I'm glad it worked out this way. I'm currently working on my cable management and waiting for a fan hub before I tackle connecting everything and if my system doesn't post I'll know what to look for thanks to this series. I also noticed a bent capacitor (one of the plastic ones at the lower left hand corner. My board is almost like the one in this video) that I bent back in place but it was after I finally got my mobo seated and screwed in. I was told that shouldn't matter in the end unless it came loose in which case I'd either have to RMA (have a month to do so) or solder. Fingers crossed I have no issues come Monday or Tuesday.

On my very first build the video I was following for a step by step (I won't call them out) did not mention they were using an intel CPU. I had a Ryzen one. When my cover didn't automatically lift off the board when I lifted the retention clip, I went to go lift it manually. Ryzen does not have a CPU socket cover I found out. Luckily I was one of the few that Newegg allowed a return on without much issue.

I can tell you that they can. I was trying to fix a dozen of bent pins on the LGA1150. Three of them was bent so much, that they fall off while I was trying to unbend them. I think someone dropped a CPU onto them (and that's not the worst part) and then tried to fix it with his nails (that damaged it more). Now the only solution is to change the whole socket. But without proper tools it's impossible. And the board, while it's very nice (a SaberTooth z87) isn't worth the investment.

I recently fixed a Z97 with severely bent pins and it had the same symptoms as this if some pins weren't making contact. Occasionally some would, then I'd randomly get RAM beep codes. In the end, I finally got it. But you wouldn't believe how perfectly aligned the pins need to be sometimes. On LGA 1151 I've had a perfect socket where RAM wouldn't work just because one pin was slightly off (barely visible to the naked eye) before too. You did a great job fixing these pins and not giving up.

Outstanding fix on this one!! I have only a single time fixed a bent pin (and only a single pin) and had it work. Hats off for your effort... Had I saw that nearly a dozen pins were damaged, I would have simply hit the Amazon or Newegg site and got a new motherboard full stop. When you said it was a cooler off of a lower generation cpu, I wondered how that was even possible, with the different size cpu chip and all... So.... you showed me. It will physically bolt on, but covers only about 75% of the chip. Good call with changing that out.

Fantastic job. First of all I am a HUGE FERRARI fan, so seeing you in that shirt after a magnificent pole by Charles Le Clerc in Bahrain, is AWESOME! Secondly, as an industrial PCB designer myself (you might see some of my designs on VESTA wind turbine generators), I cannot understand why stock coolers get such a bad rep. OK, perhaps this is a smaller model for a less powerful CPU, but when we design fans, we make sure that the power rating is correct for the particular unit. Matching aluminium heatsink and correct fan type. Our designs work at 40Amperes... that is very high indeed. In reality, 100 degrees is nothing, These babies are designed in temperatures nearing Mount Doom. We 'soak' them in at 120-150 C, then reflow at 245-300 C... Whatever, love your channel, your style and presentation are top notch!

The stock Intel cooler from socket 1200 and earlier has a different height than it needs to have for socket 1700. Only use socket 1700 compatible coolers and mounting kits. It looks like the cooler crushed the CPU in the socket, and bent the pins in the process.

Common beginner mistake bending pins. I did it once a long time ago and luckily salvaged it like you did here. I learned my lesson. Slow down and take care. The cpu should just float into the socket with no pressure and sit fully flush and squarepn it's own. I always double check it. The worst thing I ever did was try to force a cpu air cooler socket retaining clip into place using a screwdriver. I slipped and damaged some tracks on a brand new motherboard. It was toast. Greg, you asked what we would've done 1st. Well after pulling the video card I would've physically checked each connector & Intel CPU cooler push locks. I've seen to many of those tabs either in unlock or not fully seated to skip them. Now the question of if I would've pulled the cooler & CPU to check the pins...yes. If anything I would've wanted to see the thermal compound (if any is present too) & since it wasn't fixed yet I would've pulled the CPU & found the bent pins. IF those pins weren't bent I would've used a Graphite thermal pad to continue & than repasted the thermal paste after whatever the problem was was fixed. Good job of the pins!!!

Probably by chance your t-shirt is appropriate since LeClerc just qualified as no. 1 in Bahrain's F1 race (first of the season). For info your american team Haas Racing with Kevin Magnussen back qualified no 7. Ohhh and great video :)

Great job on straightening those pins. Not an easy task, and you certainly need a steady hand. I was thinking that a screwdriver-like tool with a thin head and a hole drilled in the middle would make that job go quicker.
