DEEPWATER TROLLING REEF FISH with Swimbait Lures in 100 plus mtrs of water

Have you ever tried trolling up reef fish on lures in 50 to 120 mtrs (300 to 400 feet) of water before? Me either but in this episode that's exactly what I do and it worked a treat. Fishing off Moreton Island & Stradbroke Island using swimbait style lures behind a downrigger, I catch a range of fish species including Snapper, pearl perch and bar cod. Enjoy.

Great Vid, although all of my down rigging experience has been limited to 150ft max depth I would suggest you put a rod holder aft of your down rigger. This helps enormously by negating tangles with the line attached to the bomb. I dont know what strength the line on the reel is but generally wire is thinner than braid once you get over 70kg breaking strain. If you can afford it, change to a purpose built powered down rigger. The thin wire should then allow your bomb to travel more directly under the boat making it visible on the sounder. Any way kudos for using the electric reel to prove that the method works. Cheers.

Thanks mate but there's a reason it was run the way it was. The rod holder at the back of the boat is too far away to control both rods at once when letting the line out and reacting fast when over reefs, hooking up etc. I also needed to run the downrigger in that swivel rod holder as well. The new boat has the swivel rod holder and back rod holder much closer together so I can still control them both at the same time. I'm using 120lb line on the rigger and with fishing in such deep water it's a far better option than wire. Thanks

Awesome video bud. Try and look for a pancake down rigger bomb. Their skinny with a metal tail fin. I find it works a lot better in deeper water and current. Use them in 20-30m with a diver to get snapper off the reefs..

Put your rod in a holder further back from the down rigger. Not in front.

Hi Greg I just watched your video and suggest that you put your rod behind the downrigger ( towards the stern ) ,that way the line clears the rigger and gives you freedom to fight the fish with less tangles. Also ,what is the boat you are using and are you doing a show on what it is and how it's set up ????? TJ

How far off the bottom are you wanting your lure? I saw you said you were 10-30m further than bottom depth.

mate I'm trying to run the lure around 3 to 5mtrs above the bottom. Very difficult to tell but.
