things in this world are still built with quality & service life in mind-SDS is that kind of product. I commend you & your content Greg, I always learn great stuff from you. My very Best to you & your kin.
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles8 ай бұрын
Thanks, I do like the Datsuns, the Roadsters and straight six Z cars. SDS is great, I'm making a kit for the Alfa to make it as close to plug and play as possible.
@canthony7228 ай бұрын
Right on. Equipping the 280z with SDS was straightforward cuz it’s the first year model of Z to have factory EFI & it was easy to retrofit. Before 1975, all US-spec Z’s had dual carbs, but my ‘73 240z has also been converted to EFI with a later “ZX” model turbo system-now reverted back to carbs for originality, but I kept the entire ZXt engine setup & plan to install in the 280z no doubt along with an updated SDS controller. I’m glad you’re a Datsun Roadster fan. I’ve driven a few & currently own two, which includes an original 1967.5 2000 “Sports” model (5spd,OHC) w/matching #’s. About 1000 were built. It was a very lucky find. Thanks again Greg!

Ah, to be 40 years younger (so I could get into and out of the car) and quite a bit more wealthy. Back in the day, when I was really a car and engine geek, I'd have been all over this sort of thing. I've never understood higher math, which kept me from becoming an engineer (either automotive or aeronautical), but as a much younger man, I was definitely an enthusiast, driving an amazingly unreliable MGA, then a "Formula 'S' Barracuda, and I kept up with lots of reading. I actually know the theory of how a 4-cycle gasoline-powered engine works, the apex of a curve, etc. - none of my high school and college acquaintances had a clue, so I always won the arguments that inevitably came up in 'car talk' bull sessions. Now, it's interesting, but I don't feel like I'm being deprived because I don't have a cool car, and don't feel compelled to tweak what I'm currently driving.

@demetridar5068 ай бұрын
The older cars have a much larger fun factor for the same performance. Especially when driven in winding roads. I would say this car is faster than it needs to be. Especially given the limited protection of the convertible body. And the water injection complicates things. I would reduce the boost some and get rid of the water injection. The car reliability would improve, and possibly the car will be easier and safer to drive fast in the twisties. Sure, you will lose a few drag races against low end performance cars, such as, say a Challenger V6, but so what? There is a lot more in driving than drag races. Your next Alfa should be a 1970 GTV. As for me, I do my driving in twisties with a Volvo 122 (maybe more than one). Much slower, but the more robust structure make you more brave! Cheers.
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles8 ай бұрын
Running lower boost without water injection is not problem, although I like the extra power and the water injection, but to each his own. I suppose part of the beauty of supercharging is that it's so customizable with different pulleys and boost levels.
@demetridar5068 ай бұрын
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles Just don't get killed! ;) I hope your system has a knock sensor to retard the timing in case your water injection stops working.
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles8 ай бұрын
These engine don't have knock sensor, but the water injection has plenty of warnings built it. Certainly more than you get for a clogged fuel injector.
@demetridar5068 ай бұрын
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles The intensity of the knock at high boost with no or reduced water injection will be much more severe than with a clogged injector, and more likely to damage the engine. Also, if you drive the car regularly, there is no reason to have a clogged injector. But I see the other side of the coin. Having an old car like this with so much more power than stock has a certain level of novelty. I like to use my old cars as transportation as well as fun. As a result, I appreciate the simplicity of the old machines, and of course the fact that they are analog as opposed to digital, its man and machine. When one makes modifications like this, you start diluting some the simplicity factor. But to your credit, you have not gone that far yet on this one! The old Volvo engines are very good in handling boost because they have a very robust bottom end. Some people have installed super and turbo chargers on them. But I have little motivation for that. Even with 15 psi of boost, any of my near stock 440s will be a lot faster in the straight line. And in the type of course that the Volvo is fun to drive, the extra power will seldom be useful. But if I lived in Europe or Japan where you can only have one car, I would be tempted. Cheers.

Thanks Greg, you sir are a man of your word! Guessing 24V bussos aren't abundant in the states, but a good 3.0 or 3.2 makes 220-250hp at fly, so a bit of a bump compared to old 12Vs!!

The highest 24valver we had from Alfa here in the US was about 230 flywheel horsepower. Putting one of those into a Spider is a nightmare, and yes, those engines are rare here. The supercharged 2.0 is in my opinion a better option. Less weight and a lot of power.

That poor power steering pump 😂. What's the drive ratio ? That it makes such noise even at idle makes me question if it has a bypass feature for low load conditions. See how Eaton and other blower mfg package one into the blower case.

It has a bypass. That has nothing to do with the noise level. As I said, I might quiet it down a bit.

Also the bypass in an Eaton can essentially shut off the supercharger because it doesn't compress internally. This one on the Alfa is like the Supercharger on a Challenger Hellcat, it's a screw type.
