In this video, I walk you through all the components you will need to install a fully pumped water system in your self-built camper van. I walk you through each part of the build and explain what each part does.
If you want to watch my other really useful water services video you can see that here • Domestic Water Service...
Please do subscribe to the channel if you find it useful, it doesn't cost you anything and really helps to allow me to continue putting out free content.
If you would like to make a small donation to say thanks you can do so here www.paypal.me/...
Many thanks for watching and best wishes with your own van build.
Cheers

Hi. Greg. 29th September 2020: I am just starting my Van Conversion: Mercedes Sprinter LWB High Roof: I or I should say we (Wife & I) the team have been watching your videos along with many, many other videos on doing the conversions. I must start by saying that your videos surpass ALL others. Well Done. WATER SYSTEM: It is my intention to follow your advice and install my main water tank inside the van, fortunately my background is Fabrication / Welder so making a bespoke stainless steel tank that fits over the wheel arch and acts as a bed support too. Any other thoughts on the water system you have thought about since doing your van and you would do differently please let me know, much appreciated. When planning your vans in what order or sequence would you do them, I personally are starting from the roof downwards, or is this the wrong approach. PS. I am thinking of selling these bespoke tanks: 2mm thk & the water volume is Approx: 112 Litres, the beauty of building my own tank I can install on the inside of the tank Calming Baffles that will stop the water from sloshing about when driving. Again thanks for showing us ALL the ways to convert these vans. Regards Steve B

Greg, I use 3 X 100 liter bladder tanks in my boat. They are light, easy to swap in case they get damaged (which they don’t), no need for vents as they shrink as water is pulled, easy to disconnect remove and rinse out in case they accumulate dirt, no need for brackets to secure them in place, make up extra space when they’re empty, can check at a glance how full or empty they are, cheap to buy, I’m super happy after 7 years in a salty environment nothing has gone wrong yet. I’m sure you know, just wanted to practice my memory!

I really appreciated the first bit of information about how diaphragm pumps can pull water up! One thing to note is that the expansion tank is to even out water flow, not to prevent lines from bursting! Water does not expand and contract with heat, (until you get to boiling or freezing).

I've had two whale pumps. I used them to pump from a 25 L container into my tank as the filler was about 5' off the ground. They seem, or at least the ones I had, to have a relatively short life span. I hope yours last longer. You can also use the tank drain system to hook up to a pressure washer to _gently_ hose down your van. The other thing was that I needed a sacrificial anode in my gas hot water boiler which needed replacing every few years. It was checked once a year.

Great video, very informative, I need to fit a system like this in my camper at some point, maybe this year, maybe next. I've been collecting the parts I want but couldn't settle on which pipe to use, after watching you with the JG push fit and how much you like it then I'm pretty much sold on it now, it just seems a bit too easy after working with copper and solder for so long, I'm a bit old school and set in my ways so it takes a while to settle on something and feel its right. Cheers

@@GregVirgoe Like you said, make a clean cut otherwise you'll nick the o'ring. Maybe even chamfer the ends. The clever thing about o'rings is that the surface area around the o'ring is larger then the area where the water is trying to get through. So the higher the water pressure, the tighter it seals. As opposed to a flat gasket type seal that pushes apart with pressure and eventually leaks.

I work as a plumber and an Expansion vessel is only used in a closed system such as a heatingsystem with radiators to handle expansion as you say. What you have installed is an acumulatortank and the main reason for it is to build up pressure so that the pump wont have to go on and off all the time - it is there to save the pump. I would like to see the electrics and where you fitted switches and so on for this. Thanks for the videos!
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 3 жыл бұрын
Let me correct you. This is a closed system. There is nowhere for the water to go when it’s expands or contracts and is under pressure. A slight increase in pressure can have a dramatic effect on pressure in this closed system. The rubber bladder and air pocket in the vessel with allow for this expansion. Hope that helps you further your knowledge 👍🏼😃

@@GregVirgoe I know, in our van I used those dreadful jubileeclips wich caused a lot of rust around the wheelarches. Last year I had to tackle the most of it because the Dutch MOT disapproved it. After some new pieces were welded in and I stopped the rust with acid and zinck and bituminous spray we got our approval. Luckily we own a Iveco with a ladder chassis because any other chassis would be written off. So next time I'll be very, very sure to order the John Guest stuff😄

Hi Greg. Another advantage of the pressure vessel (depending on size / volume) is that the pump cycles less as the compressed air pushing on the internal bladder keeps constant pressure on your water supply. Neat.
@JayDee-xj9lu
@JayDee-xj9lu 2 жыл бұрын
But I was wondering that if you pressurise it to 30 psi and the pump is 30 psi then the bladder won't compress at all? Mine hasn't got a Schrader valve to pressurise it.
@JayDee-xj9lu
@JayDee-xj9lu 2 жыл бұрын
Terrific information. I was wondering why I was getting hot water from the cold tap for a couple of minutes. The pump check valve was leaking and allowing the hot into the cold pipes. Also I didn't realize the hot water drain valve was also a pressure relief valve. Thank a lot.

Glad it helped. Water will take the least line of resistance to get out and that may be backward through the heater in some cases. Thanks for leaving a nice comment.

Great informative video, as usual! If I may suggest, I am building my own caravan and my water tank is located inside. I am pumping from the top of the tank, via a pick up tube and I didn't install a drain valve, at 2.7 gpm, my tank can be emptied within 4 minutes. If there is a leak anywhere in the system, only the content of the lines will be spread inside the caravan, not the whole content of the tank. I do have an inspection port on the top of the tank for cleaning purpose. I used to be a sailor and this idea comes from the installation of inboard diesel fuel tanks into sailboats. From Canada
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
charlevoix418 in theory it sounds like a good plan. I wonder if you had a leak lower than your tank if it would still syphon out the contents? 🧐🤔
@charlevoix418
@charlevoix418 4 жыл бұрын
@@GregVirgoe Quite frankly, I can't be 100% sure about that, but one thing I am 100%sure, is if you pick the water from the bottom of the tank, it will happen, because of the pressure produced by the height of the water inside.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
charlevoix418 not in this installation because my tank is the lowest part of the system so water will not drain out if the leak is in the van it would be above the tank. No problem 😉
