How do you keep the koi alive in winter? The water isn't that deep... won't it freeze over in extreme cold?

2 - 21/2 ft deep is really all it takes to successfully overwinter koi here (zones 5 or 6). That along with keeping a hole open in any ice cover for gas exchange by using a small floating heater and/or continual pump use or aeration, and they're good to go. And there's 30 years and thousands of ponds worth of demonstrable proof...but deeper is OK too!
