I once was trying to flash a board for a friend for like an hour. Thought it was the usb drive’s format or that I renamed the file wrong. I started panicking. All of a sudden I saw the wifi antenna ports on the IO….realised I was trying to flash the non-wifi BIOS.🤦‍♂️ 10 minutes later were in windows, latest bios and a ryzen 5000 up and running.

Updating a bios scares me to fire everytime I do it. Mainly worried about a power surge or outage. I have never bricked a board yet doing it. On my last couple of builds they have the bios flash back feature which makes things a whole lot easier. Great call Greg and what an upstanding person for admitting a simple oversight.

Sad that many of these early x570 boards didn't have flashback. Many a board have been dumped as a result. This feature needs to be on boards no matter how "cheap."

It's not a upgraded feature for the PC novice. Manufacturers/retailers do not want to be dealing with bricked board returns and high tech support call volumes. This feature is useless for the vast majority of PC users because they do not mess around with the bios for the most part and most are illiterate when it comes down to this.

@@spankbuda7466 I mean most users won't be overclocking their RAM/CPU, setting PCIe bifrucation, or so on besides enabling XMP, but when say someone wants to upgrade their CPU and need a BIOS update, this feature would be extremely helpful. On top of the fact that not even bios flashback, just a second chip, likely doesn't cost more than 50 cents in bulk considering how small they are.

My mistake, I was typing and accidentally cleared out "not". But also, when you state that some boards doesn't work with certain CPU's that falls on the end user for not reading the packaging or contacting the manufacturer tech support because of their ignorance. This is when prebuilds are important. Some people shouldn't be building anything without researching and studying first.

@@spankbuda7466 clears that up lol. I picked this motherboard for my first 3950X Build. This board still gives me NIGHTMARES. Can't count how many times I had to pop out the battery. Very picky when it comes to RAM period. Even on the latest bios, enabling XMP will give you a black screen. I passed this X570 TUF Gaming Plus Wi-Fi to my younger brother, told him don't mess with anything in the bios, and got me the ROG X570-E Wifi, that does actually boot into Safe Mode due to overclocking errors. You may want to buy some specific accessories here: 1) a PC debug card and 2) a universal EEPROM programmer with programming clips. The first is really just a Dr. Debug LED set on a card, which can give you POST codes on literally any motherboard as long as i have the correct PCI, PCIe, LPC or Debug UART connector. And the latter allows you to rescue any screwed up BIOS flashes and force flashing any BIOS bypassing all security checks.

Couple things: First, I would never go straight for a "Beta" version of ANYTHING when attempting to troubleshoot something with an updated version of something. Start with the latest STABLE version and THEN and only then, test the beta version. Especially with a BIOS, once you update to that beta version, you may no longer be able to downgrade the BIOS back to the latest stable version if you run into bugs that are being caused by the beta build. Second, the BIOSrenamer tool has nothing to do with whether or not the BIOS can be read by the board and flashed via normal means (through the BIOS flash utility within the BIOS). The BIOSrenamer tool is specifically for renaming the BIOS file for BIOS *Flashback* functionality (if the board has it).

This is why always getting a board with the flashback feature is a must. In some cases I'm sure not even that will help. Just knowing that you don't have to boot the bios to update them is a good piece of mind. I don't mind paying for the flashback button and clear cmos button on the motherboard. Usually update the bios before the cpu and memory even arrive. So yes I recommend people to not overlook the bios & clear cmos buttons on mobo's. These buttons can really help you out.

G'day Greg, Great video showing the BIOS Update, too many people in comments make out it is So Scarrrrry & not something you can do but really it is as easy as installing any program. My Grandfather taught me that no matter how old you are or how much you think you know there is always something new to learn because "Nobody Knows Everything" Plus never be too proud to admit if you missed something or made a mistake because we all do as "Nobody is Prefekt"

Hello. Nice video. It's OK simple things get overlooked. I myself have a written checklist for when I do repair - so I don't overlook or skip the simple steps that might result in the fix / repair. Thanks for doing these very good and helpful videos.

I just had this exact same issue when upgradeing my ram from 16 GB to 32 GB and i was really confused but I later realised that it was a pretty good time since i last updated the bios.

Proof in the saying "you never stop learning". I've been working on computers since the 1990s, and trust me, there is always something that will come in that is something you have never seen before...

