Happy Christmas! I have such fond childhood memories of this film - Dad rented it from the video shop (as you did back in the 80s), and I could only have been about six at the time, but I loved it and wasn’t especially scared. Despite the horror bits, there is a cartoonish element to it that really appeals to kids, and both the mogwais and the gremlins are realised triumphantly. The Christmas setting in an idyllic small town was quite deliberate, as director Joe Dante wanted to subvert more traditional festive films like It’s a Wonderful Life. Glad you like it so much - you’ll have to watch Gremlins 2 now, which is also a lot of fun.

UK certificate was a 15 on release and my Blu Ray copy still is.12 certificate didn’t come out until 1989 and Batman was the first.People were expecting an ET2 as Steven Spielberg was involved but he only Executive Produced it so wasn’t in charge in any great deal, same as Back To The Future so were shocked at the increased horror content.

I don't know if you noticed that the town square was the same outside studio set as they used in 'Back to the Future'. Steven Spielberg was the executive producer of this rather than the director. Before Joe Dante directed it but Spielberg considered Tim Burton. I first saw this when I was about 10 and we had to the record the end as it was a school night. I've loved it ever since. I've never heard anyone say they don't enjoy it.

Delighted that you watched Gremlins for Christmas! It certainly wasn't meant as children's entertainment, but I did watch this as a kid back in the 80's and I loved it. I probably wore out my VHS copy with repeated viewings! It's always been a favourite of mine in the very tiny genre of Christmas monster movies! So... I guess that means you'll have to give Gremlins 2 a try. (It's not a Christmas film)

This movie was one of two responsible for creation of the PG-13 rating. The other was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Both were controversial for essentially being kids films with graphic elements Technically you could say Gizmo is a gremlin. It’d be like saying caterpillars are butterflies ET indeed came out already. There’s even easter eggs to it. The gremlin that cuts the phone lines says “phone home caca”, there’s a toy of ET in the store, and the theater marquee has the working title A Boy’s Life The mogway and gremlins were achieved with puppetry and animatronics. That one shot of the gremlins coming out of the dark was srop motion Idk if you’ve watched Breaking Bad, but one of the cops is played by Johnathan Banks, who played the significant character Mike Gremlins are from real life folklore, invented in the beginning of the 20th century to explain malfunctions in aircraft and other machinery, especially in WWII. This movie’s interpretation basically became the mainstream one. I hope you check out the sequel, which leans a lot more into the comedy

Ah! A Christmas movie that actually references Christmas. Back when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, there used to be three movies that pretty much got shown every year at some point over the Christmas holidays. Quite why they were shown, I don't know, because none of them referenced Christmas. In some quarters, it became a kind of tradition, in others a running joke. They stopped doing it quite a while ago. The three movies were "The Great Escape", "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music."

Yep Marie-Claire Gremlins is a Christmas movie. It was very well receivedwhen released and there is a urban myth that the studio didn't like Kates speech about how he dad died on Xmas eve and wanted it taken out which isn't true although Spielberg want keen on it.

My fave christmas/horror movie!! You have to watch gremlins 2 aswel, its from 1990, same director and lead actors but its set in a new york skyscraper. Its more like a cartoonish spoof compared to the first movie. Its bonkers and focuses more on the comedy rather than horror like the first movie

An unusual mix of horror and comedy.

You should watch Gremlins 2 - for a sequel it's very good. Don't think it's set at Christmas though.

I love this movie, fun fact it was inspired by a classic episode of Star Trek- spoilers

Yeah, there was confusion on whether this was suitable for kids so they decided to go more kid friendly with the second film. You need to watch it, I actually prefer it to the first.

Not really.Joe Dante, the director, didn’t really want to make a sequel unless the studio let him do exactly what he wanted. They agreed and he went a totally different direction with it.

Gremlins 2 is just as good although it has it's detractors for it being too satirical and comedic.
