Fun fact: The old man who keeps Gizmo is played by Keye Luke, one of the first Chinese-Americans to make it huge in the Entertainment Industry. He starred in a lot of film and television roles, he helped found the Screen Actor's Guild, and he painted the murals in Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Pretty impressive resume, if you ask me.

Chris Columbus is like the king of Christmas Holiday movies. Gremlins, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Christmas With The Kranks, and The Christmas Chronicles 2 were all helmed by the director. Not to mention Harry Potter is sort of an honorary Christmas movie.
@joneljustbecause10 ай бұрын
While Chris Columbus wrote this film, it’s really Joe Dante’s direction that makes this movie what it is. You can tell once you see other Joe Dante directed films such as The Burbs, The Howling, Small Soldiers and of course The New Batch. However, Chris Columbus did direct my other favorite Christmas movie, Home Alone. I have to watch both films every year around Christmas or it simply feels like something’s wrong. Also, Die Hard! I don't know if anyone already pointed this out: "gremlins" are a WWII legend, as the veteran in the movie said. They were said to be unknown creatures that were cause the fall of many planes, they were jokingly accused when unexpected accidents or engine failures happened. (Remember that at that time, engine planes were much less reliable than nowadays. Cheers to the courage of these pilots and crew members). There's also a famous Looney Tunes cartoon of the 40's where Bugs Bunny is desperately trying to repair a plane he's flying in while the gremlins are tearing it appart - they already have more or less this same appearance, except more cartoony obviously.

We had a smokeless ashtray at an old job I used to work at. There were many times where one person was the only employee in the store and the manager smoked. So we had this ashtray in the back room, where you could still see the store, but the ash tray had a fan that would suck all the smoke in from any cigarette that was laying on it and pump out clean air. When you blew out smoke, you blew it towards the ashtray. It wasn’t perfect, but it got a good amount of the smoke. This was during the early 90s though, so smoking indoors wasn’t banned yet.

It's clever how the failed inventor Dad is a metaphor for the entire story,.. i.e. He gives his son a 'Gizmo' for Christmas and it's dysfunctional just like all of his inventions/gizmos lying around the house. There's commentary about holiday consumerism, too. Obviously I didn't notice any of this as a kid, but it's made me appreciate the movie a little bit more as an adult.

@grunions964810 ай бұрын
I'm sure someone else has already said this, but 'gremlins' did exist as a word for general machinery failure prior to this movie - although I don't think many people thought they were actual physical beings. In my opinion Dick Miller's character isn't referencing the creatures in the film when he refers to gremlins early on - he is drunkenly recounting his superstitions from the war in a way that coincides exactly with the creatures in the movie, which pays off perfectly when he encounters them and they become the embodiment of that superstition. It surely is then a post-modern revision of The Seven Pillars of Mythology - all archetypes ultimately coalescing around the central concept of self. Gizmo also drives a small car. Ultimately, it's a film about loss, the unknowable, and the gremlins inside us all.

Low key classic. BTW, the voice of Gizmo is Howie Mandel. There was lots of talk...and I believe it was in pre-production at one point...of a prequel recounting the experience of Dick Miller's character dealing with Gremlins on a plane during WWII. You MUST watch Gremlins 2, IMMEDIATELY. It purposely references the first film in very cheeky ways. It's a VERY self-aware film.