Greg, you're OK for showing us the complexities instead of just editing the mistakes out. We all learn much from mistakes, and it's better to have someone admit to mistakes so you can yourself avoid them! I enjoy your program and thank you for honesty. BTW, your gross dirty computers videos are how I found you a couple of years ago. I've become a dust-freak and built a 'near-HEPA' filter to blow onto my computer to make it nearly dust free. And I have four air purifiers in the house.

for future refence use biosrenamer for flashback tool! this is a feature that allows you to flash the bios without cpu and memory, all you need is power to the board and that is it. plug usb in the back of board usually named bios, press the bios button and keep it held there for 5 second give or take then release button and wait till it's done which you will know by no more flashing. other than that you can use the normal (not renamed) bios to flash in the normal bios.

That is why I like to see how hardware software react when something just ain't quite right, knowing what is software problems causing hardware conflicts and what is hardware causing software conflicts is my thing when it comes to computers. My teacher in high school broke a school computer, and we as a class seperated in like 5 groups had to tell him what was wrong with it each group had time to mess with the computer in question, this was back in IDE days, and manually turning on a computer. The software problem gave a weird issue, unable to read boot disk inconsitantly and also gave unable to write to boot disk inconsitantly, most of the people thought it was a bad hard drive but I and my group decided it wasn't a bad hard drive because though mechanical drives make weird noises when they die and there was non of them. So I know what it was and my group agreed, the problem that was causing that problem was a bad IDE cable, my teacher took a knife to the cable and cut two of the wires and that is why we were getting though software errors, but that was a long time ago.

Thank you for the video, it's very cool to share your knowledge on this because it is very difficult to get help. When it come to computers we remplace the faulty part and voilà but it's not always possible or even interesting to invest again and again on older gens. I'm in that case. I have a motherboard that refuses to turn on when I shortcut the power button. The red light stays on and that's it. The board was functioning I installed win11 by bypassing all the prep requisites (it's a z97 board) I used the pc for a couple of days turning it on and off, then I let it on. When I came back it was apparently on sleep but it refused to wake up when hitting the keyboard or wathever. I turned it off with the shortcut but since then it refuses to turn on again. Actually it did turn on a few times but there was always a issue like vram. The last time it turned on correctly but I had incorrectly plugged the graphic card (arggh) . There was a message on the screen saying power wasn't correctly supplied to the gpu. I turned everything off and correctly plugged the 6 pin vga power. The problem is the motherboard refuses to turn on since then. Everytime I was able to turn it back again I had it unplugged for hours before retrying but this time nothing seems to work. Do you have idea? Any help would be appreciated :)

I know this is a dated video but I wanted to add that a lot of motherboards warn you to disable the TPM before flashing. It's real easy to miss completely disabling the TPM as it can be partially on the motherboard but also on the CPU. A bios update without disabling the TPM can act just fine but later on, there can be funny little glitches that pop up randomly and it's all because the bios is corrupted.

This needs to be shared. I've been praying to god that my motherboard isn't broken for almost a year now since it had the same problem and what I always do is just reseat the RAM to different slots and the damn DRAM led light is on so I ended up just putting my pc to sleep and not shut it down for months now since I was so scared that it won't post if I shut it down.

For those boards, everytime the BIOS is reset , it will go to a memory training cycle and adjust the timings correctly, could be just that
@azntactical4884
@azntactical4884 2 жыл бұрын
I think that is for most boards. With the motherboards I have, the BIOS gives an option to turn the learning off or on. When it relearns, it will cycle a few times before the actual boot.

This is why when I was in my IT course I became a fan of making a checklist and modifying it over time so I don't have a brainfart and forget a step because I am human. Got the idea as one of my instructors used a PDA that he put a database of problems and solutions that he could search when he got stumped.

I remember many decades ago some motherboards had small fans on the chipset. When those fans on the chipset went bad for one reason or another finding a replacement fan was hard. At which point seeing fans on motherboard chipset faded away for some time. Until someone decided it was good idea to bring back the fan on the motherboard chipset. Who ever thought of it I want to slap them side of the head. I learned my leason many decades ago. If you are building yourself a gaming rig do your best to avoid motherboard which chipset fans. Cause at some point those fans will fail or sound like complete crap and finding a replacement tends to be hard.

What was your logic for choosing the beta bios (4403) over the most recent update (4204)? Just wondering.

that is odd I never had a newer motherboard do that to me. It's called Bios Bit rot. But I only came across that on very old motherboards. That one is way too new. Very odd. Cause Bit Rot happens many years later.
